Indie Month-to-Month Sales October 2013: Indies rebound after that dastardly Villains Monthhttp://ift.tt/1bMdMgg

24378

By Paul Mellerick

Far more indie titles this month after DC’s Villains month stunt last month, that added 52 extra DC titles into the chart. 135 indie titles charted in the top 300, up on last month’s 109.

Partly, but not entirely due to this month’s Walking Dead issue, the indie chart sold approximately 2,031,509 comics, way higher than last month’s 1,521,695. It also means that the average sales this month are 15,048, up on last month’s 13,960.

Out of the 135 books, 24 went up in sales and 91 went down, with the rest made up of one-shots and debuts.

One interesting thing about this month’s chart is that none of the titles that missed the chart as a result of the extra Villains month comics returned this month. There were enough new titles from Marvel and DC, and high charting new indie titles, plus a number of double-shipping books; as a consequence not a one of them sold well enough to reappear.

Image have another great month with a 9.26% dollar share and a 10.85% market share, while IDW have a 6.27% dollar share and 4.96% market share, Dark Horse have a 5.36% dollar share and a 4.70% market share, Dynamite have a 2.47% dollar share and 2.54% market share and Boom! have a 1.84% dollar share and 1.78% market share.

UK and European sales from Diamond UK are not reported in this chart.

Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates, and can be found here.

1. The Walking Dead (Image)

10/2008: The Walking Dead #53 - 24,094
10/2009: The Walking Dead #66 - 24,944
10/2010: The Walking Dead #78 - 27,947
10/2011: The Walking Dead #90 - 31,778
10/2012: The Walking Dead #103 - 74,378

====

11/2012: The Walking Dead #104 - 57,456 (-22.8%)
12/2012: The Walking Dead #105 - 57,781 (+0.6%)
01/2013: The Walking Dead #106 - 70,526 (+22.1%)
02/2013: The Walking Dead #107 - 63,575 (-9.9%)
02/2013: The Walking Dead The Governor Special - 51,355
03/2013: The Walking Dead #108 - 67,423 (+6.1%)
04/2013: The Walking Dead #109 - 90,362 (+34.0%)
05/2013: The Walking Dead #110 - 76,455 (-15.4%)
06/2013: The Walking Dead #111 - 74,857 (-2.1%)
07/2013: The Walking Dead #112 - 72,975 (-2.5%)
08/2013: The Walking Dead #113 - 70,273 (-3.7%)
09/2013: The Walking Dead #114 - 70,440 (+0.2%)
10/2013: The Walking Dead #115 - 310,584 (+340.9%)
10/2013: The Walking Dead Tyreese Special - 40,572
10/2013: The Walking Dead #1 10th Anniversary Ed - 39,780

Thirteen covers give Walking Dead its second number one, another amazing result for Robert Kirkman. It doesn’t quite reach the lofty height of the hundredth issue, which sold 366,051, but it isn’t far off. The Tyreese special sells around ten thousand copies less than the Governor or Michonne ones, but the character is long gone in the comic, and the stories it reprints are a little more recent. The Anniversary edition is the first time the debut issue has been printed in color, and at 6 bucks does very well.

28. The Star Wars (Dark Horse)

09/2013: The Star Wars #1 - 78,467
10/2013: The Star Wars #2 - 56,165 (28.4%)

Not too bad a drop, considering the high mark it started at. I suspect it will drop rather quickly over the course of the series; it’s going to be a bit too odd for a lot of people.

30. Saga (Image)

10/2013: -

====

11/2012: Saga #7 - 46,971 (53,267)(+15.7%)
12/2012: Saga #8 - 42,324 (48,965)(-9.9%)
01/2013: Saga #9 - 45,629 (+7.8%)
02/2013: Saga #10 - 48,388 (+6.0%)
03/2013: Saga #11 - 50,023 (+3.4%)
04/2013: Saga #12 - 53,339 (+6.6%)
05-07/2013: -
08/2013: Saga #13 - 55,372 (+3.8%)
09/2013: Saga #14 - 55,585 (+0.4%)
10/2013: Saga #15 - 54,816 (-1.4%)

A minor drop, but still holding up very well sales-wise. Every issue of this book gets better and better.

36. Pretty Deadly (Image)

10/2013: Pretty Deadly #1 - 45,883

A great launch, but I suspect this will be one of the ones that has a steep drop to come next month. It’s a great looking book though.

