Quote of the day: Gerhard

“I remember saying to Dave at this point, “I’m drawing individual bricks. What I have to draw is a wall.” Learn how to draw a wall instead of a bunch of bricks.”

— Cerebus backgorund artist Gerhard, interviewed by Sean Michael Robinson at TCJ. Much more crafty talk in the link.

  1. I love reading this art tech stuff. I have done a lot of cartooning and illustration for newsprint, and experimentation was valuable for seeing what would work and what wouldn’t.

  2. That’s a piece of advice that works for just about anything.

    In a good way!

  3. So true. I get students all the time who have this strategy for making “wall” that then starts to take on a life of its own.
