Welcome to The Beat’s Wednesday Pulse!
This series will check in with what’s coming out in comic stores each and every week, offering insight to some of the most anticipated releases on the stands. In the end, we’re hoping to shine a spotlight on things you might not know you’d enjoy… and hope to offer a space for you to share what you are excited for this week.
Please note: our opinions are ours, and yours are yours – and while we encourage you to share your likes, this is not a forum to discourage others for enjoying what they enjoy. Comics are for everyone.
FEATURED TITLES FROM PREMIERE PUBLISHERS
(Cover by Taj Tenfold)
THE PUBLISHER SAYS // Hugo Award-nominated novelist Saladin Ahmed (Black Bolt) and artist Sami Kivela (Beautiful Canvas) present one woman’s search for the truth that destroyed her family. Hard-nosed, chain-smoking tabloid reporter Elena Abbott investigates a series of grisly crimes that the police have ignored. Crimes she knows to be the work of dark occult forces. Forces that took her husband from her. Forces she has sworn to destroy.
THE BEAT SAYS // A thunderous release that should not be ignored. Elements of noir and blacksploitation intermingle with the supernatural in 1970s Detroit, as Elan Abbott deals with horrors both of this realm, and beyond.
BLOODSTRIKE BRUTALISTS TP (MR)
(Cover by Michel Fiffe)
THE PUBLISHER SAYS // Whether it’s the origin of an undead strikeforce or solving the trail of mysteries that plague them, this story shines a light on the classic Image series while introducing the concept to a brand new audience. As the creator of the indie hit Copra, MICHEL FIFFE celebrates Image’s most extreme series as only a comics auteur can.
THE BEAT SAYS // The past few years have proven that the aesthetic found in small print publication works extremely well with mass comics. Here, Fiffe takes on missing parts of the Rob Liefeld created Bloodstrike and puts his own spin on things… while still exhibiting an undying love for the source material.
ISOLA TP VOL 01
(Cover by Karl Kerschl & Msassyk)
THE PUBLISHER SAYS // An evil spell has been cast on the Queen of Maar, and her Captain of the Guard will do anything to reverse it. Their only hope lies on an island half a world away-a place known in myth as Isola, land of the dead. Gotham Academy creators BRENDEN FLETCHER and KARL KERSCHL reunite with series colorist MSASSYK and letterer ADITYA BIDIKAR for a breathtaking fantasy adventure two decades in the making. Recommended for fans of Studio Ghibli and the work of Hayao Miyazaki.
THE BEAT SAYS // Now that this lush series has made its way to the graphic novel format, you can guarantee you’re going to hear even more buzz about how good this comic is. While the issues helped mitigate the pain of waiting for more story, we believe this is the format this story was meant to be read in, allowing the reader to really amerce themselves in the world, and live with the characters.
(Cover by David Lapham)
THE PUBLISHER SAYS // A handsome drifter murders his way through the midwest while hiding in plain sight as a travel blogger, leaving families in shreds and body bags in his wake. Ricky Toledo was fifteen when she fell hard for “Dante”-until he killed her mother and got her father sent to prison for it. It’s three years later, and Ricky will stop at nothing to get revenge. Lodger is a dark, grimy, psychological thriller-a game of cat and mouse between a broken young woman and a serial killer-and like all the best crime noir… a twisted love story.
THE BEAT SAYS // David and Maria Lapham bring their brilliantly twisted criminal minds to a brand new story here. Without a doubt, this story will go to places you would never expect, much like all of their stories tend to. Getting more from this team is always extremely welcome.
SUPER MARIO ENCYCLOPEDIA HC + LTD ED HC
(Dark Horse Comics)
(Cover by Nintendo)
THE PUBLISHER SAYS // The Super Mario Encyclopedia is jam-packed with content from all seventeen Super Mario games and spans more than 30 years of the franchises history –from the original Super Mario Bros to Super Mario 3D World. Track the evolution of the Goomba, witness the introduction of Yoshi, and relive your favorite levels. With information on enemies, items, obstacles, and worlds from over thirty years of Mario, Super Mario Encyclopedia is the definitive resource for everything Super Mario!
