So, everyone’s talking about the DC Super Hero Girls graphic novel… but that’s just one of 102 titles DC has announced for next summer!

So, what’s planned? Lots of television tie-ins, most of them scheduled to hit shelves after the shows premiere (just like Supergirl…) Absolute Preacher will hit shelves in July, after it premieres on AMC in May. Lucifer pubs in July, although the series will air on Fox on January 25, 2016. Seriously… the show could be cancelled before the book even hits stores! (Although I hope it does well… it’s got great dialogue!) Just like movies, the books have to be on the shelves as soon as production starts! That way, people read the hype, get curious, and pick up the book.  Imagine if Watchmen was out of print when the trailer hit! (Hey, DC, don’t believe what I say? Then go check out the sales of I am Legend during the twelve months before the film screened. Or Watchmen.)

Green Arrow joins the diamond club next November, but expect a special celebration during the summer. Or maybe not… there are a lot of characters who get 75th anthologies, but few get a special event like Batman or Superman. And Hawkman doesn’t even get a book!

Plus, there’s a lot of Modern Age classics being reprinted, centered on a particular creator like Neil Gaiman or George Perez.

What’s got me excited? Anything with a cover shown below.

What’s got you excited? Disappointed? What would you love to see back in print? Tell us!

$22.99 USD, $27.99 CAD
Hardcover
Comics & Graphic Novels / Nonfiction

Contributor Bio:
Paul Dini is a multiple Emmy and Eisner Award-winning writer and producer who has helped redefine the legends of the DC Universe in such series as The New Batman/Superman Adventures, Batman Beyond, Krypto and Justice League Unlimited. In doing so, he co-created one of the most popular characters in comics in Harley Quinn, who originated as a character in Batman: The Animated Series. In comics he has authored The World’s Greatest Super-Heroes, illustrated by Alex Ross. Dini has also collaborated with Chip Kidd on Batman Animated for HarperCollins.

Summary: The Caped Crusader has been the all-abiding icon of justice and authority for generations. But in this surprising original graphic novel, we see Batman in a new light—as the savior who helps a discouraged man recover from a brutal attack that left him unable to face the world.
In the 1990s, legendary writer Paul Dini had a flourishing career writing the hugely popular Batman: The Animated Series and Tiny Toon Adventures. Walking home one evening, he was jumped and viciously beaten within an inch of his life. His recovery process was arduous, hampered by the imagined antics of the villains he was writing for television including the Joker, Harley Quinn and the Penguin. But despite how bleak his circumstances were, or perhaps because of it, Dini also always imagined the Batman at his side, chivvying him along during his darkest moments.
DARK NIGHT: A TRUE BATMAN STORY is the harrowing and eloquent autobiographical tale of Dini’s courageous struggle to overcome a truly desperate situation. It is a Batman story like none other and one that will truly resonate with fans. Art by the incredible and talented Eduardo Risso (100 BULLETS, TRANSMETROPOLITAN).

Contributor Bio:
Alan Moore is perhaps the most acclaimed writer in the graphic story medium, having garnered countless awards for works such as WATCHMEN, V FOR VENDETTA, From Hell, Miracleman and SWAMP THING. He is also the mastermind behind the America’s Best Comics line, through which he has created (along with many talented illustrators) THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, PROMETHEA, TOM STRONG, TOMORROW STORIES and TOP 10. As one of the medium’s most important innovators since the early 1980s, Moore has influenced an entire generation of comics creators, and his work continues to inspire an ever-growing audience. Moore resides in central England.
After making his professional debut in 1975, artist Brian Bolland perfected his clean-line style and meticulous attention to detail on a series of popular strips for the British comics magazine 2000 A.D., most notably its signature feature Judge Dredd. He went on to illustrate the 12-issue maxiseries CAMELOT 3000 and the Alan Moore-written graphic novel BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE for DC before shifting his focus almost exclusively to cover illustration. His elegantly composed and beautifully rendered covers have graced a host of titles, including ANIMAL MAN, BATMAN, THE FLASH, THE INVISIBLES, WONDER WOMAN and many more.

Summary: Alan Moore takes on some of DC’s most classic characters, offering his unforgettable version of the disturbing relationship between the Dark Knight and his greatest foe, the Joker. In this groundbreaking work, Moore creates a twisted tale of insanity and human perseverance. Looking to prove that any man can be pushed past his breaking point to madness, the Joker attempts to drive Commissioner Gordon insane. Refusing to give up, Gordon struggles to maintain his sanity with the help of Batman in a desperate effort to best the madman.
This new edition presents the exquisite artwork of Brian Bolland in black and white for the first time. Collects BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE #1 and a story from BATMAN BLACK AND WHITE.

