Welcome to The Beat’s Wednesday Pulse!

This series will check in with what’s coming out in comic stores each and every week, offering insight to some of the most anticipated releases on the stands. In the end, we’re hoping to shine a spotlight on things you might not know you’d enjoy… and hope to offer a space for you to share what you are excited for this week.

Please note: our opinions are ours, and yours are yours – and while we encourage you to share your likes, this is not a forum to discourage others for enjoying what they enjoy. Comics are for everyone.

PREMIERE PUBLISHERS

HIGHEST HOUSE TP
(IDW PUBLISHING)

(Cover by Yuko Shimizu)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // To be born a slave is in fact not a fatality. And facts can be changed. In the country of Ossaniul, there is a fortress that is as disproportionate as it is inaccessible: the Highest House. Its masters, the noble family of Aldercrest, reign over a veritable army of slaves. At the bottom of the ladder, young Moth performs the most thankless tasks and has little hope of living past childhood. Until the day he meets Obsidian, a mysterious prisoner of the House who whispers to him in his sleep. If Moth does what he asks, Obsidian will give him fortune and glory. And there’s every indication that Obsidian can make good on his promises. Will Moth accept the offer?

Through a subtle alternate history, The Highest House takes us to a fictional country reminiscent of the Balkan kingdoms of the 16th century. Mike Carey and Peter Gross (Lucifer, The Unwritten) draw from this context a captivating fantasy narrative that reflects on the human soul, the corrupting power of slavery, and the inequalities of class, all from the different perspectives of the House’s many inhabitants. Both immediate and timeless, Highest House is a multifaceted fantasy sure to stay with readers long after the final page has turned.

THE BEAT SAYS // This series features some of the best work in Carey and Gross’ careers, which is saying a lot. Originally released in albums over in Europe, this story is presented in an oversized format, with the beautiful kind of work that the longer, more attentive deadlines of the European market allow.

MARVEL ACTION SPIDER-MAN #1
(IDW PUBLISHING)

(Cover by Fico Ossio)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // Readers of all ages can get tangled up in these all new adventures of Spider-Man and his astonishing friends! Peter Parker has thrown down with deadly villains and legendary heroes, but high school life might be his greatest challenge yet. Luckily, he has a shot at making the grade with a little help from his new friends… Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy! A Marvelous new era begins here!

THE BEAT SAYS // It was only a matter of time before Marvel started farming the content of their all ages line out to other companies. These books are well needed in this industry, and Marvel has been a long way behind DC in producing content that very young kids are digging into. Books like this, the upcoming Avengers book, and the Black Panther title (by Kyle Baker, no less!) should provide great content for the gap in the Marvel line.

IRONHEART #1
(MARVEL COMICS)

(Cover by Amy Reeder)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // THE FORMER STAR OF INVINCIBLE IRON MAN HEADLINES HER OWN SOLO SERIES!

When a group of world leaders is taken hostage by one of Spider-Man’s old foes, Riri Williams will have to step up her game. And she’ll be stunned when someone from back in Sweet Home Chicago enters her life…  CHAMPIONS artist Kevin Libranda joins award-winning poet Eve Ewing, as Ironheart steps boldly out of Tony Stark’s shadow to forge her own future!

THE BEAT SAYS // There’s a lot of buzz surrounding this series. Fresh off of staring in the previous Invincible Iron Man series, Iron Heart gets a book of her own, with an incredible writer. Marvel provided us with a look of the whole first issue, and it does an incredible job of re-introducing Riri Williams to new readers, while providing enough of a story engine for those who have been around from the beginning. This is another book that should grab the burgeoning young readers market that is the true driving heart (and future) of this industry.

DC NUCLEAR WINTER SPECIAL #1
(DC Comics)

(Cover by Yanick Paquette)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // The holidays are tough enough as it is, but when you’re living in a post-apocalyptic wasteland (or, you know, 2018) the world can seem bleaker than ever. So do yourself a favor this holiday season, break out your best eggnog and enjoy 10 all-new stories featuring the World’s Greatest Heroes, including looks at the futures of Batman, Superman and the Flash, as well as many more denizens of the DC Universe.

