Death of Wolverine #4.jpg

By Jason Enright

Hello Sales Chart Analyzers! In October, there were a lot of books. So to start, let’s break down the numbers a bit.

84 books in total
8 double shipped books (plus 3 series that shipped more than twice this month)
5 X-Men books (7 if you count X-Factor and X-Force)
5 Avengers books (6 if you count the Ultimates)
2 Annuals
1 Original Sin Tie-In book
10 Axis and Axis Tie-in Books
7 Death of Wolverine and Death of Wolverine Tie-in books

5 titles over 100,000 copies
3 titles between 75,000 and 100,000 copies
11 titles between 50,000 and 75,000 copies
37 titles between 25,000 and 50,000 copies
28 titles under 25,000
1 $5.99 book
10 $4.99 books
69 $3.99 books
1 $3.50 book
3 $2.99 books

An interesting trend to look at this month is how variant numbers affect the sales. Several titles benefitted from being included in one or more of Marvel’s themed variant programs this month. In October, Marvel had 3 variant themes, the Anti-Bullying variants, Deadpool 75th anniversary variants and Hasbro toy variants. Many of these issues were in the middle of an arc and normally would have suffered standard attrition of -1 to -3%, but due to these variant programs they got a nice +3 to +5% sales boost. Variants are one of many incentive programs that companies use to boost sales. Recently Marvel and DC have been doing these themed variants across multiple books and they definitely seem to be working. Whether or not, they are actually good for comic sales in the long term is another question entirely. What do you think of variants? Let’s discuss it in the comments below. For now let’s dive into the numbers.

Thanks as always to ICV2.com and Milton Griepp for their permission to use these figures.

Death of Wolverine ends very strong. The idea of killing main characters may be a gimmick but this event was well done. Now let’s start the timer for how long until he comes back, and further down the list we’ll take a look at some of the many Death of Wolverine tie-ins.

The new Thor get a huge issue 1 boost. The next few months will be very telling however. If it has a normal issue 2 drop, of 40 to 50% next month then it will still be selling around 90k copies which is a very nice improvement on the 35k to 40k that Thor had been selling. Recent Marvel relaunches have quickly fallen back to their previous numbers, so with Thor the question will be how long can hold it onto this sales boost.

04/08 Secret Invasion #1 – 250,213 (-41.2%)

05/14 Original Sin #1 – 147,045 ( -5.5%)
10/14 AXIS #1 – 138,966

I chose to list AXIS with Uncanny Avengers because it was originally conceived as just the next Uncanny Avengers story arc, but has grown into a line-wide event. I wanted the comparison to show how big of a sales boost it gets as an event. Nice big boost for Uncanny Avengers.

However, I also wanted to show a comparison to launches of other events from the last 8 years. This list is because people often talk of event fatigue. As you can see the events this year are definitely not selling as well as previously events. AXIS is marketed as Avengers & X-Men: AXIS for a reason. Marvel was hoping it would sell like AVX did. It is not doing that well. Perhaps that is due to event fatigue. Original Sin and Death of Wolverine just ended. Spider-Verse is happening at the same time. There are a lot of Marvel’s books competing with each other for customer’s money and AXIS’s sales seem to be suffering because of it.

Spider-Verse hasn’t officially started yet, but these two issues are Edge of Spider-verse titles which is basically the build up to Spider-verse proper. They also both had variant covers and both featured prominent guest stars (Ms. Marvel in #7 and Mayday Parker aka Spider-Girl in issue 8). All of this conspired to give these issues nice big boosts. It is going to be a good couple months for Spider-Man sales.

Captain America gets a really nice boost for the final issue of the current run which is also the issue that debuts the new Captain America. Next month we get to see if the new Captain America #1 can sell as well as the new Thor did this month.

