September may not have seemed to create any records for sales, but if you look more closely at the charts you’ll discover some interesting things. The bottom title on the chart (Farscape #11 from Boom!) sold more copies than any title in the #300 position in almost fifteen years.

Even compared to last month the #300 title is selling incredibly well. In fact, last month’s top 300 chart featured 55 titles that would have failed to chart this month. Wow.

What this means is that I’ve actually done the stats for every indie book in the top 300. Don’t expect this every month, but I’ll see what I can do.

Dark Horse nabbed the top spot amongst non Marvel/DC publishers this month in part thanks to a strong suite of graphic novels and collections including Dr. Horrible (6,582 copies and #2 on the GN chart), The Amazing Screw On Head & Other Stories (5,660 copies and #4), and Empowered vol 6 (4,276 copies and #7) amongst others. Their dollar share was 6.06%, and their market share was 4.73%. Image had a dollar share of 5.68% and a market share of 4.60%. Their top graphic novel this month was the 13th and newest collection of Invincible (5,968 copies and #3), while the Walking Dead collections continue to be reordered heavily. IDW had a dollar share of 4.59%, a market share of 4.26%, and failed to have a graphic novel in the top 50.

Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates, and can be found here.

According to Eric Stephenson this issue of The Walking Dead was returnable. Diamond has in the past reduced the numbers for returnable books, but it doesn’t seem possible to tell if that happened here.

In the same interview Stephenson mentioned that more than 30,000 copies of issue 78 were printed, though that would include UK sales, and that the collections have sold almost three million copies in total.

                                2 year (-23.8%)

Someone suggested in the comments last month that readers of Hellboy had moved over to trade paperback collections. Hellboy volume 8 had first month sales of 6,234 in May of 2008, while volume 10 sold 5,776 copies (slightly up on volume 9) in June 2010. This is only first month sales to comic book shops, so readers could be buying the collections from bookshops, or just waiting longer to buy them.

Six more this month, and the only real surprise is that Magnus Robot Fighter sold better than Usagi Yojimbo or Groo. I think it reprints the same Russ Manning issue that was in the back of Magnus #1 last month, can anyone confirm this?

Ship on time, sales go down. Avatar does well on reorders, while later solicitations of alternative covers and reprints mean it’s possible to pick up readers as the series progresses.

Massive drop. This one only has two covers instead of the three that issue two had. It was supposed to ship in July. The drops continue in the October charts, so this doesn’t seem to be a fluke.

There’s still one of Robert Kirkman’s vaguely named Pilot Season comics due to come out (Hardcore), but Top Cow seem to have stormed ahead with the next round, with the predictable drop in sales.

==========

Just a reminder, all numbers on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to the direct market. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month. These numbers don’t include sales through Diamond UK. They are frequently low.

Matthew Murray reads a lot of zines and comics, but he always wants more.

  1. Were there more “independent” titles this month? Are the indie titles gaining more dollar and unit share of the Top 300?

Also, Bongo’s titles sell INCREDIBLY well as collected trades, especially in bookstores. I usually don’t read the comics, unless it’s a cool story (like the recent cross-over) or the current “Death” mini-series.

  2. With all the variant covers that Dynamite publishes per book, it makes me think of the early 90s…. and not in a good way. The sales on the Green Hornet seem to be falling. I hope it doesn’t get cancelled before the movie comes out.

  3. DARKHOARSE will have to find something to replace the soon to end Buffy title which is their best seller. The recent Valiant relaunched books are cutting it. I personally tries both Solar and Magnus and while Jim Shooter is writting them, they are not quite as good as in the 90’s Valiant Era. Magnus is ok, Solar is pretty lame. Hope the relaunch of Conan will be better than these two. Anyone tried Turok? Worth my 4$?

  4. >>>09/2010: The Walking Dead #77 – 27,448 (+3.4%)
According to Eric Stephenson this issue of The Walking Dead was returnable. Diamond has in the past reduced the numbers for returnable books, but it doesn’t seem possible to tell if that happened here.

In the same interview Stephenson mentioned that more than 30,000 copies of issue 78 were printed, though that would include UK sales,<<<

Typically, books are only reduced on the charts when returnability is announced ahead of time — that was not the case in this situation.

As a general rule of thumb, you can add +20% to any number to get the Diamond UK/Fudge Factor, so "more than 30k" would seem to make sense.

(on something like, say, TURF, which has heavy UK-interest, I suspect the "Fudge" can go closer to 50%, but that's fairly rare)

  5. “DARKHOARSE will have to find something to replace the soon to end Buffy title which is their best seller.”

Isn’t there going to be a Buffy season 9?

  6. 197. Mouse Guard (Archaia)

    06/2010: Legends of the Guard #1 – 10,918
    06/2010: Legends of the Guard #2 – 9,113 (-16.5%)
    07/2010: –
    08/2010: –
    09/2010: Legends of the Guard #3 – 9,289 (+1.9%)
Sales go up despite delays, indicating strong sales of the first two issues.

Did issue #4 ever ship? I just bought the Hardcover this week, and was surprised to see it because I don’t recall ever seeing issue #4 on the shelf.

  7. Interesting that Larry Hama’s continuation of GI Joe books from 20-30 years ago is outselling the newish incarnation.

I picked up the first 2 issues but dropped them after it had Hawk shooting cops in theface (evil Cobra cops but still…) it read too much like a right-wing paranoid screed.

  8. “#15 was the “Kramer’s Ergot” issue, but that didn’t seem to have an effect on sales.”

And I would bet that was only because they didn’t reprint it. The shop I used to work at only ordered 5 copies initially but probably could have sold 25 more had we been able to get them.

  9. re: Chew

I should approach these charts with more caution — the shock of seeing a book I like gaining sales over the course of a year nearly put me on the floor. ;)

  10. It must be so great being Kirkman right now! ;) A smash hit TV series and all the extra interest in the Walking Dead trades and single issues because of it.

With all the praising of Morning Glories I will be checking out the trade when it comes out.

And seeing Stumptown on the chart again has reminded me again that I should be reading this series! I need me my Rucka fix! haha… :)

  11. Torsten: I’ve thought about including stats like that. I’ll try and do some this week.

Keyser: I don’t think Dynamite care if the book is cancelled by then or not, as long as they can get the collections into bookstores. However with this many different books I feel as though the average person will take a look and just say “no”.

Naveed: Season 9 of Buffy is launching next year, in conjunction with a relaunch of the Angel series.

    Brian: Thanks for the info!

GoofBall814: Midtown Comics lists Mouseguard: Legends of the Guard #4 as coming out this week. I did see a reference on one website that the hardcover was coming out before before the final issue. Something got screwed up with that series.

DanielT: That’s too bad about them not reprinting the book.

Suzene: It’s nice to see success stories like Chew. I wish there were more though.

James: Kirkman’s success is what most “mainstream indie” (hah) creators aspires to duplicate.
