Walking Dead continues at the top, although it’s likely to get pushed down a little by the upcoming juggernaut of, um, My Little Pony. The usual suspects are joined this month by Grant Morrison’s Happy, and X)-Manowar and Spawn push back into the top part of the indie chart. However, things are not good further down the chart. There are a lot of longer-running titles, from the likes of Aspen, Top Cow and Dynamite amongst others, that seem to be selling fractions of what they once sold, and that maybe need to be retired in favour of new concepts. The retailers and more importantly customers seem to be voting with their dollars in that respect, and some dead horses are being hopelessly flogged towards the lower end of the chart.

141 indie books charted this month, up on last month’s 131. The bottom book sold 4,404, down on last month’s 5,376. They sold approximately 1,364,314, up on last month’s 1,198,391. Average sales are 9,675 per book, up on last month’s 9,148. UK and European sales from Diamond UK are not reported in this chart.

It really wasn’t a banner month for indie books this month. Out of the 141 books, only a paltry 11 went up in sales, and 115 went down, with the rest made up of one-shots and debuts.

IDW are the top indie publisher this month, with 6.36% dollar share and a 4.82 market share, Image have a 6.09% dollar share and 5.56% market share, Dark Horse have a 4.49% dollar share and a 3.69% market share, Dynamite have a 2.97% dollar share and an identical 2.97% market share and Boom! Have a 1.40% dollar share and 1.50% market share.

Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates, and can be found here.

Here’s this month’s top twenty indie graphic novels.

3. The Walking Dead Vol 8 HC (Image)    - 5,248

51. Night of The Living Dead Day of The Undead (Avatar)  - 1,735
54. Walking Dead TP Vol 3 Safety Behind Bars (Image) - 1,688

Nine of these titles are original graphic novels, five of which are Manga, and one of which, the Crossed book, is a collection of a webcomic. I’m considering OGNs to be titles that haven’t previously appeared in print in the US, although some have been serialized online or abroad. Walking Dead again makes up a quarter of the top twenty. Of the rest, Image’s new launches make a strong showing, Manhattan Projects in particular I’m hearing is selling very strongly. IDW’s Dr Who/Trek crossover has also done quite well, but has sold out already. IDW seem to have a bit of an issue with keeping some collections in print, let’s hope they can get this reprinted before Christmas.

24. The Walking Dead (Image)

08/2012: The Walking Dead #101 - 51,732 (-85.9%)
09/2012: The Walking Dead #102 - 53,337 (+3.1%)

Making just the one appearance for the first time in a few months, it would seem that it’s selling better after issue 100 than retailers expect, and sees another increase.

61. Happy (Image)

09/2012: Happy #1 - 32,977

Grant Morrison and Darrick Robertson score big with this heartwarming tale of a scummy hitman and a miniature talking blue horse that only he can see. It’s being written up as a devastating critique of modern crime comics in some quarters, personally I just think they’re having fun with an enormously silly and brutal crime book, not much more. Good sales anyway.

85. Buffy The Vampire Slayer (Dark Horse)

09/2007: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #6 - 96,556
09/2008: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #18 - 77,589
09/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #28 - 52,303

07/2012: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #11 - 27,490 (-1.4%)
08/2012: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #12 - 26,569 (-3.4%)
09/2012: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #13 - 25,864 (-2.7%)

Dropping faster than it should be this far into the run, but it’s still Dark Horse’s top seller by quite some margin, and the collections are still doing pretty well.

94. X-O Manowar (Valiant)

05/2012: X-O Manowar #1 - 42,708
06/2012: X-O Manowar #2 - 21,261 (-50.2%)
07/2012: X-O Manowar #3 - 18,149 (-14.6%)
08/2012: X-O Manowar #4 - 16,882 (-7.0%)
09/2012: X-O Manowar #5 - 23,800 (+41.0%)

Getting a big boost this month by the first appearance of Ninjak in the new Valiant universe.

104. Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation (IDW)

05/2012: Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation #1 - 20,940 (24,836)
06/2012: Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation #2 - 19,273 (-8.0%)
07/2012: Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation #3 - 21,996 (+14.1%)
08/2012: Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation #4 - 22,133 (+0.6%)
09/2012: Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation #5 - 22,022 (-0.5%)

Very, very stable, and a good 5,000 copies better off than IDW’s next best-selling book.