THE BEAT SAYS // DC Comics has been putting out these anthologies on the regular, mixing stories from upcoming talent with established creators. Past anthologies have featured sequential art from high-demand cover artist Francesco Mattina, first appearances by new characters, and a whole lot more. Announced for this special, is work from Paul Dini and Cully Hamner. What else will be in store? You’ll have to wait and find out.

EMMA G WILDFORD HC
(Titan Comics)

(Cover by Edith)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // Journey back in time to the roaring twenties, and across England and Lapland, to experience the charming and thrilling adventure of Emma G. Wildford, a tale that mixes mystery, grand adventure, and love. It’s been fourteen months since Emma G. Wildford’s fiancé, Roald Hodges, a member of the National Geographic Society board the good ship Kinship and set sail for Norway… and she has had no news of him since. Every day, she questions the other members of the Society about his whereabouts, and his current situation, whether good or ill, but to no avail. Before he left, Roald gave Emma a mysterious envelope to open, but only in case something happened to him. Rejecting the very thought of Roald’s death, Emma decides to leave behind everything – her life, her comfort, her England, to go to Lapland in pursuit.

Along the way, Emma’s certainties and beliefs will be challenged in every way, changing this quest for her fiancé into a quest for her true, essential self.

Beautifully illustrated and rivetingly written, Emma G. Wildford is a character that will imprint herself on your mind and memory forever!

THE BEAT SAYS // This stunning book tackles themes of adventure and self discovery, building story from the heart. An incredible read.

KISMET MAN OF FATE SC
(A Blue Wave World)

(Cover by Natasha Alterici)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // Kismet was the world’s first Muslim superhero, fighting Nazis behind enemy lines in WWII. Then, he disappeared. Gone without a trace… until now. Back from beyond, Kismet finds a new world of advanced technology and equal rights still fighting against the same old evils of bigotry, greed, and ignorance.

THE BEAT SAYS // The concept alone piques interest, reimagining the traditional Captain America narrative to illustrate how different backgrounds both change narratives… and keep them exactly the same.

PRINCELESS FIND YOURSELF #1
(Action Lab Comics)

(Cover by Onyinye Anakor)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // Finally, after all this time, Adrienne is on the way to rescue her oldest sister, Alize. Since the day she left the tower, this is as far as she had planned. Now, it’s all falling apart. Bedelia stayed behind in the mountains with her family and now Adrienne can’t find Alize’s tower. Will she end up lost and alone wandering the desert? Meanwhile, Devin and his friends have stumbled onto an army attacking aa town right on the borders of their kingdom? Who are they and what do they want?

THE BEAT SAYS // The best selling series about a Princess who decides to save herself and her sisters returns here. This will be 7th volume in the series, and it looks like the story is starting to wrap up. If the sound of the concept intrigues you, all the previous volumes are available, and priced for a young reader audience.

QUINCREDIBLE #1
(Lion Forge Comics)

(Cover by Michelle Wong)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // Quinton, a high school sophomore, is looking to live his best life by moonlighting as a superhero. The catch? His power is invulnerability . . . and that’s the only power he has.

THE BEAT SAYS // This is the latest release from Lion Forge’s Catalyst line of comics, which focus on under represented demographics in superhero stories. The whole line has offered very interesting looks at how a modern superhero universe can form, using a shared universe while focusing more on individual stories. You don’t need to buy the whole line to get what’s going on, just enjoy the corners that you’re reading about without worry. Add to that the interesting twists like this one – what does a superhero do if they can’t be hurt… but can’t really do much else. How do you take down a villain when they still have the strength to knock you down?

  1. God, the cover art for Ironheart #1 looks awful. How did that get cleared by Marvel Editorial?

Really looking forward to Dejah Thoris/Vampirella #3 this week. Hopefully Dejah gets turned into a vampire this issue, something that was teased back in her original series but never followed up on.
