Walking Dead rules the top of the charts again, in preparation for next month’s centennial issue, while new entries for Mars Attacks and Harbinger sandwich the ever improving Saga. Elsewhere, Spawn celebrates its 20th anniversary by almost tripling its regular sales and Brian Wood’s The Massive launches encouragingly high, while a bunch of successful recent launches consolidate their figures. Lots of books dropping, further down the charts though.

135 indie books charted this month, up on last month’s 128. The bottom book sold 3,302, down on last month’s 4,477. They sold approximately 1,344,491, down on last month’s 1,392,594. Average sales are 9,959 per book, also down on last month’s 10,880. As usual, UK and European sales from Diamond UK are not reported in this chart.

Out of the 135 books, only 29 went up in sales, far less than last month, and 87 went down, with the rest made up of one-shots and debuts.

Image are number one again this month of the indie publishers, with a 7.36% dollar share and a 6.45 market share, IDW with 6.22% dollar share and 4.16% market share, Dark Horse with a 4.51% dollar share and a 3.49% market share, Dynamite with a 2.82% dollar share and a 2.35% market share and Boom with 1.25% dollar share and 1.49% market share.

05/2012: The Walking Dead #98 - 49,974 (54,073)(+0.6%)
06/2012: The Walking Dead #99 - 55,710 (+3.0%)

Another high-point, although it’ll fade somewhat compared to the hundreds of thousands of copies the next issue has sold at this point. The sixteenth collection sells an amazing 28,284 copies, only a few copies less than the monthly sells normally and most of the other collections chart as well. As usual.

44. Mars Attacks (IDW)

06/2012: Mars Attacks #1 - 43,514

59 covers, one for each of the original trading cards plus one or two more, have helped propel this to very good sales, although I’m sure that won’t be repeated next month.

47, 267. Saga (Image)

03/2012: Saga #1 - 37,641 (51,766)
04/2012: Saga #2 - 36,885 (43,137)(-2.0%)
05/2012: Saga #3 - 38,895 (+5.4%)
06/2012: Saga #4 - 41,143 (+5.8%)

Another good increase, and also a third appearance for the first issue, selling a further 4,484 copies. I can’t help feeling that Brian Azarello’s Spaceman would have sold significantly better if it had been released in the same way as this and Fatale.

72. Harbinger (Valiant)

06/2012: Harbinger #1 - 32,111

Valiant’s second new book launches around 10,000 copies less than X-O Manowar, but still with very good figures.

81, 219. Spawn (Image)

06/2007: Spawn #168 - 24,152
06/2008: Spawn #179 - 19,759

03/2012: Spawn #217 - 12,686 (+0.1%)

05/2012: Spawn #219 - 12,804 (+1.0%)
06/2012: Spawn #220 - 30,136 (+135.4%)
06/2012: Spawn 20th Anniversary Coll Special #1 - 6,546

A massive boost for the 20th anniversary issue, with lots of variant covers. A special does about half the numbers of the regular series before this.

89. Buffy The Vampire Slayer (Dark Horse)

06/2007: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #4 - 102,430
06/2008: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #15 - 80,464
06/2009: -

09/2011: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #1 - 42,945 (+8.0%)
10/2011: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #2 - 36,448 (-15.1%)

04/2012: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #8 - 28,830 (-3.6%)
05/2012: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #9 - 28,229 (-2.1%)
06/2012: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #10 - 27,867 (-1.3%)

Slow and gentle drift downwards.

101. Massive (Dark Horse)

06/2012: Massive #1 - 22,173

A good start for Brian Wood’s environmental thriller, and I’m hearing positive things about sales in store. I wouldn’t be surprised if sales go up a little over the next couple of issues.

105. Fatale (Image)

01/2012: Fatale #1 - 41,000
02/2012: Fatale #2 - 20,315 (-1.0%)
03/2012: Fatale #3 - 20,222 (-0.5%)
04/2012: Fatale #4 - 22,804 (+12.8%)
05/2012: Fatale #5 - 22,484 (-1.4%)
06/2012: Fatale #6 - 21,828 (-2.9%)

Shedding a few readers at the start of a new arc, but I would guess that’s people jumping over to trade as much as people dropping the series. This is a book that seems to work a little better in one chunk, but then you miss out on the great back-matter. The first trade charts with sales of 5,026.

108. X-O Manowar (Valiant)

05/2012: X-O Manowar #1 - 42,708
06/2012: X-O Manowar #2 - 21,261 (-50.2%)

A hefty drop, but even so, if it can hold around this level it will have done very well.

110. Adventure Time (Boom)

02/2012: Adventure Time #1 - 12,392 (20,915)
03/2012: Adventure Time #2 - 11,329 (20,193) (-8.6%)
04/2012: Adventure Time #3 - 17,131 (+51.2%)
05/2012: Adventure Time #4 - 20,289 (+18.4%)
06/2012: Adventure Time #5 - 20,889 (+3.0%)

Another little increase for the fan-favourite kid’s comic. I’m still talking to people who have never heard of the series, so I think it might well keep on increasing in sales for a while yet, as it starts to permeate the national consciousness.

114. Kiss (IDW)

06/2012: Kiss #1 - 20,518

Launching at around the same level as the Archie crossover was selling. That said, Kiss comics seem to work better when they’re done with their tongue in cheek, as the Archie ones were. This series is played dead straight, and that hasn’t always fared so well in the past.

