The X-Men will be making an appearance on Fox this fall with the new series The Gifted – a one hour drama by Matt Nix starring Stephen Moyer and Amy Acker as the Struckers, parents of mutant children who have to take their family on the run to protect it. Though the show will be set in a distinct and separate timeline from the movies, it will still inhabit the X-Men universe and features characters like Blink (Jamie Chung), Polaris (Emma Dumont), and Thunderbird (Blair Redford).
Moyer told press at San Diego Comic Con that his wife, Anna Paquin, who played Rogue on the big screen, helped him prepare for the part:
Anna has done four of these movies, and so she knows the world backwards. She’s worked with Bryan [Singer, director of X-Men and The Gifted’s pilot] on three of those occasions, so she knows Bryan extremely well, and so she’s a big fan of everything he brings to the table. She’s a big believer in doing a bunch of research. She showed me a few places she had gotten information from – not just comics, but also on the internet. As an actor, the internet is am amazing resource. We get to be able to go down the rabbit hole when it comes to research. And Marvel made comic books available to us through Marvel Unlimited, which was wonderful.
Amy Acker, who fans my recognize from as Fred from Angel, said her research focused on the civil rights issues the series examines. “Websites with advice for coming out to your parents, or for parents, how they should respond,” she said. “For me, that’s an interesting part of this show and our parts: that we’ve always known this is there, and what happens when the guilt of ‘Maybe we should have been doing more all along.’”
Coby Bell, who will play Agent Jace Turner, a man wrestling with the moral ambiguity of his job requirements, joked that his preparation was a little different: “I was just told to do sit-ups!”
The Gifted will premiere on Monday, October 2nd at 9 P.M.
I find it annoying that Acker plays just the boring brave mom to be honest. She barely gets to talk because of it. Why she can’t play a mutant? She’s a talented gorgeous woman who always brings depth into her characters she was born to play action heroes.
Is it because of her age? News flash: she doesn’t look her age. And even if she did – what, no woman in her age can play a mutant? marvel/fox ageism is astounding.
Yeah if we’ll lucky this show will last for a season only and after this Amy will get really good role she deserves and not some suburban mum without powers.
