Comics and graphic novels have charted on bestseller lists and been awarded some of the most prestigious prizes in literature, and yet for many readers, the medium continues to be synonymous with superheroes. But over the past decade, independent publishing has transcended its quiet roots to become a dominant and richly diverse part of the comic book scene. In this panel, five comic book creators who have built their careers outside the “Big Three” discuss the ins and outs of working for smaller publishers and what place non-superhero comics hold in today’s rapidly evolving comic book industry.

Writer and Artist David Petersen is the the creator of the Eisner Award-winning series, “Mouse Guard.” “Mouse Guard” focuses on a colony of intelligent mice, who live in a medieval era, paralleling the same age in human history. Eisner Award-nominated comic book writer Joshua Dysart (Unknown Soldier) will interview David on stage!
