§ Nice art: Mary Blair  — I was looking up something for an email question and found this scan of Mary Blair’s Cinderella picture book.  Blair, a scene painter, ride designer, illustrator, is perhaps the ultimate nice art. § Headline of the day: Holy crap you guys! There’s a Well-known cartoonist in town! The cartoonist is Lynn Johnston, […]

Whooooo-ah! This whole Angoulême-gate thing got out of hand FAST. In just 24 hours it went from an angry petition to the world’s best cartoonists rejecting their nominations to front page news to the festival sulkily added Marjane Satrapi and Posy Simmonds to their list, even though no one would vote for them, and a whirlwind of hot takes.

The Angoulême Dining Guide: it’s a lot more than crêpes

by Abby Denson, with Jessica Abel and Xavier Lancel So you’re going to Angoulême? Lucky you! I’ve exhibited with Xavier Lancel for the past several years and thought I’d share some of my favorite places to eat while at the festival. Even better, Angoulême resident Jessica Abel kindly agreed to vet my suggestions and add […]

We’re going to Angoulême!

IMG_2474.jpg

At long last, I’m going to the Angoulême Comics Festival! Or to give it its proper name, the FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL DE LA BANDE DESSINÉE. The Angoulême Festival is the largest non-manga comics gathering in the world, as some 200,000 comics lovers flood the medieval town to look at displays, listen to concerts, get books signed, […]
