Report: Jake Gyllenhaal looking to add some magic to the MCU as Mysterio

For those of you who took a look at my recent ranking of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you’ll note that my stance on Spider-Man: Homecoming softened considerably. So much so, that it cracked the top 10. And honestly, when I think about it, the Guardians Vol 2 to Homecoming to Ragnarok to Black Panther to Infinity War streak of films is as strong as any blockbuster output that I can recall from a studio…heck, the entirety of Phase 3 is pretty darn great, when you consider my affinity for Civil War, and Doctor Strange is pretty solid as origin flicks go.

Anyhow, the point being, I was wrong…Spider-Man: Homecoming is great, and all it took was a viewing at home outside of a somewhat grumpy/uncomfortable theatrical experience for its respective charms to shine through.

And suddenly, I’m really excited about this sequel, and it looks like we’ve got a villain on tap as THR is reporting that Jake Gyllenhaal, a fellow who has a deep history with the genre without ever actually starring in one, is in talks to join whatever “Spider-Man: Homecoming 2” will be called as Quentin Beck aka Mysterio aka Kyle’s favorite Spider-Man villain of all time.

This wouldn’t even be Gyllenhaal’s first foray with Spider-Man, as he was set to replace Tobey Maguire in the Spider-Man 2 days, back when Maguire was dealing with recovery from a back injury. Of course, that didn’t come to pass. Gyllenhaal has subsequently been up for Batman twice (once just ahead of Batman Begins, and then as a part of the search to potentially replace Ben Affleck for the Matt Reeves project, so go rumors anyway), and he was also offered the role of Rick Flag in Suicide Squad after Tom Hardy had to step away from the role.

It’s really only been a matter of time, it just looks like Marvel is the studio that finally got him. The only other things we know about this sequel is that it’ll take place the year after Homecoming, and has several European filming locations.

I like how these Spider-Man movies, Green Goblin aside, have yet to repeat a villain. Just goes to show how deep a bench that Spidey rogues gallery is, even if their big screen execution is a bit all over the place (the less said about Electro, the better).
