BOOM! Studios has announced a new series for all of us who stayed up late at night reading theories about who really killed John F. Kennedy. Regarding the Matter of Oswald’s Body is “an off-kilter crime thriller” that will explore the conspiracy theory around whatever happened to the body of presidential assassin Lee Harvey Oswald following his killing by Jack Ruby. The series, which debuts in November, is written by Christopher Cantwell, illustrated by Luca Casalanguida, colored by Giada Marchisio, and lettered by AndWorld Design.
Here’s how BOOM! describes Regarding the Matter of Oswald’s Body:
The Kennedy assassination is a rat’s nest of conspiracy theories: mafia involvement, the second gunman, government cover-up… but the most important chapter of this sordid tale may just be the theory that the body buried at Oswald’s Rose Hill gravesite is not actually Lee Harvey himself.
Meet the ragtag group of “useful idiots” – a wannabe cowboy from Wisconsin, a Buddy Holly-idolizing (former) car thief, a world-weary Civil Rights activist ready for revolution, and a failed G-Man who still acts the part – who are unwittingly brought together to clean up the crime of the century, and specifically deal with the matter of Oswald’s body.
Regarding the Matter of Oswald’s Body is the first BOOM! Studios work for both Cantwell and Casalanguida, and the writer and artist’s first collaboration. Along with work for Marvel on titles like Doctor Doom and the current Iron Man ongoing series, Cantwell’s previous creator-owned comics work includes She Could Fly and Everything from Dark Horse’s Berger Books imprint, and The Blue Flame from Vault Comics. Casalanguida has illustrated multiple James Bond titles for Dynamite, as well as Scout’s Honor at AfterShock and Lost Soldiers at Image.
In a statement announcing the series Cantwell and Casalanguida explained what drew them both to the story:
“As a Dallas native and born obsessive, the Kennedy assassination and its infinite mysteries have often occupied my stray thoughts,” said Cantwell. “REGARDING THE MATTER OF OSWALD’S BODY is both an oddball love letter and an offbeat elegy to the strangest, most wistful, and ultimately tragic elements of the state of Texas, with a cast of characters you’ll love, love to hate, and be sometimes hilariously confounded by.”
“It’s been a fun experience diving right into the middle of this story! REGARDING THE MATTER OF OSWALD’S BODY is a compelling and exciting thriller that managed to pull me in completely as I was illustrating it, and I hope you’ll feel the same way when you finally get a chance to read it!” said Casalanguida.
Check out a preview of the first issue, as well as a variant cover for the issue by Ryan Sook, below. Regarding the Matter of Oswald’s Body #1 is set to arrive in stores in November (though not specified, I’d guess Wednesday, November 24th, the anniversary of Oswald’s assassination).
