Writer Evan Dorkin and artist Jill Thompson make an appearance at Staten Island retailer Comic Book Jones to celebrate the release of the first issue of their series BEASTS OF BURDEN, which features the supernatural adventures of a band of neighborhood pets.

Paul Karasik makes an appearance at New York’s The Strand bookstore, where he will talk about his new book, YOU SHALL DIE BY YOUR OWN EVIL CREATION, the second volume of comics by golden age cartoonist Fletcher Hanks. He will also present “The Fletcher Hanks Experience,” a multi-media safari over the harsh landscape of the psyche of Fletcher Hanks including comic panels and archival audio.

Joshn Neufeld will discuss his NY Times bestselling book A.D.: NEW ORLEANS AFTER THE DELUGE, at McNally Jackson Bookstore, along with his editor Lisa Weinert and Jeff Newelt, comics editor for SMITH Magazine, where the comics that became A.D. were originally serialized.

Cartoonist Peter Kuper (SPY VS SPY, WORLD WAR 3 ILLUSTRATED), will talk about his book DIARIO DE OAXACA, which chronicles his experiences in Oaxaca, Mexico, during the political uprising of 2006 and its aftermath. An exhibition of Kuper’s work related to the book will be on display at the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MoCCA) from Tuesday, September 15.

Special guests include Mike & Laura Allred, Darwyn Cooke, Herb Trimpe, Lou Ferringo and others. The convention will be held at Place Bonaventure, room 200-N from 11 AM – 6 PM on Saturday and 10 AM – 5 PM on Sunday. Tickets are $10 per day, or $15 for both days.

Brooklyn, NY, 6 PMBeasts of Burden signing

Bergen Street Comics hosts the Brooklyn launch party for the first issue of BEASTS OF BURDEN, a horror comic starring doggies and kitties, written by Evan Dorkin (MILK AND CHEESE) and painted by Jill Thompson (SCARY GODMOTHER). Both creators will be present to celebrate and sign copies of the issue. Refreshments will be served, and Thompson will be selling a new print.


Saturday, September 19

Santa Rosa, CA, 1 PM – 3 PMBrian Crane at Charles M. Schulz Museum

Brian Crane, cartoonist of the syndicated comic strip PICKLES, will give a talk about his work at the Charles M. Schulz Museum. Admission to the museum is $8. The talk will be preceded by a masterclass from Crane at 10 AM, which requires advanced reservation and costs $40.

Mesa, AZ, 3 PM – 4 PMFall Out Boy at Atomic Comics

The comic book in question was written by Brett Lewis and drawn by Sam Basri, who are not “members of the multiplatinum band Fall Out Boy,” so presumably they will not be there, but if you are a fan of Fall Out Boy, this could be right up your alley.
