Yesterday’s B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know #5 may have seemed like a mild mannered comic book, but as revealed in THR, its last pages held a shocking secret.

The issue was co-written by Mike Mignola and Scott Allie, with art by Lawrence Campbell and longtime Hellboy amanuensis Dave Stewart. In case you don’t want to be spiled please go hum a few minutes and run to your LCS – or perhaps your favored digital provider.

Back? Okay, you may remember that Hellboy himself died in the comics in 2011 – a full 7 years ago although it seems like yesterday, maybe because he wandered through the afterlife in the award winning Hellboy in Hell storyline.

However, in BPRD:TDYK the team digs up a coffin that contains a certain big red…whose eye perhaps blinks open.

Let’s face it, a demon staying dead would be a bit more surprising, but still…we’ve missed Hellboy. I’m told that this storyline was in the works for years, but the timing is fortuitous as a new Hellboy movie is also in the works for next year.

Mignola did some bean spilling to THR: “For a very long time we’ve known where this series was going. The reveal at the end of issue five was planned years ago and I sincerely hope it catches readers by surprise. The internet being what it is, it’s not easy to keep secrets these days, but I’m hopeful fans will help us out and keep a lid on things for awhile, until more people have had a chance to read the comic.”

Dropping a bombshell like this in the holidays is a good way to catch people by surprise. But the demon is out of the coffin now, or soon will be.

  1. It’s too bad Scott Allie is involved in making these books. Oh well…

I’m determined to keep my entertainment as free or sexual abusers as much as I can.
