by Xavier Lancel

[Editor’s note: we’ve fallen a bit behind with the sales charts but will be catchin up in the next few weeks for this crucial period for comics sales. Hang in there!]

Welcome to a new analysis of the Marvel sales. Reminder: I’m French, that’s why I’m talking funny. Please address your complaints to my “Joshua Dysart had to travel to France to have someone make him sign a copy of the incredible Captain Gravity & the Power of Vril” country. For any information about the French magazine on US comics I’m editing -next issue will have a big Carl Potts interview!-, please send me a message using my e-mail address from any of my own commentaries

First, sorry for the delay. I was late. Then had to go back to the preparation of my trial against my former boss, then got ill, then drown under all my missed deadlines. Not that I miss anything. Expensive team-ups beetween classic characters and their modern second version, and covers everywhere with characters with fangs and claws, in dark tones. Thank you Venom, main theme of the September variant cover program.

Many series which were dying slowly at the bottom of the TOP 300 saw their last issues printed this summer, making room for an horde of new titles already knocking at the door of the Atrocious Low Sales Department. With the departure of Brian Michael Bendis to DC, there is now indeed room for a new voice to mold the Marvel Universe into a new twist. Among the devastated groups of titles: the Avengers and Inhumans ones. The X-Men relaunch seems to work, as long as it does not count on anything other than pure X-Men teams. How many different adjectives and colors will Marvel be able to publish at the same time under the X-Men brand? We’ll see. Remember the Avengers: there used to be almost 10 different Avengers books at one time. They can do it again. What are you saying? “Lessons from the past?” Who do you think you are? “A reader?!” Just stick to the buying part and smile to the silly images on the covers. Collect them all, it’s funny!

Reminder: those sales are estimates, sales to comics shops situed in North America. American comics do get sold somewhere else in their original floppy edition. Keep also in mind that it’s not because a copy is sold to a shop that it’s sold to a customer. This would be way too easy. Digital sales are not taken into account.

Many thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. Also thanks to the Comics Zone shop in Lyon (my city in France!) for its help.

1- MARVEL LEGACY LTD ($6)
09/17 Marvel Legacy #1 - 298,242

Impressive debut numbers, especially with a $6 price tag! We all know it’s gonna fall back toward something more realistic with issue #2. That would be $2 millions in sales if all the issues would find a customer, which is highly unlikely. The good news? You’ll be able to find copies of this #1 issue in the $1 dollar bin everywhere pretty soon!

Ouch! Just the standart comic, with no gimmick. Here is the problem. Marvel has put so much of his efforts on gimmicks and not on faithfull readers that now, if they use gimmicks to sell their products, they lose a lot of money. So they do even more gimmicks. And dig the difference in sales beetween a gimmickless standart comic and a gimmicked one even more. Perhaps they shouldn’t have started to play this dangerous game at all? There is ALWAYS a price to play.—

  1. I thought Marvel Legacy #1 was a one-shot? But this analysis seems to claim there will be a #2… Did I miss an announcement?

  2. Great to have you back, Xavier! Three quick questions:

    1) See above. (I couldn’t tell if that was just an instance of your humor…)

    2) Which issue of Royals has an homage cover to which issue of Power Pack? (Looking at both Royals #6 and #7, I don’t see any similarity to PP #24… but I may simply be a dope!)

    3) You mentioned that ACO is back at DC. Awesome! What title? (I can’t find any work credited to him — for any publisher — since his sensational run on Nick Fury came to a close.)

  3. Definitely welcome back! I look forward to seeing the charts for the renumbering months and the charts for this month when they decided to whack so many titles.

  4. Yes, Legacy was a one shot. Is it greater if I say this was humor? :p

The Sanford Greene variant is for Royals 8.

Concerning Aco: he did some art for The Shadow-Batman mini-serie.

Great ot be back, the next column, already waiting to be published, is more current with all the cancellations.

  5. And Moon Girl is kind on an all-age book. Back in the day, those were selling around 5-6K so that’s not bad at all. and remember it has been picked to be available in many schools libray trought Scholastic. That’s huge!

  6. “Then had to go back to the preparation of my trial against my former boss …”

That sounds more interesting that Marvel’s comic books!

