Comics refuse to be overshadowed by politics this week as both Chris Onstad and Art Spiegelman hit the Eastern tour circuit, and new exhibitions featuring some of the world’s best cartoonists open across America. Plus, Philadelphia hosts one of this fall’s best panels on graphic novels.

Monday, November 3

Naperville, IL, 6 PM – 8 PM – The Art of Dick Locher at Wentz Fine Arts Center

Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist Dick Locher, who has been the artist of the DICK TRACY comic strip since 1983, is the subject of a new art exhibition in his hometown of Naperville. Locher will meet fans at the exhibition’s opening reception today at North Central College‘s Wentz Concert Hall and Fine Arts Center. The exhibition runs through December 4.

Monday, November 3

Ann Arbor, MI, 7 PM – 8:30 PM – Chris Onstad at Ann Arbor District Library

Chris Onstad, creator of the cult-favorite webcomic ACHEWOOD kicks off the November leg of his tour in support of his new book THE GREAT OUTDOOR FIGHT from Dark Horse Comics with a stop at the Ann Arbor District Library. He’ll briefly sign books and then answer questions from fans, the only Q&A session of the tour.

Toronto, ON, 7 PM – Chris Onstad at The Beguiling

ACHEWOOD creator Chris Onstad stops at Toronto retailer The Beguiling in support of his new book THE GREAT OUTDOOR FIGHT. As it’s the night of the US Presidential Elections, The Beguiling promises a few special surprises that will allow everyone to follow along with the results while they’re at the event.

Wednesday, November 5

Evanston, IL, 4 – 7 PM – Chris Onstad at Comix Revolution

Chris Onstad will appear at Illinois’ Comix Revolution to greet fans and sign copies of THE GREAT OUTDOOR FIGHT, Dark Horse’s hardcover compilation of strips from his cult favorite webcomic ACHEWOOD.

Thursday, November 6

Portland, OR, 6 – 10 PM – FIVE exhibition at Floating World Comics

Gabriel Bá , Becky Cloonan , Rafael Grampá, Vasilis Lolos , and Fábío Moon took home an Eisner this year for their wordless anthology 5, which they self-published. The critically-acclaimed quintet are now subjects of an art exhibition at Portland retailer Floating World Comics featuring original art from 5, and their new collaboration PIXU, along with their individual projects, which include DEMO, THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY, PIRATES OF CONEY ISLAND, MESMO DELIVERY and CASANOVA.

Thursday, November 6

Philidelphia, PA, 7:30 PM – Art Spiegelman, Charles Burns, David Heatley, Jessica Abel and Chip Kidd at Free Library of Philidelphia

Holy smoke. Art Spiegelman (MAUS), Charles Burns (BLACK HOLE), David Heatley (MY BRAIN IS HANGING UPSIDE DOWN), Jessica Abel (LA PERDITA) and Chip Kidd (BAT-MANGA) all get together on what is quite possibly one of the most prodigious graphic novels panel of the year. And it’s free!

Washington, DC, 7 PM – Art Spiegelman at Politics and Prose

Legendary cartoonist Art Spiegelman makes his sole solo appearance this week in support of his new books BREAKDOWNS and JACK IN THE BOX at D.C. bookshop Politics and Prose.

Brooklyn, NY, 7 PM – Chris Onstad at Rocketship

Continuing his whirlwind tour, ACHEWOOD creator Chris Onstad touches down for a signing at Brooklyn retailer Rocketship.

Saturday, November 8

Boston, MA, 2 – 4 PM – Chris Onstad at The Million Year Picnic

Chris Onstad makes his final tour appearance in November at Harvard Square retailer The Million Year Picnic. Rumor is this signing will be followed by an afterparty with Boston synth-pop band Freezepop, location likely TBA at the signing.

Georgetown, WA, 6 PM – 9 PM – Bill Griffith exhibition opens at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery

ZIPPY THE PINHEAD cartoonist Bill Griffith makes a rare public appearance in the Northwest for the opening of an exhibition of his work at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery, just south of downtown Seattle. A new hardcover Zippy collection, WELCOME TO DINGBURG makes its debut at the event as well. The exhibition runs through December 10.