William Finger was born on February 8, 1914. He met cartoonist Bob Kane at a party in 1938, and soon after they were collaborating on several adventure strips. Within a year, Batman appeared. Finger’s fondness for pulp fiction and movies influenced his plots and writing style for comic books. He worked on many other DC characters and titles, scripted some of the 1940s daily and Sunday Batman and Robin newspaper strip continuities, and wrote for Quality, Fawcett and Timely.
Finger’s television credits include 77 Sunset Strip, The Roaring Twenties and Hawaiian Eye during the late 1950s and early 1960s. His efforts in the super-hero genre also appeared on TV in the 1960s, including material for the animated New Adventures of Superman plus a two-part Clock King episode of the 1966 Batman series. Finger died in New York City on January 24, 1974. He was posthumously inducted into the Eisner Awards Hall of Fame in 1999.
Robert Kahn was born on October 24, 1916 in the Bronx and at age 18 legally changed his name to Kane. In 1936, this self-proclaimed “compulsive doodleholic” pencilled and inked his first comic book work, Hiram Hick. By 1938 he was selling humorous filler stories to DC Comics, including Professor Doolittle and Ginger Snap. Kane met writer Bill Finger at a party in 1938, and they soon were collaborating on comic book submissions. Their most famous effort, Batman, first appeared in DETECTIVE COMICS #27 (May 1939). As Batman’s popularity demanded additional output, Kane kept up the pace by adding assistants and dropping non-Batman assignments. He discontinued his comic book efforts in mid-1943 to pencil the daily Batman and Robin newspaper strip. After the strip’s 1946 demise, Kane returned to illustrating Batman’s comic book adventures and, with the help of several ghosts, remained involved with comics until his retirement in 1968.
The success of the Batman television series brought Kane and his art back into the public eye in 1966. He was subsequently featured in various one-man art shows at galleries and museums nationwide and released a number of limited-edition lithographs. He served as a consultant on the 1989 Batman feature film and its sequels. His autobiography, Batman and Me, was published in 1989, and in 1996 he was inducted into the Eisner Awards Hall of Fame. Kane died on November 3, 1998.

After spending several years as a magazine art director and graphic designer, Cooke switched careers and began working in animation, where he contributed to such shows as Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series and Men In Black: The Series. From there, DC Comics approached Cooke to write and illustrate a project that the artist had submitted to the company years earlier: BATMAN: EGO. The critical success of the title led to more freelance work, including the relaunch of the CATWOMAN series with writer Ed Brubaker (which inspired Cooke to write and draw the graphic novel CATWOMAN: SELINA’S BIG SCORE).
Cooke then spent several years writing and drawing the ambitious epic THE NEW FRONTIER, a six-issue miniseries bridging the gap between the end of the Golden Age of comics and the beginnings of the Silver Age. He is the writer/artist of BEFORE WATCHMEN: MINUTEMEN and co-writer of BEFORE WATCHMEN: SILK SPECTRE. Currently he is working on a series of best-selling graphic novel adaptations of Richard Stark’s hard-boiled Parker crime series.

DC: THE NEW FRONTIER takes readers on an epic journey from the end of the Golden Age of heroes to the beginnings of the legendary Justice League of America.

Trade Paperback
Comics & Graphic Novels / Superheroes

Contributor Bio:
John Ostrander is a comics writer who co-created the science fiction series Grimjack with artist Timothy Truman. With his late wife, Kim Yale, he wrote DC’s SUICIDE SQUAD and MARTIAN MANHUNTER. With artist Tom Mandrake, he wrote a lengthy run of DC’s THE SPECTRE. Ostrander has also written for Marvel Comics and Warp Graphics’ Elfquest series.

Born in England and raised in Canada, John Byrne broke into comics first with Skywald and then at Charlton, where he created the character Rog-2000. Following his tenure at Charlton, Byrne moved to Marvel, where his acclaimed runs on The Uncanny X-Men and The Fantastic Four soon made him one of the most popular artists in the industry. In 1986 he came to DC to revamp Superman from the ground up, and since then he has gone on to draw and/or write every major character at both DC and Marvel.

