Hot off the press, here are the September solicits for DC’s mainline, assorted imprints, and upcoming collections. While there have been whispers of some potential creative changes on a number of books (the publisher is in the middle of big writers summit right now for that matter) and we’ve started to see a few shifts here and there, September is a little lighter on the big news front just ahead of what is likely to be a series of *BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS* at SDCC, if I was a betting man.

Here are the things that immediately catch my eye:

  • Wonder Woman Earth One volume 2 keeps that irregular prestige line going with what is probably the best creative team of the bunch. Now that they’ve been able to shed the requisite origin story, it’s possible that Morrison, Paquette and Fairbairn will be able to really dig into some cool thematic meat given their very Marston-heavy focus on the character. It’ll be a beautiful book to behold for sure.
  • Tom King and Clay Mann’s Heroes in Crisis kicks off that month as well. King has basically been the hottest writer in the industry for a couple of years now, and with multiple Eisners to his name, and potentially more to come, putting him in charge of an event title like this is a no-brainer. It seems a bit reminiscent of Identity Crisis in its murder-mystery approach, but I’m ever so curious to see how he returns to both Booster Gold and Harley Quinn just after his short work with them in Batman.
  • Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo reunite for the very first new Black Label release in Batman: Damned, which looks to be a horror story surrounding the murder of the Joker, an amnesiac Batman and guest-starring John Constantine. Intriguing pitch.
  • Jinxworld adds another series to its new DC-labled line-up in Cover, which re-teams Brian Michael Bendis and David Mack, a spy story that finds the intelligence community recruiting a comic artist as a spy. Sounds like some fun meta-shenanigans will be on tap. There’s also a relaunch of United States of Murder that month, and a nice little cheap Jinxworld sampler for those wanting to dip their toes in!
  • More Sandman Universe titles debut too! With The Dreaming and House of Whispers both releasing their first issues respectively. I’ve long thought Simon Spurrier has been far too underutilized during his time in the Big Two ranks, so putting him up-front with the incredible Bilquis Evely makes The Dreaming a must read, especially.
  • Matt Wagner jumps aboard Batman #44 as artist for an issue focused on Dick Grayson! Talk about a rare treat!
  • Speaking of Tom King written comics, Mister Miracle comes to an end with its issue 12…and we finally learn, did Scott Free ever really escape from the ultimate trap?
  • Nightwing, now under Ben Percy’s purview, is moving back to a twice-monthly schedule. Looks like another Dick Grayson push is on the way.
  • The Seven Soldiers are guest-starring in Sideways! Originally, these issues were going to be co-written by Grant Morrison, though it’s possible his involvement has been pushed back by a month or so as DiDio’s arcs for the series have taken further shape. More to come next month on that front, surely!
  • There’s a few pieces of note in the collected edition side of things as well, Sean Murphy’s mega-popular Batman: White Knight will be the first “perennial” that will be reprinted under the Black Label banner, it will eventually be joined by titles like All Star Superman, The New Frontier, Batman: Year One, Kingdom Come, and Dark Knight III: The Master Race.
  • Lastly, DC is finally reprinting the classic Captain Marvel story, “The Monster Society of Evil”, which has been in desperate need of re-release in some time. The Beck/Binder original, which debuted Mister Mind, was the longest running serial story in Golden Age comics and a precursor to the multi-part stories that were to come. It will also be one of the only Otto Binder Captain Marvel comics in print as well, but hopefully with the big screen debut of the character on the horizon, this will be the first of many to come!

The full solicits are below:

BATMAN: DAMNED #1

written by BRIAN AZZARELLO

art and cover by LEE BERMEJO

variant cover by JIM LEE

DC BLACK LABEL, the highly anticipated new imprint from DC Comics, starts here!

The Joker is dead.

There is no doubt about that. But whether Batman finally snapped his scrawny neck or some other sinister force in Gotham City did the deed is still a mystery.

Problem is, Batman can’t remember…and the more he digs into this labyrinthian case, the more his mind starts to doubt everything he’s uncovering.

So who better to set him straight than…John Constantine? Problem with that is as much as John loves a good mystery, he loves messing with people’s heads even more. So with John’s “help,” the pair will delve into the sordid underbelly of Gotham as they race toward the mind-blowing truth of who murdered The Joker.

BATMAN: DAMNED is a bimonthly super-natural horror story told by two of comics’ greatest modern creators—a visceral thrill-ride that proudly puts the “black” in BLACK LABEL.

Years in the making, from the award-winning team of Brian Michael Bendis and multimedia sensation David Mack, comes a brand-new graphic novel experience. And it’s all kind of based on a true story. Sort of…

Deep in the American intelligence community, someone realizes that comic book creators, who travel all over the world to sell their wares, might make the perfect cover for operatives in the dangerous, topsy-turvy world of intelligence and counterintelligence…and that’s when all hell breaks loose. This is the story of the time the world of comics and the world of international spywork smashed together—with unexpected results!

Artist David Mack, follows his Emmy nominated work on Jessica Jones, and his critically acclaimed video work for Dashboard Confessionals and Amanda Palmer, brings another completely unique vision to this driving comedic spy story that is also a beautiful Valentine to all those creators who sit alone and make beautiful stories.

DC BOMBSHELLS: HARLEY QUINN SEPIA TONE VARIANT STATUE

based on art by ANT LUCIA

sculpted by TIM MILLER

DC DESIGNER SERIES: NIGHTWING & BATGIRL BY RYAN SOOK STATUE

designed by RYAN SOOK

sculpted by PAUL HARDING

Workplace romance is never easy, and doing it behind a mask while protecting the streets of Gotham City takes the difficulty to new heights. But being able to embrace your beloved while hanging upside down via grapnel-gun cable makes it all worthwhile. This statue is inspired by the art of Ryan Sook and is designed to stand upright or be mounted on a wall so the characters can hang inverted in their embrace. This polyresin statue is limited to 5,000 pieces.

DC DESIGNER SERIES statues are based on art from the comics industry’s top creators and re-create their vision in vivid 3-D detail.

  1. Awesome to have the solicitation text here! Look forward to reading it more fully when I have the time but the Beat just became my one-stop shop.

  2. I wish Matt Wagner would do a new Green Arrow series.

I’d love to see Ollie’s reactions to Amazon taking over the city, the mass gentrification that has pushed out many poor Hispanic and black residents, the out of control homeless crisis, Seattle becoming full of obnoxious tech bros., etc.

It’s time for a sequel to The Long Bow Hunters.

  3. Frankly speaking, I didn’t like the approach of writing so much words. I mean people don’t have time to read that much stuff. But the image you used of the wonder women was great. She looked really stunning.

  4. The Dreaming does sound good (I only just came across Si Spurrier recently). The Mexican vertigo book too, and hopefully I might learn something.

Marc Andreyko on Supergirl is something I’ll look to read. Makes sense, if Bendis is on Supes that former collaborator Andreyko is on Sgirl. I really enjoyed his Manhunter, and I’m always interested when I see it’s Andreyko writing the book.

  5. Nightwing and Titans going twice-monthly while remaining $3.99 an issue is a great reason to drop books I was already on-the-fence about. Thanks, DC!

  6. Wonder Woman’s powers are based on Amazonian “Godesses”. She has super strength, coming close to Superman’s level, can fly, has super speed,(but not as fast as Flash), is invulnerable, and uses magic bracelets which deflects bullets, energies and some magic spells, uses a golden lasso, which, when she ties it around someone, forces that person to tell the truth. She can also use her tiara (the silver one on her head with the star) like a boomerang.
