Dark Horse Comics has announced a new, direct-to-consumer website for collectibles. Dark Horse Direct will offer exclusive, limited edition items from creator-owned and licensed properties. The website’s initial offerings include two Game of Thrones-themed items – a Tormund Giantsbane figure and an 18” replica Iron Throne – as well as a maquette of Spaceboy from Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s The Umbrella Academy. The site is currently live, with a couple of items already available for pre-order. A limited number of the Tormund Giantsbane figure will also be available for purchase at San Diego Comic-Con.
This is an interesting move further into the collectibles market for Dark Horse. They’ve been producing Game of Thrones figures for years, so an exclusive figure that’s part of an already established line, and that’s only slightly more expensive than the standard figures, is a smart play. But it’s clear that the target audience for this website is those collectors who are willing to spend a little more for their display pieces – the Iron Throne replica retails for $499.99, while the Spaceboy maquette is priced at $299.99. Considering that a smaller, 7” Iron Throne replica retailed for only $59.99, it’ll be interesting to see the difference in quality between the regular retail items and the exclusives available through the site.