15. DEATH OF WOLVERINE: LOGAN LEGACY
10/14 DoW: Logan Legacy #1 - 71,532

10/14 DoW: Logan Legacy #3 - 47,265 ( -3.9%)

The Logan Legacy is a 5 issue mini-series with different teams taking on different characters important to Logan’s life and changed by his death. Issue 1 seems to do very well and then issue 2 saw an expected drop, and issue 3 seems to have leveled out. Still as an extra book tying into the Death of Wolverine, this is doing quite well for them. It will be interesting though to see how much money they can squeeze out of Wolverine’s death and if these tie-in series can do a good job of setting up their new series Wolverines.

22. Guardians 3000
10/14 Guardians 3000 #1 - 58,574 (---)

Guardians 3000 starts at a very respectable number only a few thousand below the main Guardians book. However, the size of issue 2 and 3 drops is always a much stronger measure of interest in the series than a new issue 1. If issue 2 sells over 35k next month, then this book may be doing very well.

So even though issue 37 is down 9even with some variants), it is still higher than this series’ lowest point of 45k. This 8-month time jump hasn’t clearly hurt or helped the series, it is just staying close to 50k.

37, 45. Edge of Spider-Verse
09/14 Edge of Spider-Verse #1 - 59,237
09/14 Edge of Spider-Verse #2 - 54,415 (-8.1%)

10/14 Edge of Spider-Verse #4 - 48,877 (-5.1%)
10/14 Edge of Spider-Verse #5 - 52,596 ( 7.6%)

Edge of Spider-Verse was a very successful mini-series for Marvel. Several of these books have been announced for second prints while one of this series’ new characters, Spider-Gwen, is going to be getting her own series in 2015.

41. Original Sin Annual
10/14 Original Sin Annual #1 - 52,105 (---)

I don’t understand how an event mini-series that didn’t last a year can qualify for an overpriced annual but as long as stores continue to order 50k copies of it, then Marvel will continue to make it.

48. DEATH OF WOLVERINE: DEADPOOL & CAPTAIN AMERICA

A single issue Death of Wolverine tie-in starring Deadpool and Captain America priced at $4.99

50. BUCKY BARNES: WINTER SOLDIER
10/14 BB: Winter Solder #1 - 47,471

Commenting on issue 1s is tough. On the one hand this series sold better than all previous Winter Soldier series, but on the other recent series that debuted at this level have now dropped below 30k and are on their way to 20k. The next two months will be very telling. If issue 2 stays above 30k, then it will likely have healthy staying power. If it drops 40% to 28k, then it might be in trouble. Stay tuned.

Deadpool gets a nice little 7% boost this month as it ties into Axis and has a 75th anniversary variant cover. Deadpool continues to be a monetary powerhouse for Marvel.

56. DEATHLOK
10/14 Deathlok #1 - 43,991

Another issue 1 with promising numbers, but if Deathlok gets the normal 40% drop it will be at 26k. Next month, look to see if there are issue 1 re-orders and how big the drop will be. A few thousand re-orders and a 30% drop would put this in a healthy place.

Last month, New Avengers had a nice boost for the start of the Time Runs Out storyline, and now this month there is a slight drop but the numbers are still higher than before the story arc started so it is still a net positive. This issue did have one variant so that likely also contributed to keeping the sales higher.

61. DEADPOOL’S ART OF WAR
10/14 Deadpool’s Art of War #1 - 42,673

Another Deadpool mini-series set to make Marvel a lot of money.

10/14 Star Lord #4 – 37,123 ( 12.8%)

Star Lord #4 gets a nice sales bump and sells a little bit more than #2 did which is really good at a time when most new series see consistent month to month drops.

78. Thanos: A God Up There Listening

Original Sin and Death of Wolverine come to a close as Spider-Verse and Axis ramp up and lots of books benefit from tie-ins or special variant covers. So how do these things affect what you buy? Do events get you excited to try out new titles or are you suffering from event fatigue? Do you buy variants and if so what kind of variants do you like?

Until next month, keep reading comics!