  7. George: you are absolutly right. I don’t know how it works in the US but here, if you never had to go in court against you boss for your basic work rights…well, that’s quite an experience!
So far, it has been more than 4 years. It should take at least 2 years more. and I’m not counting the time to regain the money they own me. The law says something but it’s not applied…for no reason. I already should have received 1/3 of what they own me..the court said so…but.it has been 4 months and….nada!
Basically, everybody spends his time giving a long-term court reunion date…then they decide to report to another long-term date and again…and again… You don’t open your mouth during the trial you waited years to arrive, only each lawyer from each party talk, one after the other, and that’s it.
And the decisions are not based on the half a meter pile of pieces you provided, but on one line here or there, because nobody is gonna read the thing. It’s like another planet where logic has no meaning. Frankly, I wouldn’t be so calm and determined,… It makes you understand how some people in those situations can really burn out, freak out and do something stupid (give up or attack physically their former boss). This is just INSANE.

  8. Finally maybe people will accept that Captain Marvel DOES NOT Sell the only reason keeps going is due to movie in the works. Once movie comes out and if doesn’t help comic sales will be added to the canceled pile that marvel announced recently

  9. “Finally maybe people will accept that Captain Marvel DOES NOT Sell the only reason keeps going is due to movie in the works. Once movie comes out and if doesn’t help comic sales will be added to the canceled pile that marvel announced recently”

And if does finally gets cancelled then there will be a very vocal outcry from such a very small minority group online and they will scream that Marvel is being sexist.

  10. Great commentary Xavier! You had me laughing a few times.

It looks like even regular trade buyers will sample a series and never come back for Volume 2 because many of the series are just not that good.

A shame the actual Venom monthly isn’t doing better. Its such a fun series. All those people buying the silly variants need to support it

  11. Carol lost a lot of fans when they made her a fascist in cw1 and while DeConick was able to bring a few back she also completely ignored Carol’s actions, changing the costume and name in I think the hopes that people would forget that this was a character who beat up a woman in front of that woman’s daughter. Then marvel made Carol a fascist again for cw2. I think until the memories of those two events fade a bit more marvel will have very little chance of increasing her popularity, movie or no movie.

  12. “Then marvel made Carol a fascist again for cw2. I think until the memories of those two events fade a bit more marvel will have very little chance of increasing her popularity, movie or no movie.”

I blame the fugly haircut, the so-so (at best) new costume, the pedestrian writing and the mediocre artwork for the low sales on Captain Marvel.

  13. “And if does finally gets cancelled then there will be a very vocal outcry from such a very small minority group online and they will scream that Marvel is being sexist.”

No, they won’t. I wonder if you can post about comics without inserting this bizarre agenda of yours.

  14. “No, they won’t. I wonder if you can post about comics without inserting this bizarre agenda of yours.”

Bizarre reply. There will be exactly such an outcry by exactly such people.

  15. Xavier, what do you mean by “back in the day” for Marvel’s kids comics?

Do you mean the “Star Comics” imprint of the mid-1980s when Marvel was putting out licensed property kid comics like Madballs, A.L.F., Heathcliff, and The Spectacular Spider-Ham?

Because those kids comics sold much, much, much higher than Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur do. Like, 40,000-70,000 units higher.

  16. No, I mean the Adventures line. Spider-Man Adventures, FF Adventures, Marvel Super-Heroes Adventures, Hulk adventures… from 2005-2014 roughtly

  17. I’m a huge Carol Danvers fan, but I’ve mainly been just buying her recent series out of loyalty to the character and in hopes that her stories will improve. It’s been a really long time since there was a Carol Danvers book with art/writing/story that appealed to me. I do think that if a top notch Captain Marvel book came out, it would sell.

  18. I am really sorry that Gwenpool was cancelled. That was the only Marvel title coming out currently that I was really enjoying. I hope her character resurfaces somewhere soon, hopefully with the same fun and irreverent approach.

  19. Loved the writing on Gwenpool, hated the art. Any relaunch definitely needs an artist known for drawing hot women on it.

  20. I used to be a Carol Danvers fan and I used to be a marvel fan. Those days are gone. Many times during cw1 and cw2 I found myself wishing Rogue had just killed her off when she attempted to murder Carol the first time. They can redo the name and the costume all they want: Carol was still the fascist of those two events and until they deal with that I’m not going to read her, certainly not when they push her as their version of Wonder Woman. It’s not just her though, I’m pretty much done with the major characters as they’ve all been shown to have no idea what honor, loyalty and friendship are. Everyone of them has betrayed close friends and been forgiven with an ease that destroys characters for me.
