The first Deathmate is a famous – or perhaps infamous – 90s crossover event that was the Zenith of the Chromium era, a crossover between Valiant and Image that gave birth to a rockstar creator tour even as the book itself was plagued by blown deadlines. Creators included Bob Layton, Barry Windsor-Smith, Rob Liefeld, Jim Lee, Greg Capullo, Joe Quesada, Jimmy Palmiotti, and characters were drawn from Valiant, Image and Gold Key.
According to legend, Bob Layton went to Rob Liefeld’s house and waited while he finished his part of the crossover.
Well I said it was an urban legend. Liefeld corrected the story on Twitter:
@comicsbeat correction. Layton flew in because I didn’t want him inking my work. Thought we were incompatible. Was having studio ink it.

Everyone is a lot more grown up now, and this will be a very different project. With probably only one rights holder involved. One hopes.
