A Free Comic Book Day Sampler

by Pam Auditore

Free Comic Book Day is not only a great opportunity for families to bond, comic book collectors to get great deals, but a chance to meet the Industry’s celebrated Writers and Artists without paying a Con Fee.  If you’re lucky, you might get a sketch of your favorite character or play games or get other unexpected perks. If you went to  Collector’s Paradise in  Winnetka, CA,  and contributed to the One Fund to aid survivors of the Boston Marathon Bombing, you could have had Philip TanRhasah EkedalAndy Suriano or Rick Basaldua do a sketch for you.  The FCBD crowds were also keeping Writer J. Michael Straczynski  busy signing his and Artist Ben Templesmith‘s new book “Ten Grand.” He was also accommodating whenever someone whipped out one of his “Thor,” “Amazing Spiderman”  or other books.

Some improvisational Cos Players were also on-hand.

Spiderman: If you’re a hero, I’m J. Jonah Jameson.

Deadpool:  (breaking down) I was fighting A.I.M. and psychotic breaks before you, “Sybil” and Dr. Phil.  I deserve a slice of pizza!

At Earth-2 in Northridge, CA ,Tanya Tate, of Comic Book Girl19.com also did request sketches  much to the delight of the small ones and their Dad’s

At  Galaxy of Comics in Van Nuys, CA, Chris “Doc” Wyatt writer ofCreepsville”  and Patrick O’Reilly writer ofSteam Engines of Ozwere signing their respective works and discussing why “Leech” would make a lousy roommate with Comics Industry legend writer Len Wein and his friend Bob.

(Left to Right) Bob, Chris “Doc” Wyatt, Patrick O’Reilly, Len Wein

Meanwhile, Artist/Teacher “Dr. Scott” Fresina was busy teaching to students  how to ink and draw for themselves.

After picking up their FCBD books, a mother and daughter began learning how to play Magic: The Gathering while others went through the $1.00 bins.

 Unexpected perks
