Despite multiple delays, the much-anticipated Black Adam, the latest big screen entry from Warner Bros. and DC Comics starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the anti-hero, is scheduled to hit theaters this October. Today Warner Bros. released the first Black Adam trailer.

Set to a remix of remix of Kanye and JAY-Z’s “Murder to Excellence,” the trailer finds Black Adam freed from his tomb after nearly 5,000 years, ready to deliver his unique brand of justice on the modern world – a brand that includes killing criminals. Naturally, that puts him in conflict with the Justice Society including Dr. Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Atom-Smasher (Noah Centineo), Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), and Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell).

The Black Adam trailer also features Sarah Shahi as Adrianna Tomaz, better known as the super-heroine Isis, introduced in The Shazam!/Isis Hour live-action show and later incorporated into the comics. We’ll have to wait and see whether or not the character ends up with powers by the end of the film.

As comic fans are well aware, before Billy Batson became the champion of Shazam, Adam was the Wizard’s original chosen hero in ancient Egypt before being corrupted by his awesome godlike powers. Whereas Billy Batson’s powers are derived from the ancient Greek gods and heroes, Adam’s come from ancient Egyptian gods which include – the stamina of Shu, the swiftness of Horus, the strength of Amon, the wisdom of Zehuti, the power of Aten, and the courage of Mehen.

Johnson has made it no secret that this has been a major passion project for him for years and it’s a role that he was born to play. Unsurprisingly, on the publishing side DC Comics is prepping fans and audiences with prelude one-shots that tie-in to the upcoming film, as well as a new Black Adam series from writer Christopher Priest and artist Rafa Sandoval out this month.

Black Adam is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who previously worked with Johnson on last summer’s Jungle Cruise, and from a screenplay by Adam Sztykiel and Rory Haines & Sohrab Noshirvani.

Check out a few more screengrabs from the new trailer below. Black Adam is set to arrive in theaters on October 21, 2022.