105. Spawn (Image)

09/2007: Spawn #171 - 23,768
09/2008: Spawn #183 -

12/2011: Spawn #214 - 13,017 (-2.6%)
01/2012: Spawn #215 - 12,794 (-1.7%)
02/2012: Spawn #216 - 12,671 (-1.0%)
03/2012: Spawn #217 - 12,686 (+0.1%)
04/2012: Spawn #218 - 12,680 (0%)
05/2012: Spawn #219 - 12,804 (+1.0%)
06/2012: Spawn #220 - 30,136 (+135.4%)
06/2012: Spawn 20th Anniversary Coll Special #1 - 6,546
07/2012: Spawn #221 - 15,801 (-47.6%)
08/2012: Spawn #222 - 18,336 (+16.0%)
09/2012: Spawn #223 - 21,965 (+19.8%)

I don’t know whether these increased sales are down to the tribute variant covers, or genuine interest in the story, but I cynically suspect the latter. It also may have something to do with confusion over whether this or the last issue had the Walking Dead tribute cover, I found images of the cover with both numbers on it online.

117. Adventure Time (Boom!)

02/2012: Adventure Time #1 - 12,392 (20,915)
03/2012: Adventure Time #2 - 11,329 (20,193) (-8.6%)

07/2012: Adventure Time #6 - 19,767 (-5.4%)
08/2012: Adventure Time #7 - 19,423 (-1.7%)
09/2012: Adventure Time #8 - 19,755 (+1.7%)

133. Adventure Time Marceline & the Scream Queens (Boom!)

07/2012: Marceline & the Scream Queens #1 - 21,182
08/2012: Marceline & the Scream Queens #2 - 17,428 (-17.7%)
09/2012: Marceline & the Scream Queens #3 - 17,071 (-2.0%)

Both books are exceptionally strong and stable at the moment, while back issues continue to fly out of stores everywhere. Boom would be well advised to keep those issues in print even after the collection comes out, I’m hearing of some stores selling hundreds of them.

127. The Manhattan Projects (Image)

03/2012: The Manhattan Projects #1 - 17,955 (23,168)
04/2012: The Manhattan Projects #2 - 15,697 (-12.6%)
05/2012: The Manhattan Projects #3 - 18,001 (+14.7%)
06/2012: The Manhattan Projects #4 - 18,544 (+3.0%)

08/2012: -
09/2012: The Manhattan Projects #6 - 17,981 (-2.3%)

Despite a small dip this month, overall this is doing very well indeed, and is still selling more than it debuted with.

129. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing (IDW)

09/2011: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #2 - 19,333

====

10/2011: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #3 - 22,855 (+18.2%)

08/2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #13 - 18,342 (-2.4%)
09/2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #14 - 17,682 (-3.6%)

Starting to drop off a little faster than before, as the retro novelty slightly wears off.

131, 175. The Shadow (Dynamite)

04/2012: The Shadow #1 - 45,548
05/2012: The Shadow #2 - 21,982 (-51.7%)
06/2012: The Shadow #3 - 19,554 (-11.0%)
07/2012: -
08/2012: The Shadow #4 - 19,063 (-2.5%)
09/2012: The Shadow #5 - 17,284 (-9.3%)
09/2012: The Shadow Annual #1 - 11,437 (-33.8%)

Dropping faster for Garth Ennis’ last issue, with the Annual giving a hint at where the title’s sales may lie under another writer.

134. Thief of Thieves (Image)

02/2012: Thief of Thieves #1 - 17,877
03/2012: Thief of Thieves #2 - 14,286 (-20.1%)

08/2012: Thief of Thieves #7 - 18,266 (-7.4%)
09/2012: Thief of Thieves #8 - 17,070 (-6.5%)

Another book where the honeymoon is definitely over, although the trade is selling well.

138. Buffy The Vampire Slayer Spike (Dark Horse)

09/2012: BTVS Spike #2 - 16,589 (-14.4%)

08/2012: Angel & Faith #13 - 16,453 (-1.2%)
09/2012: Angel & Faith #14 - 16,139 (-1.9%)

Buffy’s two vampire exes are occupying roughly the same sales level, a good second issue drop for Spike and Angel drifting gently down.

