This week sees the wide release of Anita Kunz‘s Another History of Art, in which the artist reimagines art’s Western canon as if all of the most famous pieces had been created by women. Today The Beat is proud to present an exclusive look at five of the reimagined pieces in Kunz’s book, including the cartoonist’s humorous take on iconic pieces by René Magritte, Leonardo Da Vinci, and more.

Here’s how publisher Fantagraphics describes Another History of Art:

Have you ever awakened from a sleepy delirium one morning and imagined that you lived in a different and glorious world where all the recognized masterpieces in the Western pantheon of art history were painted by women? If not, no problem: The renowned and award-winning painter and illustrator Anita Kunz has imagined it for you in her hilariously inventive and masterfully executed Another History of Art. Kunz depicts the most iconic paintings in the history of art — as if they had been painted by women. Conceived with delicious wit, boundless humor, and an eye for the telling aesthetic detail, Kunz’s recreations are not only stunning paintings in their own right but a sly, revisionist social commentary on the male-dominated history of Western civilization.

Along with Kunz’s beautiful artwork, the preview pages below also show off the individual biographies that Kunz wrote for each of the artists’ female doppelgängers.

Kunz is a highly-decorated artist, whose work has been featured in numerous group and solo exhibitions, as well as on magazine covers including VarietyRolling Stone, and The New Yorker.

Check out the preview of Another History of Art below. The 136-page hardcover is available in stores and online now.
