Marvel has just announced a brand new ongoing title featuring Rebel pilot Poe Dameron from writer Charles Soule (Star Wars: Lando) and artist Phil Noto (Star Wars: Chewbacca.) After being introduced to the pilot in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Marvel is set to begin publication on a new ongoing series launching in April.

635883794466286374-PoeSketchesDameron’s comic book debut will take place in Star Wars: Poe Dameron #1. Neither comic book creator is a stranger to the Marvel Star Wars books as each has worked on a mini previous. Soule has wrote the Star Wars: Lando mini followed by Star Wars: Obi-Wan & Anakin. Noto previously worked on Star Wars: Chewbacca before making the transition to the Dameron title.

USA Today announced the news and told the story of the second ongoing set in the gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. In the story, Soule told the outlet that he wanted to examine more Dameron’s personality and go to new locations with the character and possibly old ones from other six films.

Soule added some insightful context that will likely inform his take on the character; “It’s not as instinctive in some ways as writing a story about, say, Lando Calrissian was for me – I’ve been thinking about Lando Calrissian for 30 years, whereas Poe Dameron I’ve been thinking about for six months,” said Soule.

Informing this comic is the The Journey to the Force Awakens – Shattered Empire story that told the backstory on the Dameron legacy. Marvel looks to be continuing in that same direction with the new story.

Noto explained the visual process behind his thinking; “Seeing so much of him on screen, it’s easier in a way to act that part out in my head while I’m drawing: How would Oscar Isaac act in this situation as Poe Dameron?”

Star Wars: Poe Dameron #1 hits store shelves this April.