41. Velvet (Image)

10/2013: Velvet #1 - 41,897

On the other hand, I think this will hold its sales a little better, as Ed Brubaker & Steve Epting introduce a rarity, a middle-aged female star. She’s a retired super-spy, but still…

42. Afterlife with Archie (Archie)

10/2013: Afterlife With Archie #1 - 41,533

Surprise of the year, I’d say. Played as a completely straight horror story, this is an amazingly high quality book, written by Robert Aguirre Sacasa and illustrated by Francesco Francavilla, and printed on lovely paper with a card cover. Sales have been amazing, and it’s still selling, with a second print coming. I suspect the second issue will be badly under-ordered.

68, 159. Star Wars (Dark Horse)

01/2013: Star Wars #1 - 39,663 (63,410)
02/2013: Star Wars #2 - 46,063 (+16.1%)

05/2013: Star Wars #5 - 44,310 (-1.6%)
06/2013: Star Wars #6 - 42,806 (-3.4%)
07/2013: Star Wars #7 - 41,611 (-2.8%)
08/2013: Star Wars #8 - 38,792 (-6.8%)
09/2013: Star Wars #9 - 37,502 (-3.3%)
10/2013: Star Wars #10 - 36,019 (-3.9%)
10/2013: 1-for-$1 Star Wars #1 - 16,690

Dropping a little quickly, but not too worrying yet, while the 1-for-$1 reprint does decent numbers.

108. Lazarus (Image)

05/2013: Lazarus #1 - 48,030
07/2013: Lazarus #2 - 27,143 (31,470)(-43.5%)

Starting to level out at a good number.

12/2012: My Little Pony #2 - 39,841 (-50.3%)
01/2013: -
02/2013: My Little Pony #3 - 43,579 (+9.4%)
02/2013: MLP #1 & #2 Hot Topic Pack - 8,988
03/2013: My Little Pony #4 - 41,541 (-4.7%)
03/2013: My Little Pony #5 - 36,354 (-12.5%)
04/2013: My Little Pony #6 - 33,903 (-6.7%)
05/2013: My Little Pony #7 - 32,188 (-5.1%)

08/2013: My Little Pony Cover Gallery #1 - 6,859
09/2013: My Little Pony #11 - 32,784 (+33.9%)
10/2013: My Little Pony #12 - 23,686 (-27.7%)
10/2013: My Little Pony 2013 Annual - 18,614

I don’t understand the sales of this book at all, it seems to be all over the place.

110. Samurai Jack (IDW)

10/2013: Samurai Jack #1 - 23,661

The cult-favourite cartoon returns in new comics, following Powerpuff Girls last month.

119. Sex Criminals (Image)

09/2013: Sex Criminals #1 - 37,893
10/2013: Sex Criminals #2 - 22,510 (-40.6%)

A pretty hefty drop, but a very quick sell-out and second print for this issue, so it may go back up a little next month.

122. Trish Out of Water (Aspen)

10/2013: Trish Out of Water #1 - 22,080

Dollar book, one of the lower selling ones in this series.

131. Shaolin Cowboy (Dark Horse)

10/2013: Shaolin Cowboy #1 - 20,257

Geoff Darrow’s surreal martial artist returns, in a new series. Hopefully this means we’ll be seeing the older issues back in print very soon.

132. Rocket Girl (Image)

10/2013: Rocket Girl #1 - 20,287

Amy Reeder launches her creator owned book at Image, and does decent numbers.

147, 156. Adventure Time (Boom!)

09/2013: Adventure Time #20 - 18,822 (-5.2%)
10/2013: Adventure Time #21 - 18,156 (-3.5%)
10/2013: Adventure Time 2013 Spooktacular - 16,920

Dropping a bit these last few months, but bolstered by what appears to be a quarterly schedule of specials.

154. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (IDW)

10/2011: TMNT #3 - 22,855
10/2012: TMNT #15 - 17,591

160. Three (Image)

10/2013: Three #1 - 16,347

09/2013: Sons of Anarchy #1 - 27,601
10/2013: Sons of Anarchy #2 - 14,688 (-46.8%)

191. Rat Queens (Image)

09/2013: Rat Queens #1 - 21,745
10/2013: Rat Queens #2 - 12,335 (-43.3%)

A pretty sizable drop, not entirely unexpected, fantasy books not being particularly great sellers historically.

193. Chew (Image)

09/2013: Sex #7 - 13,074 (-9.8%)
10/2013: Sex #8 - 12,082 (-7.6%)

Slightly less of a drop this month, is probably the most positive thing I can say at the moment.

