Karl Kesel and Tom Grummett are bringing back Section Zero, a short-lived comic from the early 2000s that they’re billing as “Jack Kirby does The X-Files.

The book will return with Section Zero #1, due out in April from Image Comics. Writer Karl Kesel and artist Tom Grummett will both return to the characters and concepts that starred in three issues back in 2000. It will come out on Image’s Shadowline Comics imprint, launching with a story dubbed Part One: Ground Zero, which will introduce readers to the book’s central team. Variant covers for the book are forthcoming from a crop of classic comics artists, including Walt Simonson, George Perez, Adam Hughes, David Gibbons, Mike Wieringo, and more.

Here’s what the team had to say about the book’s return in the release:

Writer/inker Karl Kesel noted: “Ever since 2000, Tom and I have constantly tried to bring Section Zero back. Almost two decades later, we finally found a way to finish what we’d begun. The cherry on top is seeing the book return to where it all started—Image Comics.”

Grummett added: “Section Zero has excited me since day one. It’s exciting to see it return home to Image Comics, where it all began. Hang on to something! It’s going to be a wild ride!”

Section Zero was first published in 2000 by Gorilla Comics, an innovative for the time creator-owned comics platform that was to be financed by early versions of crowdfunding. The concept was first revived last year via a kickstarter.

The new announcement notes that the team in the book will be investigating secrets related to UFOs, monsters, lost civilizations, etc…but the first mystery this IP billed as Jack Kirby does The X-Files is likely to solve is whether comics fans are still game for trying out something that combines the sensibilities of one of their favorite things with one of their other favorite things (many signs point to yes).