  1. Both Inhuman and Moon Knight are very good. Sad to see people dropping off these. Maybe the TV tie-ins will help Inhuman. MK wasn’t even given a chance by people once Ellis/Shalvey left, but it’s been stellar!

So happy for Ms Marvel’s success. Such a fun book.

I like that you put AXIS under Uncanny Avengers, since it’s basically just a continuation of Remender’s story.

F4 is finally really getting good, but too many people dropped off it. Here’s to a good ‘getting the band back together’ storyline as its sendoff (for at least a year).

Black Widow, Loki and Magneto are all good, too. Lots of the solo titles are good fun with great artwork. The team books have too much artist rotation changes, despite me liking them. Allred on Silver Surfer is great.

Robinson really understands the Invaders, but I dont think there are many fans interested in this team; the team is breaking up with all the changes, anyway.

Pak really gets Storm, too bad to see the numbers.

I must be one of the few online not liking Captain Marvel.

She-Hulk is one of their best books. Glad to see it got a good 12 issue run.

All in all, the state of Marvel is fine, IMO. They are putting out some good work on the solo titles with some very distinct artwork.

  2. @ Jason – what criteria are you using to say that Death of Wolverine was a well done event? The main book sold well, but it had, you know ,the death of Wolverine and Steve McNiven. Everything else has looked very thrown together (the tie in minis, the forthcoming “Wolverines” weekly series) or just bad (the Nightcrawler tie in issues are really, really bad).

  3. 1 $5.99 book ——— nerd tax (or what we’ll charge for Star Wars)
    10 $4.99 books ——- the next normal
    69 $3.99 books —— the new normal
    1 $3.50 book ———- the variant price
    3 $2.99 books ———umm, goodbye $3 comics

  4. @goggles You are totally right Logan Legacy is 7 not 5. Don’t know where I got 5 from. There are so many numbers in my head when writing this article. Sorry my bad.

@Zach Perhaps I termed that wrong about Death of Wolverine. I was not commenting at all on the quality of the series. When I say Death of Wolverine seemed gimmicky but was well done. I mean it was well-sold, well-promoted. I don’t know if Death of Wolverine was a good story or had good art or not, and for this article, that doesn’t matter. It is too “eye of the beholder” for this a numbers analysis article. I just can tell from talking stores, looking at how Marvel promoted it and what incentives they offered retailers, and the final numbers, that it sold very well and the event was well-handled in terms of sales and marketing. I’ll leave the quality question to you the commentators and to much more qualified comic reviewers and journalists. I am just here to talk numbers.

  5. Feels like I’m one of the few people still reading All-New Ultimates haha. Oh well, glad to be getting the full story.

  6. Spider-Man is my favourite Marvel comic, so I’m plowing ahead with Spiderverse at the moment – but most of the tie-ins I can leave, and I think it’s going to damage the launch of Spider-Woman in the long run.

AXIS is an interesting concept but a terrible story, and its dragging decent books like Magneto down with it. I can really ‘leave’ events to be honest, and I hope this downward trend will convince Marvel to give them a bit of a rest. They damage ongoings more than help them.

  7. I’m pleased to see that the word “hopefully” has been eliminated this month. Bravo!!

Point of order: I sincerely enjoy reading this column. At the same time, verbal tics can hamper that enjoyment, and there’s a prominent new offender in town: “nice” (especially in the context of a book getting a “nice sales boost”). Although it may seem tedious to list each and every instance of “nice” this month, I believe it’s necessary to illustrate just how much the word is used as a crutch:

“nice +3 to +5% sales boost”

    “very nice improvement”

    “nice big boost”

    “nice big boosts”

    “really nice boost”

    “nice sales boost”

    “nice sales boost”

    “nice boost”

    “nice boost”

    “nice little 7% boost”

    “nice boost”

    “nice boost”

    “nice sales bump”

    “nice boost”

    “nice boost”

    “nice sales boost”

    “nice to see”

    “nice little boost”

    “nice boost”

If *every* sales boost qualifies as a “nice” one, is there any point in using the word?
