julymarvelsalesWelcome to a new analysis of the Marvel sales. Reminder: I’m French, so that’s why I’m talking funny. Please address your complaints to my « $5 for a coffee?! That’s the price of a meal in Prague! » country.

Civil War II is here and is invading more than half of Marvel titles. You can’t escape it! While some of the title launches focusing on individual characters launches have worked quite nicely (DD, Punisher, Moon Knight, Dr Strange, Black Panther), other books have seen brighter days. Iron Man doesn’t seem able to sustain two ongoing series, the Inhumans line is still pretty weak, the Guardians one is a cemetery, and proposing more than one series on Squadron Supreme characters proved to be a disaster sales-wise.

Ongoings featuring female characters leads are struggling (aside from Thor, which is still doing strongly). There is huge competition among them as customers are probably not rich enough to try all of them.

Inhumans and X-Men lines are gonna be remodeled soon. After that, whose turn will it be? Marvel can be happy– its readers seem to have no opposition to spending 10$ per month to only follow the core Civil War event series. I can’t imagine how much money you’d need to spend if you really want to understand everything that’s going on…

Reminder: those sales are estimates, sales to comics shops situed in North America. American comics do get sold somewhere else in their original floppy edition. Keep also in mind that it’s not because a copy is sold to a shop that it’s sold to a customer. This would be way too easy. Digital sales are not taken into account.

Many thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. Also thanks to the Comics Zone shop in Lyon (my city in France!) for its help.

This is the new goldmine. It keeps selling in its second month out.

Why the jump for issue#3 you ask ? Well, a « major » character death happened in it and, apparently, retailers reacted strongly to it. Old tricks still do the trick, it seems. From what I have seen of this death, it doesn’t make any sense and seems to have been done mostly for shock value. Oh, please, don’t be shocked by this painful revelation! :p

An amazing launch, with issues #1 and #2 reorders and a very small loss of readers so far. Expect a second ongoing series pretty soon, à la Doctor Strange. A major success.

That’s not a very enthusiastic reaction to this one turning into an ongoing, despite many variant covers. Perhaps Marvel has reached its limit on Deadpool. Issue #2 sales level will provide answers soon.

54- CIVIL WAR II KINGPIN LTD ($5)

07/16 CV II Kingpin Ltd #1 - 48,289

It seems that the big debate around Civil War II is this: should we stop people before they do something bad if we think they will commit the crime? I’m not sure I’m comfortable with a mainstream superhero comic playing with this kind of fascistic idea, especially in the current situation we find ourselves in. This is especially the case given a lot of comics readers are not accepting of diversity, be it cultural or physical.

The sollicitation text says that’s « one of the most important Civil War tie-in stories ». Yeah, right…This result in the lowest sales for the title so far. I’m not sure the people reading Ms Marvel in floppy format are really interested in big crossovers…

83- CIVIL WAR II GODS OF WAR LTD

The ploy worked and sales are still way above the ones of the late Hercules series.

Despite one of the sexiest Iron Man covers ever (courtesy of Alex Maleev), you can only be disappointed with the sales level of this one, especially with such big names attached to it.

Issue #9 has one of the nicest cover ass-shot of Hulk ever, courtesy of Terry Dodson. Despite that, the title huge connection to Civil War II didn’t spark buyers interest.

Taking the same creative team and putting it on a character with less continuity struggles and history than Daredevil could have attracted more readers, even if it was a risky move. So far, the gamble doesn’t seem to have worked, even if we are still probably way above where any standard Black Widow ongoing series would normally be at this point.

I have actually read the first three issues of this one thanks to the cheap Timely Comics collection and it’s not that bad. I wouldn’t spend $4 a month for it but it was fun. I will not name names but there were many other new series which I read the first issues of thanks to Timely Comics. These other series sold way more copies than Drax, but they were almost painful to read.

  1. “[EMPRESS] Either a special deal was made on the first three issues or issue #4 shipped late in the month.”

Special deal (free overship, I think). Check the retail ranks for #2 and #3 on these charts, compared to other Marvel comics of the same price with similar quantity ranks:
    http://www.diamondcomics.com/Home/1/1/3/597?articleID=179997
    http://www.diamondcomics.com/Home/1/1/3/597?articleID=181132

EMPRESS comes in about 40 ranks higher on the quantity side than it should, if you adjust for that you have a pretty normal curve for a Marvel series.

  2. When u have a comic as good as Thunderbolts u need to really get it in as many hands as possible. basically a 21st century Sandman.

  3. I have been enjoying Web Warriors for the multiverse of Spider “people” and all the villain variations. I haven’t bothered with Civil War but am tiring of the storyline crossing over to many titles, and making them terrible

  4. I’m wondering if the art change on Thunderbolts will be a case of too-little, too-late. I’ll be surprised if it makes it to 12.

  5. Issue “#200” of Silver Surfer was #6, not #5.

Also, there won’t be three Thor-related ongoings at once : Unworthy (with the Odinson) is a mini, and Vote Loki will be over before that even starts (it’s only four issues).

  6. Sad to see the numbers for Black Widow. That creative team is really doing some great stuff on that book!

Gwen-Pool is selling better than New Avengers. Let THAT one sink in for you…. ugh.

“To have a new artist for each issue is a nice original approach, with each time a different setting and a personal vision of the Scarlet Witch.” – That might be the case, but that’s also the exact reason I dropped the book after the first issue. I’d like some stability in my titles, creative team wise.

  7. Everything is selling better than New Avengers those days. :-P.
Well, its stability if it is scheduled that way from the start ! :-) i think it was a nice touch, reflecting the fact that the character has such a convulated history, no one really know anymore who she is or what are her powers.

  8. is there a reason why the numbers of the previous punisher or black widow series are not included in the comparison charts but other series are?

  9. You said in your Kingpin notes that you don’t think comic fans are welcoming of diversity. I don’t think that’s true at all, I think comic fans have always been progressive on diversity and welcoming of diverse characters. What comic fans tend to object to is when diversity is injected as part of the process of shoving existing “not diverse enough” characters out of the way. People like those characters, and resent any effort to uproot them, so when the impetus behind that effort seems to be to “increase diversity,” they do not react favorably.

To a lesser extent there is also some resentment when a “diversity move” like adding a gay/trans character or replacing a character with a minority character, it gets way more news coverage than other comic stories, more than the move really deserves if you consider that it’s rarely the first time it’s actually happened in the comics.

  10. @Xavier

The reason why I bring this up is because it at least helps put the numbers in a better context. Maybe you consider Black Widow by Waid and Samnee to not be doing very well, but what if it’s selling better than the previous Black Widow run by Edmondson and Notto, or it could be dropping readers faster than the previous series did.

Looking forward to the next set of numbers.
