Themaxxdvd ’90s nostalgia alert! All 13 episodes of The Maxx, the ultra quirky cartoon based on Sam Kieth’s mega-quirky comic book, will be out next year on DVD-R. The disc includes interviews with Kieth and director Gregg Vanzo as well as audio commentary.

It’s not quite a done deal though — no release date is given and the Amazon listing mysteriously says “This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media.’s standard return policy will apply.

Hopefully this gem will be released and we will remember a time when MTV was not just the network of boob jobs and faux-lebrities.

  1. Yesssss! I’ve been waiting FOREVER for this. And I assume by “complete” that it restores the episode cut out of the VHS version? I’ll definitely be plunking down cash for this.

  2. Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible DVD’s were also made this way. It’s just so that they only make what is needed rather than keeping the title in stock. The Dr. Horrible DVD-R was high quality and you really couldn’t tell easily that it was a DVD-R.

  3. Will it contain the music (e.g., “I Want to Marry a Lighthouse Keeper”) from the original televised series or the replacement music on the VHS release???

  4. About freakin’ time!

It’d be great if a collection of The Head were to come out alongside it.

Heidi – did you get my e-mail about the Spectre animated feature that’s coming out?

  5. not even the pirated versions have the actual aired episodes…I wonder if there will be extras as well as the characters owned by other comic creators on this disk? if not, fans of this series are still being screwed.

  6. From the link:
“This disc is expected to play back in DVD Video “play only” devices, and may not play in other DVD devices, including recorders and PC drives.”

It has an Amazon product code, not a UPC or ISBN/EAN.

  7. “Hopefully this gem will be released and we will remember a time when MTV was not just the network of boob jobs and faux-lebrities.”

You mean back when they played music videos and had VJs like Randy of the Redwoods and Downtown Julie Brown ?

  8. Just this past Sunday, I recorded my old VHS copy onto DVD. I guess I’ll wait and see what the price point is, before I decide if I really need this one, with all the extra’s and stuff. Really weird how I just dug this out, and then this announcement!