THE BEAT SAYS // Dark Horse has already had huge success with their Legend of Zelda encyclopedias, and if this features the very same attention to detail, you’ll want this in your life as well.

BANANA SUNDAY GN
Cover by Colleen Coover
THE PUBLISHER SAYS // Banana Sunday, the classic story by Eisner Award-winning Bandette co-creators Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover, is now presented in full color, with a brand-new introduction and bonus materials! Kirby Steinberg is having a bit of trouble fitting into her new school. Sure, there’s the usual problems associated with being from “somewhere else,” but this time the new kid also happens to be the guardian for three talking primates. Chuck, the professorial orangutan. Knobby, the love-stricken spider monkey. Go-Go, the befuddled golden gorilla. These primates have learned to speak, thanks to the scientific processes of Kirby’s father. Or have they? What’s their real story? That’s what Nickels – Kirby’s new best friend and unfortunately dedicated school reporter – would like to discover. Can Kirby find time to develop a relationship with Martin, the dashing nerd? Steer clear of Skye, the high school’s #1 pillar of arrogance? Keep Knobby, Chuck and Go-Go from causing untold catastrophes? And, above all, will Kirby be able to hide the real origin of these three simians from Nickels? Oh, probably not.
THE BEAT SAYS // This book works a classic madcap 60s Archie style with a flair completely its own. Also, it has super science monkeys. Lost in the shuffle many, many years ago and never-before-collected, this is a hilarious book that all ages will be able to enjoy.
FANTE BUKOWSKI GN VOL 03 THREE PERFECT FAILURE
(Cover by Noah Van Sciver)
THE PUBLISHER SAYS // In this third and final installment of the fan-favorite series “starring” self-styled literary superstar-to-be Fante Bukowski, Noah Van Sciver once again skewers the literary pretensions of his self-important title character. With an ear for hilarious dialogue and no end of grist for the mill, Van Sciver has garnered multiple Eisner Awards nominations and made Bukowski more popular than he could have ever hoped.
THE BEAT SAYS // Definitely a book we’ve been waiting for with baited breath. Noah Van Sciver (yes, related – but entirely his own human unto himself) exhibits a razor-sharp satirical wit, and displays a remarkable ability for self reflection in this series. Tackling ideas of pretension within craft and the cultures that grow around it, this has been a very entertaining and topical read.
ROLLED AND TOLD #2
(Cover by Jemma Salume)
THE PUBLISHER SAYS // We’re celebrating Halloween in Rolled & Told! Writers E.L. Thomas and Anne Toole go grim and give you all the shambling, undead horror you and your group of wild and ready role players can handle! In our full adventure, a strange malady grips a small farming village; the last thing they need is a horde of undead rising from all around them. Your player characters will get to literally reap what has been sown!
THE BEAT SAYS // Normally, we wouldn’t talk too deep about a second issue of anything, but this series deserves special notice. Built like monthly roll playing adventure games of old, Rolled and Told mixes the storytelling elements of comics and gaming guides to be a wholly unique experience. What’s more, these are adventures built for the burgeoning Lumberjane set of humans, who have been itching for a bit more inclusivity in their gaming guides – and they are getting it in spades here.
MENTAL LOAD FEMINIST COMICS GN
(SEVEN STORIES PRESS)
(Cover by Emma)
THE PUBLISHER SAYS // In her first book of comic strips, Emma reflects on social and feminist issues by means of simple line drawings, dissecting the mental load, ie., all that invisible and unpaid organizing, list-making and planning women do to manage their lives, and the lives of their family members. In her strips Emma deals with themes ranging from maternity leave (it is not a vacation!), domestic violence, the clitoris, the violence of the medical world on women during childbirth, and other feminist issues, and she does so in a straightforward way that is both hilarious and deadly serious. If you’re not laughing, you’re probably crying in recognition.
