The Star Wars beat Walking Dead to top indie book this month, and there are a good amount of debuts this month, Image’s Sex Criminals and IDW’s Powerpuff Girls leading the way.

It’s a very strange month this month. With DC producing two versions of all of their Villains Month books, there are only 109 indie titles charting in the top 300, down on last month’s 153. Lots of titles missed the top 300 this month, but will no doubt return next month.

Despite that, they sold an estimated 1,521,695 comics, only 60,000 less than last month’s 1,581,067, on 44 titles less. This was mainly due to a lot of big new titles, seven of the top 14 titles are new entries, selling over 20,000 copies each. It also means that the average sales this month are 13,960, massively up from last month’s 10,333. If it hadn’t been for Villains month, it would have been a big month for indie.

UK and European sales from Diamond UK are not reported in this chart.

Out of the 109 books, 16 went up in sales and 72 went down, with the rest made up of one-shots and debuts.

Image are number one again with an 6.87% dollar share and a 7.00% market share, while IDW have a 4.89% dollar share and 4.12% market share, Dark Horse have a 4.76% dollar share and a 4.04% market share, Dynamite have a 2.27% dollar share and 2.19% market share and Boom! have a 1.83% dollar share and 1.65% market share.

Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates, and can be found here.

14. The Star Wars (Dark Horse)

09/2013: The Star Wars #1 - 78,467

An adaptation of George Lucas’ original treatment, it’s far more bombastic and has less of a sense of humour than the eventual film, but it’s interesting. Excellent sales too, the best for a Star Wars book in a good long while.

19. The Walking Dead (Image)

09/2008: The Walking Dead #52 - 23,627
09/2009: The Walking Dead #65 - 24,892

08/2013: The Walking Dead #113 - 70,273 (-3.7%)
09/2013: The Walking Dead #114 - 70,440 (+0.2%)

Totally stable this month, the calm before the storm. Records will be broken again next month, I suspect.

26. Saga (Image)

09/2012: -

====

10/2012: -
11/2012: Saga #7 - 46,971 (53,267)(+15.7%)

08/2013: Saga #13 - 55,372 (+3.8%)
09/2013: Saga #14 - 55,585 (+0.4%)

Truly remarkable. While only a modest increase, that now marks the sixth month in a row that sales have gone up. In fact, only 3 issues have failed to grow on the previous issue throughout the whole run so far.

45. Jupiter's Legacy (Image)

04/2013: Jupiter's Legacy #1 - 105,437
05/2013: -
06/2013: Jupiter's Legacy #2 - 48,217 (-54.3%)
07-08/2013: -
09/2013: Jupiter's Legacy #3 - 43,766 (-9.2%)

That’s flattening out at a decent level, and seems to be settling into a quarterly schedule.

50. Powerpuff Girls (IDW)

09/2013: Powerpuff Girls #1 - 38,992

A return for the nineties favourites, and I’m not at all surprised by the decent sales, it was always one of my favourite cartoons. How long till the inevitable Dexter’s Laboratory book?

54. Sex Criminals (Image)

09/2013: Sex Criminals #1 - 37,893

I’m delighted by the success of this wonderful book. I was well predisposed towards the book anyway, having been a huge fan of Chip Zdarsky’s for years, but it’s proved to be even better than I could have expected. What could have been a gimmick book is one of the warmest character pieces I’ve read since, well, Saga. This first issue’s gone to a third print now, too.

56. Star Wars (Dark Horse)

01/2013: Star Wars #1 - 39,663 (63,410)
02/2013: Star Wars #2 - 46,063 (+16.1%)
03/2013: Star Wars #3 - 45,522 (-1.2%)
04/2013: Star Wars #4 - 45,019 (-1.1%)
05/2013: Star Wars #5 - 44,310 (-1.6%)
06/2013: Star Wars #6 - 42,806 (-3.4%)
07/2013: Star Wars #7 - 41,611 (-2.8%)
08/2013: Star Wars #8 - 38,792 (-6.8%)
09/2013: Star Wars #9 - 37,502 (-3.3%)

Still dropping a little quickly, but it seems to be starting to settle down.

77. East of West (Image)

03/2013: East of West #1 - 49,518 (64,284)
04/2013: East of West #2 - 41,838 (-15.5%)
05/2013: -
06/2013: East of West #3 - 39,441 (-5.7%)
07/2013: East of West #4 - 43,228 (+9.6%)
08/2013: East of West #5 - 36,345 (-15.9%)
09/2013: East of West #6 - 33,381 (-8.2%)

Not really settling down, but sales are still more than healthy. Apparently the trade is selling gangbusters.

79, 274. My Little Pony (IDW)

11/2012: My Little Pony #1 - 80,128 (95,384)
12/2012: My Little Pony #2 - 39,841 (-50.3%)

06/2013: My Little Pony #8 - 33,114 (+2.9%)
06/2013: My Little Pony Color Me Treasury Ed - 4,810
07/2013: My Little Pony #9 - 35,153 (41,444) (+6.2%)
08/2013: My Little Pony #10 - 24,475 (31,860) (-30.4%)
08/2013: My Little Pony Cover Gallery #1 - 6,859
09/2013: My Little Pony #11 - 32,784 (+33.9%)

Looks like last month’s drop was a shipping glitch, with another 7,358 copies turning up, and sales returning to the low 30,000s.

