Comics refuse to be overshadowed by politics this week as both Chris Onstad and Art Spiegelman hit the Eastern tour circuit, and new exhibitions featuring some of the world’s best cartoonists open across America. Plus, Philadelphia hosts one of this fall’s best panels on graphic novels.

Naperville, IL, 6 PM – 8 PMThe Art of Dick Locher at Wentz Fine Arts Center

Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist Dick Locher, who has been the artist of the DICK TRACY comic strip since 1983, is the subject of a new art exhibition in his hometown of Naperville. Locher will meet fans at the exhibition’s opening reception today at North Central College‘s Wentz Concert Hall and Fine Arts Center. The exhibition runs through December 4.

Ann Arbor, MI, 7 PM – 8:30 PMChris Onstad at Ann Arbor District Library

Chris Onstad, creator of the cult-favorite webcomic ACHEWOOD kicks off the November leg of his tour in support of his new book THE GREAT OUTDOOR FIGHT from Dark Horse Comics with a stop at the Ann Arbor District Library. He’ll briefly sign books and then answer questions from fans, the only Q&A session of the tour.

Portland, OR, 6 – 10 PM – FIVE exhibition at Floating World Comics

Gabriel Bá , Becky Cloonan , Rafael Grampá, Vasilis Lolos , and Fábío Moon took home an Eisner this year for their wordless anthology 5, which they self-published. The critically-acclaimed quintet are now subjects of an art exhibition at Portland retailer Floating World Comics featuring original art from 5, and their new collaboration PIXU, along with their individual projects, which include DEMO, THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY, PIRATES OF CONEY ISLAND, MESMO DELIVERY and CASANOVA.

ZIPPY THE PINHEAD cartoonist Bill Griffith makes a rare public appearance in the Northwest for the opening of an exhibition of his work at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery, just south of downtown Seattle. A new hardcover Zippy collection, WELCOME TO DINGBURG makes its debut at the event as well. The exhibition runs through December 10.