140. The Boys (Dynamite)

09/2007: The Boys #10 - 32,077
09/2008: The Boys #22 - 27,104

143. Star Wars Darth Vader Ghost Prison (Dark Horse)

08/2012: Darth Vader Ghost Prison #4 - 15,850 (-3.0%)
09/2012: Darth Vader Ghost Prison #5 - 15,455 (-2.5%)

The villains seem to be the more popular characters at the moment, but Brian Wood’s new ongoing, set around the original movie trilogy, looks like it will do well.

144. Harbinger (Valiant)

06/2012: Harbinger #1 - 32,111
07/2012: Harbinger #2 - 17,239 (-46.3%)

Harbinger looks to be settling down sales-wise, the other two still have a little way to go.

08/2012: Invincible #94 - 14,355 (-1.3%)
09/2012: Invincible #95 - 14,088 (-1.9%)

Dropping off a little over the last couple of months, but heading towards it’s hundredth issue. I suspect that won’t sell quite as much as Kirkman’s other long running book.

153. Revival (Image)

07/2012: Revival #1 - 18,039
08/2012: Revival #2 - 10,486 (-41.9%)
09/2012: Revival #3 - 13,943 (+33.0%)

A big increase, as the retailers hurry to adjust their orders to meet demand. Every issue has gone to reprint so far.

155. Star Trek The Next Generation Hive (IDW)

09/2012: Star Trek Next Generation Hive #1 - 13,927

Buoyed by the success of the Dr Who crossover, IDW add a new Next Generation series, also featuring the Borg and Voyager’s Seven of Nine.

157. Star Wars Lost Tribe of the Sith Spiral (Dark Horse)

08/2012: Lost Tribe of the Sith Spiral #1 - 15,667
09/2012: Lost Tribe of the Sith Spiral #2 - 13,648 (-12.9%)

An reasonable second-issue drop for this tale of the earlier days of the Star Wars Universe.

06/2012: Massive #1 - 22,173

Yeah, as expected, not a huge audience for these comics, having lost 50% of its sales in the first four issues.

190. Guarding The Globe (Image)

09/2012: Guarding The Globe #1 - 10,183

Spinning off from Invincible, this is selling around where you would expect for a teambook of Robert Kirkman’s second-tier characters.

191. Godzilla Half-Century War (IDW)

08/2012: Godzilla Half Century War #1 - 11,010
09/2012: Godzilla Half Century War #2 - 9,454 (-14.1%)

Selling better than the parent book, James Stokoe seems to be the main draw here, and it’s gone into second-print.

The two books are selling almost at the same level, slowly shedding readers though.

197. Peter Cannon Thunderbolt (Dynamite)

09/2012: Peter Cannon Thunderbolt #1 - 9,115

Yet another Dynamite relaunch of a character absolutely no-one was asking for. There were a lot of variant covers, and I will be very surprised if it lasts a year.

09/2012: Crossed Badlands #13 - 8,882 (-0.2%)
09/2012: Crossed Badlands #14 - 8,678 (-2.3%)

Continuing its slow downward trend, they’re already trailing that Garth Ennis will return for the 50th and 100th issues, in um, late 2013 and 2015. That seems a little premature.

202. The Crow (IDW)

08/2012: The Crow #2 - 11,021 (-41.0%)

Probably not going to level out for this series, but James O’Barr is returning for the next series for the first time in some 23 years, since the initial 5 issue series.

Both main titles drifting downwards, and waiting for the new, somewhat delayed, film.

08/2012: Witchblade #159 - 8,598 (+0.5%)
09/2012: Witchblade #160 - 8,202 (-4.6%)

Ouch, after a fairly stable six months it starts dropping at a much swifter rate.

209. Mars Attacks (IDW)

06/2012: Mars Attacks #1 - 43,514

Not really stabilizing yet.

09/2012: Vampirella #22 - 8,027 (-6.6%)
09/2012: Vampirella #23 - 7,790 (-3.0%)

Dynamite seem to be pumping out as many issues of this as possible before the audience dwindles to nothing.

