BOOM! Studios and Netflix sign a first look TV deal

The deal includes live-action and animated series.

BOOM! Studios announced on Monday that its signed a first look TV deal with Netflix, outlining a two-year agreement that opens the publisher’s comics and graphic novels up to animated and live-action adaptation by the streamer.

The publisher, currently operating as best it can to support retailers, is known for series including Lumberjanes, Something is Killing the Children, Once & Future and Mouse Guard. There’s no word as of yet which BOOM! properties Netflix is eyeing first – although the idea of a Lumberjanes animated series is pretty exciting and Noelle Stevenson has plenty of experience working with the ‘Flix (just saying!).

Whenever those properties are decided upon, BOOM! Studios CEO and founder Ross Richie and president of development Stephen Christy will executive produce all shows developed through the pact.

Prior to this agreement, Netflix and BOOM! were already adapting The Unsound by Cullen Bunn and Jack T. Cole for a feature adaptation and in the past they also collaborated on 2019’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

Outside of its Netflix partnership, BOOM! Studios is also currently working with just about every other big name in entertainment, including Amazon, HBO Max, Peacock, CBS All Access and Disney+.

Check out Ross Richie’s statement below (and cross your fingers for Lumberjanes).

“We generate 20+ new original series a year and are thrilled to partner with a streamer that is as prolific as we are,” company CEO and Founder Ross Richie said. “BOOM!’s unique partnership model benefits creators by positioning them to be packaged with high-end directors, screenwriters, and producers. We’re thrilled to continue our track record of translating our best-selling award-winning library with the best TV talent in the business but now with the undisputed leader of the new streaming era.”
