Rough Riders Vol. 1

Collecting the first seven issues of the epic AfterShock series! At the cusp of the 1898 World’s Fair, America is poised to become Earth’s most industrious nation. When a terrible power emerges from the darkness, a group of unlikely heroes team-up to stop it. A tortured Teddy Roosevelt recruits a struggling Coney Island magician named Harry Houdini…a hard-drinking, gun-slinging Annie Oakley; a financially strapped and aging Thomas Edison; and a boisterous, womanizing African American boxer with a big chip on his shoulder named Jack Johnson. These legends of old will soon wage a shadow war that will change the course of history for America, and ultimately, the world. That is, of course, if they don’t kill one another first.
Don’t miss out on this first collection from ADAM GLASS (executive producer of Supernatural & writer of Suicide Squad) and PAT OLLIFFE (Untold Tales of Spider-Man).

  1. Preorders for those who baited books at $10 and shipped them at $15 and $18?

BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA (wipes tears) HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA (breathe) HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA, HA HA HA, HA HA, kthxbye.

  2. i was really behind AfterShock at first as their line was varied and interesting (although i was leery about their long term viability…with a creative lineup like that there was clearly investors at work behind the scenes. would they bail if things didnt go how they wanted?)

so its been sad to see
-AMERICAN MONSTER ship like 3 issues in 6 months
-the art on STRAYER completely fall apart to barely sketches while the coloring is carrying the book
-SECOND SIGHT seemingly just end abruprtly with little wrap up

i don’t really have faith in trying more of their titles at this point, i want to, but i can only budget so much for things that may not pay off or fall apart

  3. Simon Says, I’m sorry you feel like AfterShock tired to “bait” or “pull a fast one” over on retailers/fans in regards to our initial solicitations on the Replica and SuperZero TP offerings. It was never our intent to do so, regardless of how you may feel. We initially were considering doing the $9.99 price point for the first volume of our trades, but quickly realized that by doing so would create a “wait for the trade” audience as we would be discounting Replica as a $10 discount from buying the 5 initial issues and SuperZero would be a $14 savings on buying the individual issues. That type of discount would only assure that fans would not buy the initial issues and would wait for the trade. If they did that, they we wouldn’t have enough sales to justify doing the trades in the first place, so it would be recipe for disaster. Even with adjust prices, we were still offering Replica Vol 1 TP at a $5 savings from the individuals titles and SuperZero Vol 1 TP at a $6 savings. Before making the decision to adjust our price point, we checked with Diamond to try to change the prices before they went to print, but it was too late, so Diamond assured me that they could alert retailers to the price change which in time to allow them to adjust their orders as desired. After receiving this assurance, we moved forward with that option. All our titles since that first initial offerings have been listed at the correct price. We’re sorry you have such a hatred for AfterShock and have accused us of purposely misleading retailers/fans for profit. That was not our intent and will never be our intent. It was an one-time mistake and I can assure you it will never happen again.

For your previous claim that retailer were never notified. Here is correspondence from our Diamond rep to show that this was not the case. We were not the only company on this list to alter prices from the original copy sent in, but I’ve removed their names and product as I don’t believe it proper for me to point out specifics.

Checked the archives and the price changes were in our weekly Product updates.

It also updates on retailer services site so they would see the new pricing when ordering online –

  4. joe.distory, I’m sorry you no longer feel you can justify buying future AfterShock titles. American Monster’s schedule has been problematic, and we have been working closely with Brian Azzarello to correct that going forward. No one wants to see more issues of American Monster than we do. We love the series and we love Brian. Our goal is that by issue #6 the series will be back on a regular schedule. It might be a bi-monthly schedule, but a schedule none-the-less.

As for Strayer and Second Sight, all publishers have to make the tough decision of ending or continuing a series. For every series that we publish, we guarantee a first arc of either 5 or 6 issues. At that point, several factors help to decide if the series will continue from that point forward, with sales being a large component. If enough retailers/fans aren’t buying the series, then it’s difficult to continue it. We’d love for all our titles to ongoing series, but that won’t always, unfortunately, be the case. Only you guys can decide if a series last or not.