215. New Crusaders Rise Of The Heroes (Archie)

09/2012: New Crusaders Rise Of The Heroes #1 - 7,990

Despite an abortive relaunch of these characters only a few years ago through DC, Archie have another go at teaming their super-hero characters, with the sort of sales you’d expect.

217. Peanuts (Boom!)

11/2011: Peanuts #0 - 22,644
01/2012: Peanuts #1 - 11,994 (-47.0%)
02/2012: Peanuts #2 - 10,584 (-11.8%)
03/2012: Peanuts #3 - 10,188 (-3.7%)

08/2012: Peanuts v2 #1 - 9,936 (-2.7%)
09/2012: Peanuts v2 #2 - 7,955 (-19.9%)

I’ve mentioned before that I’m not very keen on these new comics, especially as Schulz specifically requested in his will that no new strips should be produced, so I can’t say that I’m disappointed with the large drop it suffered this month, and wouldn’t be unhappy if they stopped selling at all. Nothing against Boom!, I love many of the comics they publish, just not this one.

218, 226. True Blood (IDW)

09/2012: True Blood Ongoing #4 - 7,932 (-6.1%)
09/2012: True Blood Ongoing #5 - 7,480 (-5.7%)

Judging by these drops, the comic series doesn’t seem to be capturing the same loyalty that the TV show engenders.

08/2012: Rachel Rising #10 - 8,330 (+1.7%)
09/2012: Rachel Rising #11 - 7,915 (-5.0%)

A much larger drop than normal, whether this signals a larger decline or not, we will have to see.

09/2011: Haunt #26 - 7,840 (-4.7%)

Sadly, post-Capullo, this seems a bit doomed, despite the quality of Joe Casey and Nathan Fox’s work.

A bit up on last year, the Simpson’s Halloween Annual still sells pretty well.

Again, both books dropping a little quicker than they should be at this point, and awaiting the new GI Joe film.

Not really great sales for a Mark Waid comic, but I guess pretty good for a relatively obscure British property. You’d imagine UK sales are proportionally pretty good (remembering they’re not reported here).

233. The Creep (Dark Horse)

08/2012: The Creep #0 - 8,185
09/2012: The Creep #1 - 7,236 (-11.6%)

Not a bad second-issue drop on one hand, but then on the other hand, the last issue was reprinted from DHP, this is the first all-new issue. On the third hand, I think retailers might have slightly under-ordered.

08/2012: -
09/2012: GFT Jungle Book #5 - 6,763 (-7.5%)

Totally standard sales. GFT solidly tends to sell around 6-7,000 copies, regardless of what the title is.

243. Harvest (Image)

08/2012: Harvest #1 - 8,189
09/2012: Harvest #2 - 6,788 (-17.1%)

A fairly good drop, there seems to be quite good word-of-mouth on this series.

245. Doctor Who Ongoing (IDW)

09/2011: Doctor Who Vol. 2 #9 - 7,324

====

10/2011: Doctor Who Vol. 2 #10 - 7,481 (+2.1%)

04/2012: Doctor Who Vol. 2 #16 - 6,973 (0%)
09/2012: Doctor Who Annual 2012 - 6,722 (-3.6%)

An annual presages a new ongoing series, with Mark Buckingham on art duties.

246. Popeye (IDW)

04/2012: Popeye #1 - 12,250
05/2012: -
06/2012: Popeye #2 - 9,983 (-18.5%)

08/2012: Popeye #4 - 7,726 (-12.7%)
09/2012: Popeye #5 - 6,719 (-13.0%)

Another one still a little way off finding its level.

247. It Girl & The Atomics (Image)

08/2012: It Girl & The Atomics #1 - 6,503
09/2012: It Girl & The Atomics #2 - 6,641 (+2.1%)

Bucking the trend, a small rise for the second issue, although I think that might indicate the first issue was under-ordered more than anything else.

248. Mega Man (Archie)

09/2011: Mega Man #5 - 8,741

====

10/2011: Mega Man #6 - 7,474 (-14.5%)

08/2012: Mega Man #16 - 6,044 (+1.9%)
09/2012: Mega Man #17 - 6,638 (+9.8%)

A very good rise, for no specific reason I can see.

06/2012: Call of Wonderland #2 - 7,418 (-5.5%)

Again, standard GFT sales.

