A Year of Free Comics: Witchling by Renee Nault, a gorgeous hand painted fantasy

by Stephen Harrick

Renee Nault, artist on the upcoming comics adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale, is already well versed in comics with her webcomic, Witchling.

Jane is a nineteen-year old woman who was orphaned and lives in a small town with the King and Queen of the fictional country Andelle. They live on the outskirts of a forest that nobody dares enter. The inhabitants of the forest beckon Jane, and though her nightmares/visions terrify her, she is drawn to the monstrous creatures. Also, Jane talks to cats, and they talk back to her.

Nault’s idyllic work makes this ominous tale even more unsettling. Her hand painted art, paired with the foreboding forest that calls to Jane, creates a scenario akin to the main character’s relationship with the monsters: haunting yet strangely appealing.

Nault’s work will be featured later this year in the upcoming comic book adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. Witchling suggests that Nault brings a magnificent sorrow to her comics work, which makes this, and any future projects from her, worth checking out.

  1. Wow, the art is beautiful ! Reminiscent of Wendy Pini’s painted work on Elfquest, but with a more “Monet Water Lillies” feel to it (if that makes sense ??)
