If you weren’t one of the lucky ones who were able to see The Death of Superman premiere at SDCC (read The Beat’s review here) then you hopefully watched it now that it’s available on on digital.

This week Warner Bros. Animation released a sneak peek of the movie sequel, Reign of the Superman based on the infamous 90’s comic storyline that introduced four substitute Supermen claiming to be the Man of Steel—Steel, Cyborg Superman, Superboy, and Eradicator.

Some may recall that Warner Bros. Animation produced an adaptation of the “The Death of Superman” storyline entitled Superman: Doomsday over a decade ago that had to trim the dense story due to time constraints. This time around, the filmmakers can fully delve into the “Reign of the Supermen” and play around with the substitute Supermen.

While famed Superman writer Peter Tomasi worked on the script for Death, it appears veteran animation writers Jim Krieg and Tim Sheridan are helming the script for Reign and they have some fun takes on the new characters. “Superboy is Superman if he had been raised by the Kardashians,” says Krieg. “Death of Superman is about how we destroy our heroes and Reign of the Supermen is about how we make them,” says Sheridan. ”

Director Sam Liu also returns. Stay tuned for more details including a release date in the months to come.

  1. really wish marvel would take a cue from dc and produce animated films that cover classic comic book storylines. the kree-skrull war, streets of poison (cap story line), the coming of galactus, the beta ray bill story, the Elektra saga, armor wars, infinity gauntlet (comic book version), the sinister six (original story), the list can go on and on. true, marvel did a couple (planet hulk comes to mind), but a whole library of classic marvel stories as animated films would be great. guess I shouldn’t hold my breath waiting for this to happen.