251. Michael Avon Oeming's The Victories (Dark Horse)

08/2012: Michael Avon Oeming's The Victories #1 - 9,511
09/2012: Michael Avon Oeming's The Victories #2 - 6,511 (-31.5)

A fairly big drop, despite Oeming’s name, this seems a little generic in the superheroes gone bad genre.

252. Flash Gordon Zeitgeist (Dynamite)

11/2011: Flash Gordon Zeitgeist #1 - 18,288
01/2012: Flash Gordon Zeitgeist #2 - 8,611 (-52.9%)

07/2012:
08/2012: -
09/2012: Flash Gordon Zeitgeist #6 - 6,500 (-0.7%)

Lagging further behind, but sales are rock-solid this month.

253. Dark Shadows Vampirella (Dynamite)

08/2012:Dark Shadows Vampirella #1 - 7,899
09/2012:Dark Shadows Vampirella #2 - 6,497 (-17.7%)

Standard second-issue drop.

09/2012: The Cape 1969 #3 - 6,484 (-11.7%)

Not stabilizing as well as the last series.

257. Jennifer Blood First Blood (Dynamite)

09/2012: Jennifer Blood First Blood #1 - 6,372

Not too bad, only about 600 copies behind the main series.

258. Planet of the Apes Cataclysm (Boom!)

09/2011: Planet of the Apes #6 - 6,890

====

10/2011: Planet of the Apes #7 - 6,889 (0.0%)

08/2012: -
09/2012: Planet of the Apes Cataclysm #1 - 6,264 (+31.4%)

A good increase for the new ongoing series (which I incorrectly stated in an earlier column was a mini-series, sorry people!).

260. Hypernaturals (Boom!)

06/2012: Hypernaturals #1 - 10,854
07/2012: -
08/2012: Hypernaturals #2 - 7,110 (-34.5%)
09/2012: Hypernaturals #3 - 6,022 (-15.3%)

Starting to stabilize, but I really thought this series would be selling far better. It’s good stuff, people!

261. Prophet (Image)

01/2012: Prophet #21 - 6,029
02/2012: Prophet #22 - 6,030 (0%)

08/2012: Prophet #28 - 5,969 (-2.4%)
09/2012: Prophet #29 - 5,899 (-1.2%)

In slow decline, although the first collection is doing well.

262. Green Hornet (Dynamite)

09/2011: Green Hornet #18 - 9,279

08/2012: Green Hornet #27 - 6,071 (-5.3%)
09/2012: Green Hornet #28 - 5,939 (-2.2%)

Another slowly declining series.

08/2012: -
09/2012: Red Room #3 - 5,938 (-6.0%)

Leveling out.

08/2012: Bionic Woman #3 - 6,565 (-6.9%)
09/2012: Bionic Woman #4 - 5,928 (-9.7%)

Not leveling out.

266. Stumptown (Oni)

09/2012: Stumptown v2 #1 - 5,899

Greg Rucka’s low-rent Portland PI returns, probably slightly under-ordered, I hear it’s been seeing strong reorders.

268. Hell Yeah (Image)

03/2012: Hell Yeah #1 - 10,908
04/2012: Hell Yeah #2 - 8,161 (-25.2%)

07-08/2012: -
09/2012: Hell Yeah #5 - 5,872 (-13.0%)

The last issue, I think, and the drops were accelerating.

269. Hellraiser (Boom!)

08/2012: Hellraiser #17 - 6,064 (-2.2%)
09/2012: Hellraiser #18 - 5,852 (-3.5%)

This is starting to approach what must be unsustainable levels for a licensed book.

270. Artifacts (Image)

08/2012: Artifacts #20 - 6,070 (-2.1%)
09/2012: Artifacts #21 - 5,814 (-4.2%)

Top Cow seem to be having a bit of a crisis, sales-wise at the moment, none of their books seem to be doing too well. Their recent reboot, which sprang out of this series, doesn’t seem to have had much effect.

271. Dark Horse Presents (Dark Horse)

08/2012: Dark Horse Presents #15 - 6,154 (-4.6%)
09/2012: Dark Horse Presents #16 - 5,765 (-6.3%)

Slightly precipitous drops, but as usual, the economics are a bit different on this eight dollar book.

