Diamond has released their total year end charts showing the top 1000 comics and graphic novels and the top 100 in 0ther categories. This is in addition to the overall market information released earlier in the week. We’ve uploaded them here:
To answer the eternal question “What is indie vs small” — Indie is defined as a non premier publishers, so everything except Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, Image and IDW “Small” is a publishers outside Diamond’s top 10 over the last six months. This is why you’ll see Viz and Random House on the “small” list — they are small in the direct market, where single issues rule the dollar roost.
In these charts, the first column is sales rank, the second dollar rank and the third overall dollar rank, which is why it jumps around quite a bit.
Just in case you want to see it up front, here’s the breakdown of top 20 publishers showing where Archie, Fantagraphics and other well known but sub 1% publishers rank. Some, like Fanta, Random, Hachette and St. Martins are book specialists, hence not having the larger sales of periodicals.
In looking at the small and indie sales charts, Black Mask does a lot better than anyone would think, with Young Terrorists outselling even Attack on Titan in graphic novels. This is not what you would expect perhaps, but it’s my understanding that Black Mask has a very robust retailer outreach program and that has made the difference — along with some strong books, of course. Young Terrorists the comic had hip hop variant covers but that would not necessarily affect the trade. Definitely a matter to be investigated further.
UPDATE: It’s been pointed out to me that the Gn sales are for the larger Issue #1 of Young Terrorists to the hip hop covers would have been a factor here.
Lumberjanes Vol. 1 topped the indie graphic novel charts, with Vol. 2 at #4. A strong, strong title for Boom!.
These charts don’t have index numbers so its impossible to directly draw any sales figures from them. However I expect chart watchers like Milton Griepp and John Jackson Miller to have some estimates down the road so kee watching.