196. Star Wars Dark Times (Dark Horse)

02/2013: Fire Carrier #1 - 14,308 (+10.1%)
03/2013: Fire Carrier #2 - 13,077 (-8.6%)

05-09/2013: -
10/2013: MTG Theros #1 - 11,919 (+22.4%)

A return for the CCG tie-in, relaunching a little higher than the last series, but then it does link into the new card set, and I would guess has an exclusive card with it.

200. Conan (Dark Horse)

10/2008: The Cimmerian #4 - 24,790

10/2010: The Cimmerian #24 - 15,490

09/2013: Villain Micro Series #6 - 9,977 (-3.5%)
10/2013: Villain Micro Series #7 - 11,584 (+16.1%)

A decent increase, as this issue spotlights Beebop and Rocksteady, from the old TMNT cartoon.

09/2013: Sidekick #2 - 14,533 (-47.8%)
10/2013: Sidekick #3 - 11,371 (-21.8%)

Quite big drops, possibly they might slow next month, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

205. Quantum & Woody (Valiant)

07/2013: Quantum & Woody #1 - 17,622
08/2013: Quantum & Woody #2 - 12,818 (-27.3%)
09/2013: Quantum & Woody #3 - 10,734 (-16.3%)
10/2013: Quantum & Woody #4 - 11,242 (+4.7%)

A bit of a rise, possibly retailers cut their orders on the last issue a little too much.

208. The Shadow Now (Dynamite)

10/2013: The Shadow Now #1 - 10,989

Bringing the Shadow into the modern age, although with a little less humour than the Andy Helfer/ Kyle Baker run of the early nineties which tried the same trick.

209, 219. Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie)

10/2012: Sonic #242 - 8,695

====

11/2012: -

10/2013: Sonic #253 - 10,982 (+0.1%)

Starting to drop back off a bit towards pre-crossover levels.

09/2013: Star Trek Ongoing #25 - 11,388 (+4.6%)
10/2013: Star Trek Ongoing #26 - 10,872 (-4.5%)

Last month’s increase is a blip, as sales return to almost the exact same level as the issue before.

211. The Shadow (Dynamite)

====

11/2012: The Shadow #7 - 14,884 (-9.0%)

09/2013: The Shadow Annual 2013 - 6,497
10/2013: The Shadow #18 - 10,863 (+9.9%)

A decent little increase, for no apparent reason.

212. Doctor Who Ongoing (IDW)

10/2012: Doctor Who Vol. 3 #2 - 10,824

====

11/2012: -

10/2013: Doctor Who Vol. 3 #14 - 10,826 (-25.3%)

Losing almost all of last month’s increase, not sure why that issue was so popular?

213. Archer & Armstrong (Valiant)

====

11/2012: Archer & Armstrong #4 - 13,478 (-8.4%)

09/2013: Archer & Armstrong #13 - 9,910 (-0.6%)
10/2013: Archer & Armstrong #14 - 10,811 (+9.1%)

Another good increase, probably for the beginning of a new story arc.

214. Peter Panzerfaust (Image)

09/2013: Peter Panzerfaust #14 - 7,714 (-8.4%)
10/2013: Peter Panzerfaust #15 - 10,769 (+39.6%)

Jumping around all over the place with a big increase, obviously this has some way to go until it stabilizes.

215. Uber (Avatar)

04/2013: Uber #0 - 10,849
05/2013: Uber #1 - 16,109 (+32.6%)

08/2013: Uber #5 - 11,598 (-3.6%)
10/2013: Uber #6 - 10,747 (-7.3%)

Taking some time to find its feet with a big drop this month.

216. Rocketeer/ Spirit (IDW)

10/2012: Rocketeer Cargo Of Doom #3 - 10,857

====

11/2012: Rocketeer Cargo Of Doom #4 - 10,699 (-1.5%)

08-09/2013: -
10/2013: Rocketeer/ Spirit Pulp Friction #2 - 10,691 (-11.6%)

Not a bad drop, especially considering it isn’t by the same artist as the first issue.

217. Harbinger (Valiant)

10/2012: Harbinger #5 - 14,603

====

11/2012: Harbinger #6 - 13,617 (-6.7%)

09/2013: Shadowman #10 - 10,064 (+1.7%)
10/2013: Shadowman #11 - 10,632 (+5.6%)

Two Valiant books showing a slight increase, as retailers seem to be struggling to pin down their orders.

