My sincere apologies for the lateness of the column this month! Some of you may have seen Heidi’s post from a week or two back, unfortunately my life has become very busy recently and I have to give up writing the column. I’ll be continuing while Heidi recruits the best and brightest candidate for my replacement, but it will be a bit later my last month or two.

Lots of new entries this month, including smash-hit new books from Robert Kirkman and Kieron Gillen and a first ever official comic for a cult film favourite. Elsewhere Valiant continue to falter despite the new Armor Hunters crossover, and Zenescope seem to be similarly slipping down and off the sales chart with their numbers dropping to new lows.

148 indie titles charted in the top 300, slightly down on last month’s 149. Overall sales were down at 1,624,693, compared to last month’s 1,632,573 bt the average sales this month are 10,977, virtually unchanged from last month’s 10,957. 24 titles went up in sales and 98 went down, with the rest made up of new entries and specials.

Image continue at number one with an 8.93% dollar share and a 10.51% market share, IDW at second place with a 5.60% dollar share and 4.45% market share. Dark Horse have a 5.57% dollar share and a 4.89% market share, Dynamite have a 2.62% dollar share and 2.30% market share and Boom! have a 2.52 % dollar share and 2.52% market share.

UK and European sales from Diamond UK are not reported in this chart.

Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates, and can be found here.

06/2014: Wicked & Divine #1 - 42,948

Gillen and McKelvie have a genuine smash hit with this book, selling only about 600 copies less than the second issue of their Young Avengers book. In creator-owned terms, that’s huge. Second prints are already out.

All figures on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month.

  1. I wonder if Buffy’s reached its market penetration? It’s selling well compared to other indie stuff, but not well compared to its past history. Starlight is quite good, glad to see it leveling off, even while it ends soon.

  2. I find it odd that Robyn Hood is getting an ongoing after those final numbers for the Legend mini. I’m not complaining, as I’m a fan who will be picking it up, but sub-5000 usually isn’t very promising. Then again, with these smaller publishers, it’s hard to tell what their metrics are for success.

Also, I wonder if Spawn is gonna see a similar uptick for issue 250 like it did for 200. It’s still a decent seller, and the general public knows the brand. I imagine an anniversary issue, combined with the return of Al Simmons, might at least get it into the top 100.

  3. Great launch for Outcast, hope they can sustain these levels. It’d be good for another indie to breach the 40k or even 50k threshold.

Oh and just FYI, some of the numbers are cutting off in my Chrome-based browser. Like the “That’s Because You’re A Robot” entry for example.

  4. I thought Outcast was an incredible read, and I want to see more! So, how do these indie books increase their sales? Their publishers’ marketing budgets are limited, so do they get us to buy their books by getting good reviews, working the conventions, or more?

  5. Glad to see that Godzilla is still holding steady!!
It’s a shame to see such titles like Rocky & Bullwinkle, Tales of Honor, 24, Battlestar Galactica, along with Godzilla hovering down in the 7,000 and below level….I would think with the long-time “cult” followings these franchises have that sales would be better…..
    No Rat Queens in June?

  6. @TotalSnoreFest…..I’ll be interested to see if Low cracked the 40k mark. If not, no worries, Image has a ton of titles being introduced in the second half of 2014, surely one of them will be a success

@armlessPhelan…..Notice how many Zenoscope titles didn’t make it on this list? I would guess that Robyn Hood’s mini being on the list at all merits their decision to give her an ongoing.

@Chris…..I would think Buffy has hit her high-level mark in the market. Just like other “classic” franchises, it’s not bringing in new fans, just entertaining the long faithful that will more or less always be there. That said, Buffy is still outselling “huge” franchises like TMNT, Transformers, GI Joe, etc. etc.

  7. I don’t understand why Valiant sells so poorly. Harbinger, Archer & Armstrong and Quantum & Woody are, month in and out, strong top-of-my-pile reads. Just really well-written, well-thought-out books with plenty of drama. The last two books are hilarious! Seeing Rachel Rising sell more than Harbinger – no offense to Rachel Rising – but Valiant’s meant to be the bigger company, I just don’t get it. Their reboot is the kind of reboot DC missed; and their line feels so fresh, so continuity-unheavy.

  8. I recently got caught up with Invincible. The book is terrible. Everything I love about the Walking Dead is exactly what I hate about Invincible.

  9. Still the most interesting column the Beat publishes and the one I always look for each month. Frankly, reading about Marvel and DC is like getting updates about boiled potatoes. Maybe some books are making money with crass rewiring plans but it’s clear the air has gone out of those tires. These yearly gimmicks to be turned into to trades may work when you add them all together on an excel spreadsheet but what a true waste of time for anybody creative who has higher hopes for their art. Making stories with no relevance dedicated to moneying up these characters more and building a bigger corporate empire.

While I like that this columnist has been a genial presence and a real fan of these books, I hope the next writer adds to that by peeling back a few more layers into what’s really going on in the indie scene and the mechanics of that business story. Why publishers like Image seem to believe that they will grow their audience into this huge wave of new readers simply by offering Marvel and DC established talents entrance into their gated community for their dream projects while mocking publishers with superhero tastes and celebrating their own snobbery. Seems like an open secret that Image has a sweet deal but it’s for the 1%-10% of comics. Good luck to everybody else who might be individual and different.

To add to this column, I never hear much about Dark Horse and IDW. I’m curious to see where they are going as companies. Dark Horse still seems like the lost cause that didn’t get the memo. For a name creator who has the option to choose between them and Image, it sounds like they have to split media rights with Dark Horse and work with an publisher that is more about the golden oldies and being 80’s/90’s pop culture license property warehouse. In a recent podcast, their was an editor there complaining about Dark Horse ‘s creator owned reputation being overlooked by all they do. Then later he was asked about being a big player in the MySpace digital era. And some of Dark Horses’ latest projects these days- publishing a sequel to Fight Club and promoting a books that tie in Prometheus, Alien & Predator.

Keep doing what your doing guys. We’ll wake you up when its over.

I wonder where IDW will go as it grows itself, in the Image or Dark Horse direction? From the outside, they don’t look like are as snobby and judgmental as Image. Are they looking to balance how to juggle their liscence properties and soak in the staleness that happened to Dark Horse with that model sucking out all mojo . If they get their deal as good as Image’s, will they go that direction more? All the people who get rejected from Image because they lack hipster cred, not important or lack Marvel/DC approval should have someplace to go. Will it be IDW or some digital comics community outside of the Comixology swindle sphere? Boom sounds like a sucky deal unless you’re looking for a home for a bad idea. Don’t know about the others, probably the same. All business stories suggestions for this column to get the wheels turning.

Hopefully there‘ll be something exciting next year that will light up the tired scene, something better on the horizon to get excited about comics again. Rather than more suburban-white-guy horror stories or drugged-out space noirs. It’ll likely be Rick Remender’s 6th Image book or Kirkman’s latest spook concept, The world of comics has to have more creativity than that. Maybe these publishers don’t care. Hopefully the best of them don’t join Marvel and DC in running the tank till its dry.