Summary: In the wake of CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS, the heroes of the DC Universe must find a new purpose and direction in the battle for justice! Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and more have dedicated their lives to protecting the innocent and defending justice. But when G. Gordon Godfrey arrives and acts on behalf of Darkseid to create a hate campaign that outlaws super-heroic activities, the world’s greatest find themselves fighting the very people they swore to protect!
Collects the 6-issue 1986 miniseries LEGENDS, featuring art by John Byrne, legendary illustrator of The Uncanny X-Men and writer/artist of MAN OF STEEL.

[GRRRR… many years ago, I suggested that DC collect the entire Legends event for the 100th volume of their Showcase series, which normally collected 25 issues in black-and-white on newsprint. This would have been 28 issues… the six-issue miniseries, plus the 22 tie-in chapters, many of which introduced the new post-Crisis versions.

Also, Marvel should have swiped this plot for Avengers: Age of Ultron last summer with Ultron as the ghost in the machine which leaks SHIELD’s dirty secrets, which would then have made the perfect lead-in to Captain America: Civil War.]

Contributor Bio:
Joe Simon began his print career in the 1930s as an assistant art director for The Rochester Journal-American, The Syracuse Herald and The Syracuse Journal-American. He moved to New York City in 1939 and quickly found work at the comics packaging company Funnies, Inc., where he created the Fiery Mask. In 1940 he met fellow artist Jack Kirby, and the two went on to form one of the most important partnerships in comics’ Golden Age. Together they created Captain America, the Fighting American and the Guardian, as well as the characters Stuntman, Manhunter, the Boy Commandos and the Newsboy Legion. They also revamped DC’s SANDMAN feature, giving the character a much more dynamic and eye-catching look and introducing Sandy the Golden Boy to the strip.
Following World War II, Simon and Kirby branched out into new genres, publishing the horror title Black Magic as well as the first romance comic Young Romance. After Simon and Kirby went their separate ways in 1955, Simon created the humor magazine Sick and worked extensively in advertising before returning to comics in the 1960s and ’70s with Lancelot Strong, the Fly, Brother Power the Geek, Prez and the Outsiders. In 1990, Simon wrote his autobiographical history of the industry, The Comic Book Makers, and in 1999 he was inducted into the Eisner Awards Hall of Fame.

Summary: One of the stranger series ever published by DC Comics, PREZ was the story of the nation’s first teenage president. With the lowering of the voting age to 18 in the late 1960s, it was only a matter of time until a teenager ran for the highest office in the land—and in PREZ, the aptly named Prez Rickard won, becoming the first teenaged president in U.S. history! But with such power comes corruption—in this case, in the form of Boss Smiley, a literally smiley-faced political fixer who wants Prez to do his bidding.
This title collects all the appearances of Prez since his 1973 debut, including tales by Neil Gaiman (THE SANDMAN #54), Frank Miller (BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT STRIKES AGAIN #1) and Ed Brubaker (the grunge-influenced VERTIGO VISIONS: PREZ #1). Matt Wagner has enjoyed a career in comics for over twenty years. These include his groundbreaking work on the character of Batman villain Two-Face in the graphic novel FACES, as well as a five-year stint both developing and generating the stories for the fan-favorite Vertigo title, SANDMAN MYSTERY THEATRE. He also wrote the DR. MID-NITE miniseries for DC Comics and served as the regular cover artist on the Kevin Smith-penned relaunch of GREEN ARROW.
In this noir detective tale of intrigue, bigotry and incest, millionaire Wesley Dodds takes on the costumed persona of the Sandman to put and end to crime and corruption in 1930s New York. Donning a gas mask, fedora, business suit and cape, Dodds goes after the worst criminals the city has to offer, including the Tarantula, a brutal kidnapper who is mercilessly preying upon the women of high society and The Brute, a man whose gross sensual appetites for lust and violence are rivaled only by his wealth.

Born in 1914 in Cleveland, Ohio, Jerome Siegel was, as a teenager, a fan of the emerging literary genre that came to be known as science fiction. Together with schoolmate Joe Shuster, Siegel published several science-fiction fan magazines, and in 1933 they came up with their own science fiction hero—Superman. Siegel scripted and Shuster drew several weeks’ worth of newspaper strips featuring their new creation, but garnered no interest from publishers or newspaper syndicates. It wasn’t until the two established themselves as reliable adventure strip creators at DC Comics that the editors at DC offered to take a chance on the Superman material—provided it was re-pasted into comic book format for DC’s new magazine, ACTION COMICS. Siegel wrote the adventures of Superman (as well as other DC heroes, most notably the Spectre, his co-creation with Bernard Baily) through 1948 and then again from 1959-1966, in the interim scripting several newspaper strips including Funnyman and Ken Winston. Jerry Siegel died in January, 1996.

