Just ahead of the holiday, WB invited a number of outlets (not the Beat though! sighhhh) to see an advance screening of Aquaman well ahead of its debut later next month. Today, they were allowed to share their “social media sentiment”, as it’s called in the biz these days, and while no one can share plot details – you get a pretty good sense of where things are going from the below tweets. I’ve tried my best to collect as many as I could find over the short 15 minute period when the embargo lifted…and just from the below, you get a pretty wide range, but cartoony and goofy pop up a few times. I mean, it’s Aquaman though, a little bit of silliness is totally par for the course.
To be honest with you, I’ve been getting a serious Big Trouble in Little China vibe from this thing, especially the last few images and trailers that just seem to scream “80’s action Kurt Russell”. That’s the kind of genre riff I’m here for.
#Aquaman is an epic fantasy adventure on the high seas! It’s packed with thrilling action in a dazzling underwater world like nothing I’ve ever seen in superhero movies, or anywhere else. I had a total blast watching this movie & so will you. See it on the biggest screen you can! pic.twitter.com/uRWXDTE48K

I can finally share some brief thoughts on #Aquaman. Can’t mention plot or technical stuff, so I’ll just say that Jason Mamoa is charismatic as hell in the lead and the film gives off a fun fantasy vibe 👌 Doubt anyone will mock Aquaman for talking to fish after this comes out. pic.twitter.com/EFpPJ3enmq

Aquaman is a breathtakingly beautiful, weird, badass, FUN idea of a modern superhero fantasy (anime) and makes zero apologies. Second half’s one cheer/laugh after another.
Imagine ’80s Schwarzenegger starring in “Hideo Kojima’s AVATAR” and you’re most of the way there. #Aquaman pic.twitter.com/nmZYjcUm5q

Fighting back the tide of DC negativity, #Aquaman is a lot of fun and brilliantly shot. It’s not without its flaws, yet Jason Momoa is a charismatic lead and it very much feels like a @creepypuppet movie. Check back on @digitalspy on December 11 for the full review. pic.twitter.com/LyD8Pfy84d

#AQUAMAN is an absolute blast! James Wan creates a thrilling story & makes a worthy entry in the DCEU
Full of spectacle & highlighted by creatures of the abyss, Wan creates an engaging adventure. The heart/emotion of the film resonated most, amplified by strong cast performances pic.twitter.com/GVj7tnO51o

Chalk up a big, wet win for DC. @creepypuppet’s #Aquaman is an epic, swing-for-the-fences adventure that plunges fans into incredibly creative worlds. Goofy in spots, but it’s rollicking fun. See it on the biggest screen possible! pic.twitter.com/ahODJ4mJAI

#Aquaman is the most ambitious DC movie to date — a big, sprawling visual spectacle that is gorgeous, crazy, stuffed with terrific action, and a lot of fun to watch. James Wan, in my opinion, is the true star – he elevates the material, makes it entertaining and conquers it. pic.twitter.com/gDFjiAWICA

Aquaman is a big, fun, wild ride. It’s unabashedly melodramatic and over the top with the largest, most ambitious sense of scale imaginable. Parts of it are kind of bad but they are not the majority and, oddly, still fit in with the cartoony tone. 2nd best DCU movie. YEEEAAHH! pic.twitter.com/3GLlK3uQJ3

#Aquaman is a buckwild movie which is honestly both good and bad in (almost) equal measure. If nothing else, it looks great and it’s completely unafraid to just go for it, which I appreciate in it.

#Aquaman was outstanding. James Wan definitely loves the character and brings audiences one of the most unique super hero origin films in years. Tonally it strikes the right line! Feeling very similar to Sam Rami’s Spider-Man

If you take all of the subtext and character work out of BLACK PANTHER and made it a tad longer with bad dialogue, you got AQUAMAN. Great world building though.

#Aquaman is like an 80s cartoon, with all of the fun and the problems that come with that. A good adventure movie that acknowledges exactly what it is from the start, which is a meal made almost entirely of ham.

Excited I can now say how much I enjoyed #Aquaman! It’s a cool adventure built on some tremendous action sequences and set pieces, with a great hero arc/performance from Jason Momoa as the glue. There’s fun world building, and it looks wonderful. A great step for the DCEU. pic.twitter.com/Z5iPdilMIR

#Aquaman is great. James Wan made a really unique super hero origin film, often crossing into fantasy-epic territory, but grounded in family and discovery.
The world is visually incredible. Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry is a total bad-ass. @yahya and @patrickwilson73 stand out! pic.twitter.com/2IvDCEq7VU

You should be ASHAMED of that click bait headline.
This looks awful to me – like most comic book movies – and I’m not surprised.
I hope the people who see it enjoy it.
“To be honest with you, I’ve been getting a serious Big Trouble in Little China vibe from this thing, especially the last few images and trailers that just seem to scream “80’s action Kurt Russell”.
If it’s as funny as “Big Trouble” — a movie that a lot of people hated in the ’80s, because they went expecting a “serious” action movie a la Rambo — I’ll probably like it.
And the CGI does look cartoony, as I noted months ago. Not sure why they didn’t just dump the actors and make the whole thing animated.
We headline-shame now?
Early reactions on twitter I remember how amazing BVS was being called by these people.
These advance twitter comments always read like studio PR.
I remember how excited nerds were over “Snakes on a Plane,” too …
