This past Thursday, The Game Awards 2018 had its usual country buffet of world premieres from established properties such as Fortnite as well as brand new games coming soon. Perhaps the announcement most exciting coming out of the show was the reunion of  Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky. Creators of the original Fallout game.

Combined with the team from Obsidian (Fallout: New Vegas) and published by a division of Take Two Interactive known as Private Division, the pair announced their new space survival RPG, The Outer Worlds.

In The Outer Worlds, you awake from hibernation on a colonist ship lost in transit to its destination on the edge of the galaxy, only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the colony. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.

From looking at the game’s announcement trailer, the creative team is approaching this overflowing shot glass of a sci-fi genre from fresh eyes. Nearly every button pressed triggered a malfunction versus some sort of smooth cogsworth that makes life easier. This isn’t simply another future utopia. The idea of colonizing a new region of space would undoubtedly have catastrophic issues to deal with and The Outer Limits is going to tackle everything we can think of.  It’s the perfect setting for Tim & Leonard’s blending of moments of levity against a backdrop of never-ending corporate despair.

If you were one of those people who believe Fallout: New Vegas was as good as Fallout is ever going to get then The Outer Worlds is the game we’re all waiting for.

The Outer Worlds will be launching in the 2019 calendar year for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
