At home in the warmer months, recovering from neck surgery, cartoonist Lauren Weinstein gifts us with Flower Voyeur, a slice of the circle of life comic that ‘s very appropriate as we heda for the dog days of August.

Weinstein’s Carriers, about learning she and her husband might pass cystic fibrosis on to their child, was nominated for a Cartoonist Studio Award and is a powerful story…as is Flower Voyeur.

Weinstein hasn’t been heard from much in recent years, for reasons she explores in her comics—motherhood and responsibilities are not fertile soil for the edgy life of the alternative cartoonist. Given her gorgeous, imaginative work in earlier books Inside Vineyland, Girl Stories and The Goddess of War she’s a much missed pioneer of the current world of alternative comics, especially those told in a female voice.

Luckily, according to the bio at the bottom of the page, Weinstein is working “on a teenage memoir tentatively titled How to Draw a Nose.” So hopefully printed work from Weinstein is on the way.
