Television revivals of beloved shows are nothing new especially in the last decade. But for every Twin Peaks that gives a satisfying closure for viewers while still innovating there’s also an Arrested Development that fails to capture the original magic. It’s a testament to the collective power of fandom that these beloved shows get a second life thanks in large part to binge-watching enabled by the rise of streaming services. Such is the case with Young Justice which returned earlier this month on the DC Universe streaming platform more than six years after after its untimely cancellation in 2013.
Despite being a critical darling, during its original tenure on Cartoon Network the animated series came up short in regards to toy sales. It’s a tale as old as time in the animation industry. Just look at the Static Shock cartoon which didn’t have a licensed toy line and was only eclipsed by the mighty Pokémon in the ratings.
Based on the enormous positive reaction from social media, producers Greg Weisman and Brandon Vietti and everyone involved swung for the fences and scored another hit. Of course, a favorable response doesn’t necessarily translate into viewership, but looks the investment into bringing Young Justice back from cancellation has indeed paid off considerably for DC’s fledgling streaming platform.
According to streaming service ratings provided from Parrot Analytics provided to Business Insider, Young Justice: Outsiders was the most “in-demand” streaming show for the week based on “demand expressions” data.
Rank | Show | Average Demand Expressions |
1 | Young Justice: Outsiders | 31,546,864 |
2 | Titans | 31,054,303 |
3 | Stranger Things | 30,678,392 |
4 | Black Mirror | 26,118,395 |
5 | The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel | 24,428,099 |
6 | Narcos | 24,031,068 |
7 | Marvel’s Daredevil | 23,038,319 |
It’s tempting to assume that signs are pointing towards Young Justice getting renewed for another season. but to quote a famous refrain—don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched. There could be a myriad of factors involved that determine a 4th Season. Nevertheless, this certainly bodes well in its favor.
The remaining episodes of the first half of the season will arrive this Friday, with the second half of Outsiders currently scheduled to air sometime in the summer around June.
Twin Peaks gave “closure”? … It was a great season, but for every question it answered, it asked about 100 new ones.
