A recent EW package on MAN OF STEEL includes comments from WB studio head Jeff Robinov that suggest a wider direction for DC-based movies in the wake of the next Superman film:

It’s setting the tone for what the movies are going to be like going forward. In that, it’s definitely a first step.”
Will Man of Steel include references to other DC heroes headed to the big screen, as Marvel did with its pre-Avengers series of flicks?

“I think you’ll see that, going forward, anything can live in this world,” he said. “[Nolan’s] Batman was deliberately and smartly positioned as a stand-alone. The world they lived in was very isolated without any knowledge of any other superheroes. What Zack and Chris have done with this film is allow you to really introduce other characters into the same world.”

We may not have to wait very long for more news. “We’ll announce something in the next several weeks that will hopefully position the DC characters and the movies we’re going to be making,” Robinov said.

So yeah, if Marvel could so it, so can WB. Robinov debunks the oft-spread rumor that Christopher Nolan will make the Justice League movie with Christian Bale, but hints obliquely that future Batman movies will tie in to the DCU-Movie mythos.

But yeah, it’s all still oblique and enigmatic—until that next announcement.

Meanwhile, speaking of MAN OF STEEL, this freaky viral video starring Michael Shannon as General Zod has been released:

And there are games afoot which lead you to things like this iwillfindhim.com site and the DSRW Project. You’ll need to learn Kryptonian to play along, but it all speaks to a way more lively and current campaign for MAN OF STEEL than the reverent retro SUPERMAN RETURNS.

  1. Zod coming to Earth looking for Kal-El, and if he doesn’t surrender then Earth will suffer, sounds like the plot of Straczynski’s “Superman: Earth-One”.

  2. So “setting the tone for what the movies are going to be like going forward” include poorly-rendered ‘homages’ to Alien and The Matrix?