220. Grimm Fairy Tales Oz (Zenescope)

07/2013: GFT Oz #1 - 19,237
08/2013: GFT Oz #2 - 11,119 (-42.2%)
10/2013: GFT Oz #3 - 10,537 (-5.2%)

Sales seem to be levelling out at a higher level than most of the GFT books.

221. Itty Bitty Hellboy (Dark Horse)

08/2013: Itty Bitty Hellboy #1 - 15,545
09/2013: Itty Bitty Hellboy #2 - 11,916 (-23.3%)
10/2013: Itty Bitty Hellboy #3 - 10,404 (-12.7%)

Sales settling down, but to be honest this is a pretty disposable book. Personally I’m not a big fan of artist Art Baltazar, but that’s just my opinion.

222. The Shadow Year One (Dynamite)

02/2013: Shadow Year One #1 - 19,310
04/2013: Shadow Year One #2 - 13,748 (-28.9%)

09/2013: Shadow Year One #5 - 11,476 (-7.1%)
10/2013: Shadow Year One #6 - 10,351 (-9.8%)

Dropping below the main book for the first time, and those drops are getting bigger.

223. Conan People of the Black Circle(Dark Horse)

10/2013: Conan People O/T Black Circle #1 - 10,213

A new Conan mini from Fred van Lente, incoming writer on the main book, and Ariel Olivetti, coming in not too far behind that main book in sales.

226. Zero (Image)

09/2013: Zero #1 - 20,352
10/2013: Zero #2 - 9,847 (-51.6%)

A massive and slightly unsurprising, if completely unwarranted drop, this is a great book, with excellent art from Tradd Moore this month. I think the next issue will see sales increase again.

227. Bloodshot (Valiant)

10/2013: Bloodshot & The Hard Corps #15 - 9,806 (-4.1%)

This renaming really doesn’t seem to have helped things much. To be honest, this is the only one of the Valiant books that seems to be floundering a little in how it relates to the rest of the line.

228. Extinction Parade (Avatar)

06/2013: Extinction Parade #1 - 16,061

A slight uptick, possibly due to a rumoured movie deal.

229. Elfquest (Dark Horse)

10/2013: Elfquest Final Quest Special - 9,680

The return of the classic indie comic, although judging by these sales a lot of people seem to have forgotten it.

08-09/2013: -
10/2013: Five Ghosts #6 - 9,399 (-9.7%)

The original mini-series now turns into an ongoing. Not a brilliant start though.

10/2013: Abe Sapien #6 - 9,120 (-5.7%)

Dropping quite fast now, not sure if this might be a spin-off too far as an ongoing series.

246. Grindhouse (Dark Horse)

10/2013: Grindhouse #1 - 8,802

A new horror series from Alex diCampi, firmly in the exploitation movie tradition. Enormous fun.

08-09/2013: -
10/2013: Americas Got Powers #7 - 8,774 (-10.9%)

Although the drops have been quite steep throughout the run of this book, when many Image titles are losing half their sales between the first two issues, it’s fairly creditable that this book took all 7 issues to drop that far.

248. Mara (Image)

12/2012: Mara #1 - 18,164

10/2013: Transformers Regeneration One #95 - 8,663 (-15.5%)

A drop from the zero issue, but up on the last regular issue.

09/2013: -
10/2013: Massive #16 - 8,345 (-4.2%)

Just doesn’t seem to be able to hold its monthly sales, still a great book though. I would imagine the trades will be perennials.

252, 263. Judge Dredd (IDW)

10/2013: Judge Dredd #11 - 8,269 (-4.0%)
10/2013: Judge Dredd #12 - 7,636 (-7.7%)

Starting to drop a bit quickly now. Shame, it’s by far the best US version of the character so far.

Two recent Image books that aren’t managing to hold their impressive early sales.

10/2013: GI Joe Vol 3 #9 - 8,099 (-2.0%)

This is now the highest selling GI Joe book, not looking too healthy really.

A nice little increase for Ron Marz’s first issue back on the book.

09/2013: Halo Initiation #2 - 8,771 (-30.3%)
10/2013: Halo Initiation #3 - 7,960 (-9.2%)

Fairly standard sales pattern over these first three issues.

09/2013: -
10/2013: Game of Thrones #17 - 7,545 (-3.6%)

Sales are dwindling, although the collections apparently sell very well. Dynamite don’t have that license though, I think that’s held by the publisher of the novels.

Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month.
