Death has traditionally proven a lucrative tactic in comics publishing. The Death of Superman back in 1993 was one of the best selling comics of all time, and recent demises of Captain America, Spider-Man, Archie, Batman and others have given sales a spike. Marvel”s upcoming Civil War 2 event already killed off two major characters in a Free Comic Book Day preview.

In what is either a cynical ploy, or a realistic reaction to what sells,  Marvel has just announced am entire month given over to variant covers that allow you to fantasize over your favorite X-men kicking the bucket, leading up to a storyline called Death of X.   According to PR:

The end is near. There won’t be a dry eye in the house. Get a front row seat to the demise of the X-Men this July with these twenty Death of X Variants, available only at your local comic shop!

Here are the 20 titles which will feature Death of X variants:

  • All-New X-Men #11
  • All-New, All-Different Avengers #12
  • Amazing Spider-Man #15
  • Black Panther #4

Personally, that Colossus cover doesn’t really cut it for me. Just a grave? We need more suffering and grief!

  1. We’ll see. My money’s on some C-and-D list mutants biting it and Xavier’s dream being declared dead for the fifth or sixth time in the last eight years. Maybe they’ll get really edgy and Limbo demons will eat a bus full of M-Poxed mutant kids.