272. Think Tank (Image)

08/2012: Think Tank #1 - 6,502
09/2012: Think Tank #2 - 5,713 (-12.1%)

A good drop, with decent word of mouth helping it out. I

08/2012: Myths and Legends #19 - 5,547 (-3.0%)

And the hits keep on coming for Top Cow this month. I mean that more in a boxing-metaphor way, rather than actual success, obviously.

This one seems to be picking up a little word of mouth, but Matt Kindt has always had a bigger audience outside of the direct market.

I have no idea how this will be selling come the end of the series. Badly, I think.

08/2012: Classic Popeye #1 - 5,867
09/2012: Classic Popeye #2 - 4,924 (-16.1%)

All figures on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month.

  1. Thanks for all the work, as always.

    “02/2012: Thief of Thieves #1 – 17,877
    09/2012: Thief of Thieves #8 – 17,070 (-6.5%)
Another book where the honeymoon is definitely over, although the trade is selling well.”

How does dropping just 4.5% between issue 1 and issue #8 signal the honeymoon being over?

“160. The Massive (Dark Horse) A surprisingly big drop, this book should be doing far better than this.”

That was the issue where the artist changed, wasn’t it?

“190. Guarding The Globe (Image) Spinning off from Invincible, this is selling around where you would expect for a teambook of Robert Kirkman’s second-tier characters.”

How does it compare to the miniseries of the same name from a year or two ago?

“220. Haunt (Image) Sadly, post-Capullo, this seems a bit doomed, despite the quality of Joe Casey and Nathan Fox’s work.”

Personally, I wasn’t able to get into Casey & Fox’s work on Haunt despite generally be fans of their work, and having been a fan of the book prior to their arrival. It’s just so far off from what the book was in every conceivable way that it doesn’t even feel like the same book, other than the basic premise. The storytelling style is a complete 180, the main characters don’t act the same way anymore, most of the supporting cast has been MIA, and the art is frequently hard to follow. Creators aside, if you were a fan of the title the way it ran for the first 18 issues, I can understand being completely turned off by the post-19 issues.

  2. @Jason – With Thief of Thieves, it’s more about the percentage drops than where it is now. It rose up to almost 20,000 copies, but the last two months dropped almost 3,000 of those. It’s less of a drop in October but still on a downward heading.

The Massive, I’d be surprised if many retailers would drop their orders for an artist change, it’s very much Brian Wood’s book.

The last series of Guarding The Globe never shipped in September, which is why I didn’t list the previous series, but it started on 15,013 and ended on 7,321.

  3. 160. The Massive (Dark Horse)
    06/2012: Massive #1 – 22,173
    07/2012: Massive #2 – 16,600 (-25.1%)
    08/2012: Massive #3 – 15,310 (-7.8%)
    09/2012: Massive #4 – 13,427 (-12.3%)
A surprisingly big drop, this book should be doing far better than this.

Personally, I have found this book to be disjointed and uninspiring thus far. It seems like others agree. I dropped the title despite being a huge fan of Wood’s previous work.

Word is that IDW is re-configuring their Joe & Cobra titles so they are addressing their crazy sales drops in time for the new movie. The Cobra title has been excellent and deserves a larger audience.

  4. @Christopher – It seems a little harsh to judge it only 4 issues into what is likely to be a relatively long run (if sales support, anyway), he’s only setting the scene at the moment, introducing the characters, but each to their own. Hopefully the collections will be able to support the book for those of us who are enjoying it.

  5. Four issues deep and I should be able to get a basic handle on characters, timeline, and narrative thrust. Thus far, I find myself struggling with all three. Hopefully, the book will shape up well but I’m gonna wait it out and sales seem to indicate that others agree.

  6. In regards to Spawn,

“I don’t know whether these increased sales are down to the tribute variant covers, or genuine interest in the story, but I cynically suspect the latter.”

Don’t you mean the former rather than the latter?

  7. 1: Should Planet of the Apes Cataclysm’s numbers be compared more with Gabe Hardman’s 2 POTA miniseries, instead of the (formerly?) ongoing POTA series?

2: I doubt the GI JOE film will impact comic sales at all. The 1st one did nothing for the books back in ’08.