110. Sons of Anarchy (Boom!)

09/2013: Sons of Anarchy #1 - 27,601

A good launch this, not the sort of license you’d expect to do so well, but there ya go. Breaking Bad anyone?

114. God is Dead (Avatar)

09/2013: God Is Dead #1 - 26,664

Jonathan Hickman’s first Avatar book, and their biggest hit in a while.

125. All New Executive Assistant Iris (Aspen)

09/2013: All New Executive Assistant Iris #1 - 25,415

This month’s Aspen dollar book, pretty much in line with most of the rest of them that aren’t called Fathom.

136. My Little Pony Micro Series (IDW)

02/2013: Twilight Sparkle #1 - 34,435
03/2013: Rainbow Dash #1 - 25,473 (-26.0%)

08/2013: Cutie Mark Crusaders #1 - 20,868 (-14.3%)
09/2013: Princess Celestia #1 - 22,656 (+7.9%)

I think this is the last of the spotlight books, with a new spin-off coming next month.

144. Rat Queens (Image)

09/2013: Rat Queens #1 - 21,745

A decent launch, but probably boosted by speculators. Expect a sizable drop next month.

151. Buffy TVS (Dark Horse)

09/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #28 - 52,303

Last issue and a bit of a break now before Season Ten.

07-08/2013: -

A slight drop, but still up on six months ago.

A very big jump, for no apparent reason that I can see, except maybe the current popularity of the timelord.

A totally average second-issue drop.

219. Cyber Force (Image)

09/2013: Cyber Force #6 - 11,843

The first five issues of this series were distributed for free, crowd-funded and with the retailers paying a minimal amount. I’m not sure whether 11,843 copies sold of the first full-price issue is a good result of this little experiment.

Larger drops than should be happening eight issues in, it really isn’t that far off the end of the last series’ sales now.

258. Mocking Dead (Dynamite)

09/2013: Mocking Dead #1 - 8,208

And another zombie book, slightly more tongue-in-cheek than most, and actually pretty good.

A ways to go till this one stabilizes.

265. Codename: Action (Dynamite)

09/2013: Codename: Action #1 - 7,752

A new Captain Action series, selling better than the old Moonstone series, but not that much more. I’m not sure if we’ll see it in the charts again, to be honest.

Another one likely to drop below the level of the previous series very soon. Might be an idea for IDW to give it a rest before the new film arrives.

291. Garth Ennis' Red Team (Dynamite)

02/2013: Garth Ennis Red Team #1 - 16,724

Not showing much sign of levelling out any time soon.

08/2013: Grimm #4 - 7,413 (-13.4%)
09/2013: Grimm #5 - 6,695 (-9.7%)

Dropping fast.

293. Brain Boy (Dark Horse)

09/2013: Brain Boy #1 - 6,639

Spinning out of Dark Horse Presents, I think there was a zero issue collecting those stories, but it didn’t chart.

294. GI Joe Cobra Files (IDW)

09/2012: Cobra #17 - 7,112

====

10/2012: Cobra #18 - 6,873 (-3.4%)

08/2013: Cobra Files #5 - 6,901 (-2.8%)

And another one about to drop below the cancelled previous series.

295. Hit List (Zenescope)

09/2013: Hit List #1 - 6,581

One of Zenescope’s rare non-GFT books, although with the obligatory scantily-clad women on the cover.

299. Mouse Guard (Archaia)

02/2013: Black Axe #6 - 7,052 (+1.5%)
06/2013: Legends of the Guard V2 #1 - 7,116 (+0.9%)
09/2013: Legends of the Guard V2 #1 - 6,464 (-9.2%)

Sliding as a comic, but this is one that does far better in its collected editions outside of the direct market.

300. Hoax Hunters (Image)

09/2012: Hoax Hunters #10 - 6,448

Film & TV rumors push this book back into the chart, its first appearance since issue three in July last year, which sold 4,404 copies.

======

All figures on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month.

I believe this has been cancelled with issue #9. A shame really.

  2. Yeah, I’m not sure why Valiant has had such a fall-off. I do find the occasional a bit thin story-wise given the price point but overall their universe feels so fresh and interesting. I wish more people were into it.

Glad to see Baltimore doing so well. That is one of DH’s best titles.

  3. Actually the #0 issue for Brain Boy is solicited for a Dec release after the rest of the mini finishes. No, I don’t know why DH did it that way either.

  4. “And another zombie book, slightly more tongue-in-cheek than most, and actually pretty good.”

    HAR! Whose tongue? Whose cheek?

Rat Queens was recommended by the clerk at Forbidden Planet. It’s a team of four female mercenaries, each with a different skill set and personality. I’ll wait for the trade.

  6. Valiant’s line is universally awesome, but I can’t move the singles at all. The trades, OTOH, do OK, but with such abysmal singles-single issue sales…

  7. The Valiant books move creative teams around so much, I think they’re competing for the Big Two’s switch-a-roo title! I finally gave up on almost all of them due to this. I mean, the great artist on Harbinger is now the regular artist on Archer & Armstrong? That makes no sense. Comic book companies really need to learn to keep their creative teams in place. Throw in a rotating fill-in artist to give the main guy a break, TRY to keep that rotating artist the same with each title, and be done with it.

  8. Is Zero going to have a different artist each issue? The first and second issue had very different art styles, though I liked them both.
