The Golden Globes nominations were announced this morning, and comics turned up in two categories. RED, based on the Warren Ellis/Cully Hamner comic, was tagged in the Picture, Musical or Comedy category and The Walking Dead got a nom for Best Series, Drama.

The Globes are a bit of a joke around Hollywood — see Nikki Finke’s entirely accurate report — but it’s always nice to see comics-themed material getting recognition.

RED joins ALICE IN WONDERLAND, BURLESQUE, THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT, and THE TOURIST in the category. (THE TOURIST a comedy? Okay.) The Walking Dead is up against Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, and The Good Wife.

Best Animated Film nominees include TOY STORY 3, THE ILLUSIONIST, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, DESPICABLE ME, and TANGLED.

In other semi-comics related noms, The Big Bang Theory got one for a Best Series, Comedy pick. Occasional comics author Thomas Jane was nominated for Best Actor, Comedy or Musical for HUNG.

  1. Have to say that I’m a bit surprised that there was no love for “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” at all, especially in what looks like a weak “Comedy” field as compared to the “Drama” category.

I would have also thought at least the original songs would have gotten a nod (particularly Metric’s “Black Sheep”). Bummer.

Yay on the nod for “The Walking Dead”

Ricky Gervais is hosting again so that equals an automatic watch for me.