  8. You know, sometimes when I look at these lists I get a little melancholy. It seems humanity can’t muster enough creativity to do outdo Hawkeye or Aquaman, if its outside of the corporate bubble of DC & Marvel. If you ask me , film noir books are easy pickings. Too many good movies to looks to just redo. Not saying everything has to be original but seeing so much retread on these lists, you wonder why people do what they do.

Spawn Haunt, Thief of Thievess, Invincible, Star Wars Darth Vader Ghost Prison, Happy…Who buys these books? Just put them out to the pasture, someone tank up on Pabst Blue Ribbon at Image and tell McFarlane the 90’s are over, that they are more hell-guys out there than the state of Wisconsin. maybe someof them have stories. And he’s not going to get any more movies made. Just be an artist and start something fresh, believe in what you do.

End Invincible at 100 and few more then call it a day. 100 or 200 issues is a good run. Even 30 iussues. That’s respectable. Steve Ditko did 34 Spidermans. Kirby, a 100 or so FF’s..I see why they drag out Star Wars, Buffy, the Turtles etc. Easy cash for keeping the properties going after they pay the basics. But c’mon, most of these are comics based on retconned toys? It just gets old.

Hopefully things get more interesting when you guys start reporting digital. Comic shops are just creatures of habit who exploit others creatures habits. Hence the variant covers….

  9. I still love that Adventure Time comic. It just does so many little things well. It’s really an incredibly well done book.

  10. I disagree about the Peanuts book. If it was new strips then yes, that would go against what Schulz asked for but this is a comic book. No one but Schulz ever did the strip but he was fine with the comics that came out so to me it falls in the same category as the TV specials, movies, commercials, video games and plays.

  11. Concerning The Massive, I too was a little disappointed with the first 3-issues arc. They were kind of thin storywise, and a bit too placid for my tastes. The backup matter revealed more about who those characters were than the actual story, and that’s definitely not a good sign.

But as of issue 4, the series really found its pace, and has become one my favorite reads every month. Guess there was a bit of a learning curve there. And Garry Brown’s artwork is very good indeed!

The sales definitely aren’t terrible, but I wish they were better. If only those first issues had been slightly more exciting…

  12. I wanted to like the Massive, as I always want to like Wood’s work, but again it just couldn’t hook me in. Enjoyed the art, but with the artist change, it made it too easy for me to drop it.

  13. I agree with Christopher that four issues is certainly enough to get the feel for a series. I just picked up a back issue of The Massive but haven’t read it yet. The first issue hadn’t really appealed to me but we’ll see. There have been a lot of great indie titles lately.
Adventure Time drives me crazy with the 5 variants every issue so I stopped buying it. The world of Adventure Time really is a great fit for various writers and artists.

  14. Did I miss “Morning Glories”? I don’t recall it missing a month but I can’t find it here?

  15. @Bifford Michael – You didn’t miss a month, it just didn’t ship in September. I think it shipped the first week in October.

@PeterCSM730 – Really? You don’t need to buy every cover of Adventure Time, y’know, just the one you like. Seems like cutting off your nose to spite your face if you like the comic itself (which you should, it’s great!).

  16. @Paul Mellerick: My poor, poor nose.. It’s fine when there’s one cool cover an issue but when there are two or three or, heaven forbid, four it gets to be too much for me. Missing out on something I like over and over bugs me. Now, if they have all those covers displayed in the trades that’s a good substitute.

  17. I don’t know about the whole Dark Shadows thing. The title has zero to do with the movie, and they certainly don’t go for the same audiences. I doubt this was one of those “hey, I saw an ad for the movie and I wonder if there’s a comic book I could try out” sort of properties. Fans of the original are very loyal to the property in all its formats (30+ audio books from Big Finish, for instance) and given Dynamite’s other lackluster licensed properties it’s not like they’d be making room on the floor for some other book. I get the feeling this book may be doing much better on avenues like Amazon where they’re peddled straight to the audience, which includes a lot of middle-aged women who do not visit Diamond-serviced comic book stores.

  18. They are continuing publication of Queen Sonja? I am surprised since it disappeared from solicitations midyear for the Atlantis mini-series or what looked like to me the conclusion of the regular series. Guess not. Red Sonja is published now on a semi-quarterly basis or whatever Dynamite and Trautman calls regular in their bizzaro shipping schedule.
