  1. Am I the only one who wishes they’d have gone with actual WILL EISNER artwork for that poster? Ugh.

  2. Though not a fan of the Spirit, that poster, brought to you by Sin City, definitely leaves something to be desired.

  3. I dunno guys. I think it would just be too difficult to find a classic, moody, iconic Eisner image to use in the promo art.

I mean, you’d actually have to ya know… open any random page of any random Spirit book.

  4. Miller goes on and on in his video welcome about Eisner being his mentor, so I’m a bit surprised that he wouldn’t feel compelled to use authentic Eisner artwork for the movie poster. Eisner deserves to have HIS imagery associated with this film. It’s probably the greatest exposure the character is ever going to have.

  5. OR … Miller could have taken an iconic Eisner piece and redrawn/lightboxed it. There may be several Eisner illustrations that don’t work without removing type, panel borders, etc.

But yeah … when I first saw that poster … Ugh …

  6. It’s a horrible piece of art to be associated with this film. It’s like they are selling it to the Sin City audien….. ooooooh, right.

  7. Oh, that poster is ugly. No denying it. Doesn’t it sound like Frank Miller has a cold in his video greeting?

    >”stressing the importance of story and a message board”

You know, message boards *are* important. :)

  8. Well, *I* like the poster. Its the Spirit in Eisner’s style. Its difficult to accept a Spirit not by Eisner, but Darwyn Cooke helps. Iz cool.

  9. I like the art on the post but immediately feel it’s out of place for something that belongs to Will Eisner. It’s just . . . the “feel” of Eisner art is far different from Miller. I love both, but in this situation, it’s a lot like crossbreeding the art for Heman with My Little Ponies.

  10. Wow – the official release date is 1/16/09??

That’s like four days after my 45th birthday!!

Oh, there’s going to be a one hell of a party at my house!!

Thanks Frank for looking out for me!

  11. This is Hollywood. Frank Miller’s art has been associated with TWO well received movies, one of them a genuine worldwide hit.

This movie is selling to the non fan public on the basis of the involvement of the creator of 300 and SIN CITY not because of Will Eisner.

It is sad, but this is the way the world works.

  12. “Content thus far includes a video greeting from Frank Miller stressing the importance of story….”

Right…like All-Star Batman & Robin. That’s some great storytelling there, Frank.

  13. “And how wide is his stance?”

Larry Craig-wide, from the looks of it. I do think it’s a little weird to market the movie in this fashion, but I actually kind of like this image. I certainly like it more than any of the covers Miller has done for All-Star Bats.

  14. I just hope they have enough sense to make the credits at the beginning blended into the backgrounds and architecture a la Eisner’s famous word crafting in the Spirit stories. :)

  15. But you gotta admit that Frank looks GREAT in that hat, right?

    (No? He doesn’t?)

Kind of like Lamont Cranston on Benzedrine…..

  16. I agree with Fanboy Menace. In fact I’d love to see a movie poster version of that look. That’s be cool!

  17. “This movie is selling to the non fan public on the basis of the involvement of the creator of 300 and SIN CITY not because of Will Eisner.

“It is sad, but this is the way the world works.”

Fair enough. But, how about some GOOD poster artwork. This one isn’t a keeper.