Summary: The earliest adventures of Superman, from 1940 through 1942, are collected for the first time together in one massive hardcover. In these early stories, Superman battles social injustice and political corruption, fighting for the common man, taking on crooked land developers, spoiled socialites and much more.

  1. “YES! YES YES YES! EVERYONE! Go and buy lots of copies, so we can read what happens in the Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Grades!”

Yes! Adventures in Eighth Grade is not just one of my favorite Supergirl stories, but one of my favorite Superfamily entire stories.

“Writer Chris Claremont […]. Although best known for his work on Marvel Comic’s X-Men series, he has written other seminal characters such as Batman and Superman”

I mean, sure he *has* written them, but only here in a DC solicit would that ever be counted worth the mention in a Claremont bio!

“Also, Marvel should have swiped this plot for Avengers: Age of Ultron last summer with Ultron as the ghost in the machine which leaks SHIELD’s dirty secrets, which would then have made the perfect lead-in to Captain America: Civil War.”

You mean they should have retreaded the ghost in the machine and the leaking of SHIELD secrets from Winter Soldier? Which is the movie Secret War is actually the sequel too? (But wait, it’s Marvel movies, let’s not admit they did something right.)

DC does some great prices for their massive collections of older issues. I’m more of a Marvel guy and am buying their Epic Collections, but I wish I could do that at DC prices!

  2. Why are only the writers front listed on all the titles? what happened to the artists? are they selling just the scripts?
The only artist I see is Brian Bolland next to Alan Moore…
    Lame..

  3. That’s a super neat sounding Prez collection, and I can’t express how much I’m looking forward to a nicer edition of Sandman Mystery Theater and a complete Omega Men volume (Tom King is making some stellar comics!).

A new volume of Teen Titans Earth One is a bit of a surprise. I’m glad to hear Lemire is still doing the occasional DC job.

  4. My daughter already has a copy of the original printing of Cosmic Adventures, but I shall be buying new copies as gifts. Definitely one of the all-time great Superfamily stories (as is Art Baltazar’s Superman Family Adventures, actually). And I am indeed also psyched about the possibility of getting all of Sandman Mystery Theatre in trade.

  5. Regarding the author credits:
Since everything’s digital and online now, I expect DC to update these entries with actual covers and better data. Checking the Random House Penguin website, previous editions of Y list the illustrator.

Author is still the primary entry for bibliography. It’s got to be there for minimum data entry. (Yes, I know that the illustrator is just as important in comics. But in library science, the author gets the first entry)

  6. As noted, these listings all came from Edelweiss and not from solicits direct from DC. I’m sure the actual solicits when they come out from DC will have more creator details. Iusually use Edelweiss. for checking on upcoming novel releases, so don’t usually look at the GN listings.

  7. @Torsten: Actually, in library-land it is whoever is listed first on the title page who gets listed as the Main Entry. Since comics publishers usually list the writer(s) before the artist(s), it usually is the first-listed writer who gets that honor.

(At least that’s how it was in AACR2; not sure if that’s changed in RDA, though I don’t think that it did…)

  8. Good lord…

“Yet another edition of the Killing Joke “

—according to Amazon, there is one edition of KILLING JOKE available—a $17.99 hardcover. What are you talking about?

“Absolute Preacher will hit shelves in July, after it premieres on AMC in May.”

—But this is an expensive, collector-intended title. The more affordable trades are all in print and available.

“Lucifer pubs in July, although the series will air on Fox on January 25, 2016.”

—But according to the description, this collects the new LUCIFER series, which just released issue #1.. The backlist trades of LUCIFER are all in print and available. So Vertigo has trades AND a new series on stands as the show debuts. Isn’t this the exact opposite of what you are saying?

“Imagine if Watchmen was out of print when the trailer hit!”

—We don’t have to. It wasn’t. DC sold a million copies.

“Just like movies, the books have to be on the shelves as soon as production starts!”

—As just demonstrated, they are. I thought Torsten was a book “expert”. As just demonstrated, not so much…

  9. I just pre-ordered about 20 of those on Amazon.

Those Elseworld books are exciting, as is Prez – and more Suicide Squad! I repeat, we’re half way through all of Ostrander’s Suicide Squad being collected! We live in exciting times~!
