As previously reported in May, the initial staff and cast has also been confirmed for the new film, with Junpei Mizusaki and Shinji Takagi both handling director duties, the screenplay being written by Kazuki Nakashima, character designs being created by Takashi Okazaki of Afro Samurai fame, music production by Yugo Kanno and Kamikaze Douga will handle animation production.

The first Batman Ninja film was primarily a direct to video production produced and released in 2018 as a collaboration between DCWarner Bros. Japan and Kamikaze Douga that was also released in Japanese theaters. The sequel also marks the return of the staff and a main cast member from the first film, with Japanese voice actor Koichi Yamadera returning to voice Batman.

Warner Bros. first released the Batman Ninja anime film via digital distribution in April 2018 before a home video release the next month in May, which included the Japanese audio track as well as the English dub. The anime was then released to Japanese theaters in June 2018 in Japanese. The film was also broadcast on Adult Swim‘s Toonami block in October 2021 as part of a special weekend broadcast event in English.

The first film is described below:

Batman Ninja takes a journey across the ages as Gorilla Grodd’s time displacement machine transports many of Batman’s worst enemies to feudal Japan – along with the Dark Knight and a few of his allies. The villains take over the forms of the feudal lords that rule the divided land, with the Joker taking the lead among the warring factions. As his traditional high-tech weaponry is exhausted almost immediately, Batman must rely on his intellect and his allies – including Catwoman and the extended Bat-family – to restore order to the land, and return to present-day Gotham City.
