As if everything crazy going on in the last hell week wasn’t enough, life keeps kicking the ass of good people. All time nice guy, Usagi Yojimbo creator Stan Sakai writes that his wife Sharon is in the ICU with a serious illness…please send them good thoughts. Sharon and Stan are both the nicest, kindest people you will ever meet anywhere on earth and they deserve every drop of good karma going their way.

And another all time good guy Ed Douglas has just been diagnosed with leukemia. Ed is known as a writer and film critic for Coming Soon where he writes the Weekend Warrior among other things. Ed is also a friend I have known for more than 20 years, a great guy that I have shared many ups and downs of life with, and countless con moments across the nation. Both myself and Ben are sending all the love and good thoughts his way that we can.

As if being diagnosed with leukemia wasn’t bad enough, Ed has no health insurance. I don’t want to hear any lectures here. In all the civilized nations, only in America is it accepted that if you don’t have enough money for insurance, you die or lose everything you own. It’s a f*cked up system that kills good people and ruins the lives of others.

Anyway a fund has been set up for Ed, and many have given generously. If somehow you hadn’t heard the news yet, here’s the link.

I won’t be updating these stories, but just keep Sharon and Ed in your thoughts.

  1. This is so sad! I’ve only met her a handful of times, but Mrs. Sakai is sooooo nice! I hope she comes through ok!

  2. Frances Larkin, wife of painter Bob Larkin (you know him from countless Marvel and Doc Savage covers), passed away Monday night after a ten-year battle with cancer.

  3. What Heidi says is way true about Ed. He’s a great guy. I have also known him for like 20 years ever since the glory days of the Comic and Animation Forum on good old Compuserve. (Where I first met Heidi as well).

She is also right about the insurance thing and I hope peeps can dig down and help Ed out. He’s one of the very good guys.

  4. My wife and i met Stan Sakai’s wife at a convention 2 years ago and she was so nice to us. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to her.