THE BEAT SAYS // The more information like this that is available in wider ranges of formats, the better. Chances are, you’ve run across one or two of these strips online before, and they always contain vital information, both for the subject, and the folks who should be listening.
DEAD KINGS #1
(Cover by Matthew Dow Smith)
THE PUBLISHER SAYS // Sasha never saw his younger brother…until the secret police made him disappear. Sasha Vasnetsov left Thrice-Nine-the dirty folklore world that limps along in the wreckage of a Technomagic War-thirty years ago and never looked back. But word that the secret police have sent his brother Gena to a work camp for the socially degenerate drags him back, with a promise to free Gena and return him to their mother before her fiftieth birthday. The only problem? Sasha isn’t a fraction of the tough guy he tries to be, so if he’s going to break back into Thrice-Nine…he’ll need help. Sasha’s only hope is Maria Kamenaya, a former Technomagic Warrior with hundreds of enemy kills to her name, betrayed by the country that made her when her honor conflicted with their agenda.
Thrice-Nine took Sasha’s brother, and it took Maria’s heart. This quest is how they get both of those things back, in the steaming, lawless land of decapitated states…the land of DEAD KINGS.
Like True Grit set in the world of Final Fantasy, DEAD KINGS is unrelenting with its passion and thrills, massive in scale and unflinching as it peers into the underside of the obligations that drive us all: to family and country. It’s a classic Wild West revenge cast against a haunting, awe-inspiring vision of a future where we’ve mortally wounded the world, and the prisoners are the only ones left to run the penitentiary.
Written by Steve Orlando (Batman/Shadow, Crude, Midnighter, Virgil) and drawn by Matthew Dow Smith (October Girl, Suicide Squad, X-Files) DEAD KINGS continues Orlando’s in-depth ex-ploration of retribution in all its dark, complex forms. Having burst forth from the restrictions of the modern world’s flesh and bone, Orlando and Smith create a whole new world of iron-and-oil fantasy, paths walked by a redemption-fueled older brother and the abandoned, rusted out, vindictive tool of a bygone war that protects him-this is us AFTER the World Wars of Mechs and Magic, broken hearts and busted fists included, a world you would ONLY find at AfterShock!
THE BEAT SAYS // Aftershock really leaves it all out on the field in their solicitations, so chances are we’re not going to say anything you didn’t already pick up from reading the above. That said, Steve Orlando’s creator owned work is always worth checking out, as the books always have something very interesting to say.

ANDY LIFE & TIMES OF ANDY WARHOL GN (SelfMadeHero) // From the publisher: From the 32 canvas Campbell’s Soup Cans to the Marilyn Diptych, Andy Warhol’s silk-screen prints are the epitome of Pop Art: witty, gimmicky and unafraid of repetition. Obsessed with consumerism and the cult of celebrity, Warhol (1928-1987) exalted the “surface of things”-and yet he was a man of deep complexity. In Andy, Typex captures the remarkable life of the king of Pop Art, from his working-class upbringing in Pittsburgh to the dizzying heights of his celebrity. Spanning Warhol’s early career as a commercial illustrator, his relationship with the Velvet Underground, and the development of his own instantly recognizable style, Andy is an exhilarating portrait of a transcendent artist and a master self-promoter.”

Her mother and sister beg her to be a better student, sister, daughter; her beleaguered father expresses his concerns with his fists. Bad Friends is set in the 1990s in a South Korea torn between tradition and Western modernity and haunted by an air of generalized gloom. What unfolds is a story of female friendship, a Ferrante-esque connection formed through youthful excess, malaise, and struggle that stays with the young women into adulthood.

In the refugee center, worlds collide and Fizgerald’s story entwines the complex themes of political and personal displacement. He’s taking classes with his grandmother and helping to keep an eye on his great-uncle whose corrupted magic wreaked havoc on the family. Meanwhile, Aster’s friend from the non-magical part of town, Charlie, is having problems of her own – a curse has tried to attach itself to her.
