Marvel has just announced via a Newsarama interview that author James Robinson (Fantastic Four) and artist ACO (Midnighter) are working on a brand new Nick Fury, Jr. ongoing solo series titled simply, Nick Fury edited by Marvel Senior Editor Mark Paniccia editor of Hulk, X-Men and more. If ACO’s past work on Midnighter, one of DC’s most buzzed about books in the DC You era is any indication, readers are in for a run on Nick Fury influenced by legendary comics creator Jim Steranko’s tenure on the character propelling 1968’s Nick Fury: Strange Tales to glory!

Robinson is adding a new Hydra villain, Frankie Nobel to thwart Fury’s peacekeeping of S.H.I.E.L.D.. In the vein of Robinson’s Scarlet Witch ongoing series, the comic will feature one-issue storylines.

In his Newsarama interview, Robinson explained the interesting pitching process that led to him writing the series: Not to be glib, but as I recall, it began with me asking editor Mark Paniccia why no one had done a comic with young Nick Fury.

When asked about the connective tissue gluing each issue together, Robinson said the following: If there is an overarching thing to this series, it’s the idea of Fury just beginning to feel comfortable stepping into the shoes of his father. The other thing we’ll see going from issue to issue is Fury’s game of wits and skills with a new character – Frankie Noble, Agent of Hydra, who is very much the opposite number to Fury in all ways.

Nicholas Fury Jr. was created in 2012 first bearing the name Marcus Johnson until he discovers his birthright and takes on the role as S.H.I.E.L.D. Director. Robinson teased that the original Nick Fury now known as the Unseen may make an appearance later on in the series.