116. Thief of Thieves (Image)

02/2012: Thief of Thieves #1 - 17,877
03/2012: Thief of Thieves #2 - 14,286 (-20.1%)
04/2012: Thief of Thieves #3 - 13,644 (-4.5%)
05/2012: Thief of Thieves #4 - 17,774 (+30.3%)
06/2012: Thief of Thieves #5 - 19,833 (+11.6%)

Another more than decent increase, taking it above the first issue sales.

118. The Shadow (Dynamite)

04/2012: The Shadow #1 - 45,548
05/2012: The Shadow #2 - 21,982 (-51.7%)
06/2012: The Shadow #3 - 19,554 (-11.0%)

Starting to find its level, but Dynamite books can be notoriously unstable, and Garth Ennis is hopping off after the first arc.

119. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing (IDW)

08/2011: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #1 - 34,803 (39,180)
09/2011: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #2 - 19,333 (-44.4%)
10/2011: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #3 - 22,855 (+18.2%)
11/2011: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #4 - 22,898 (+0.2%)
12/2011: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #5 - 19,689 (-14.0%)
01/2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #6 - 18,773 (-4.7%)
02/2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #7 - 18,769 (0%)
03/2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #8 - 18,775 (0%)
04/2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #9 - 19,116 (28,554)(+1.8%)
04/2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Archie 100 Pg Spectacular - 4,163
05/2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #10 - 19,254 (+0.7%)
06/2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #11 - 19,416 (+0.1%)

Still holding very steady at a much higher level than I would have predicted, and another slight increase.

120, 281. Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation (IDW)

05/2012: Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation #1 - 20,940 (24,836)
06/2012: Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation #2 - 19,273 (-8.0%)

An extremely small drop for the second issue, while the first issue charts again with a further 3,896.sold. Both issues have had multiple printings.

121. Star Wars Dawn of The Jedi (Dark Horse)

02/2012: Dawn O/T Jedi Force Storm #0 - 17,260 (21,529)
02/2012: Dawn O/T Jedi Force Storm #1 - 18,797 (22,197)(+8.9%)
03/2012: Dawn O/T Jedi Force Storm #2 - 18,118 (-3.6%)
04/2012: Dawn O/T Jedi Force Storm #3 - 19,166 (+5.8%)
05/2012: Dawn O/T Jedi Force Storm #4 - 19,756 (+3.1%)
06/2012: Dawn O/T Jedi Force Storm #5 - 19,025 (-3.7%)

126. Star Wars Blood Ties Boba Fett Is Dead (Dark Horse)

04/2012: Blood Ties Boba Fett Is Dead #1 - 25,344
05/2012: Blood Ties Boba Fett Is Dead #2 - 18,544 (-26.8%)
06/2012: Blood Ties Boba Fett Is Dead #3 - 17,813 (-3.9%)

131. Star Wars Darth Vader Ghost Prison (Dark Horse)

05/2012: Star Wars Darth Vader Ghost Prison #1 - 22,026
06/2012: Star Wars Darth Vader Ghost Prison #2 - 16,858 (-23.5%)

143. Star Wars Knight Errant (Dark Horse)

08/2011: Star Wars Knight Errant Deluge #1 - 15,448
09/2011: Star Wars Knight Errant Deluge #2 - 12,767 (-17.3%)
10/2011: Star Wars Knight Errant Deluge #3 - 11,937 (-6.5%)
11/2011: Star Wars Knight Errant Deluge #4 - 11,407 (-4.4%)
12/2011: Star Wars Knight Errant Deluge #5 - 10,805 (-5.3%)
01-05/2012: -
06/2012: Star Wars Knight Errant Escape #1 - 15,449 (+43.0%)

Ghost Prison has an okay second issue drop, while Knight Errant returns at almost exactly the same level as the last series launched, one copy more.

124. The Manhattan Projects (Image)

03/2012: The Manhattan Projects #1 - 17,955 (23,168)
04/2012: The Manhattan Projects #2 - 15,697 (-12.6%)
05/2012: The Manhattan Projects #3 - 18,001 (+14.7%)
06/2012: The Manhattan Projects #4 - 18,544 (+3.0%)

Another small increase for Jonathan Hickman’s new book. Amazing, considering it’s about scientists, and is essentially as mad as a bag of hammers.

125. Extermination (Boom!)

06/2012: Extermination #1 - 18,130

Simon Spurrier’s launches with a dollar comic and decent sales, which will not hold over till the next issue. That said, it’s a fun little book, featuring a Batman archetype forced to team-up with his nemesis after the apocalypse.

130. Angel & Faith (Dark Horse)

06/2007: -
06/2008: After the Fall #8 - 47,888
06/2009: Angel #22 - 27,496
06/2010: Angel #34 - 17,467

12/2011: Angel & Faith #5 - 18,356 (-2.6%)
01/2012: Angel & Faith #6 - 17,800 (-3.0%)
02/2012: Angel & Faith #7 - 17,852 (+0.3%)
03/2012: Angel & Faith #8 - 17,690 (-0.9%)
04/2012: Angel & Faith #9 - 17,590 (-0.6%)
05/2012: Angel & Faith #10 - 17,206 (-2.2%)
06/2012: Angel & Faith #11 - 17,044 (-0.9%)

Holding fairly steady at the moment. The first collection charts at 15 with sales of 2,598.

132. The Boys (Dynamite)

06/2007: The Boys #8 - 30,639
06/2008: The Boys #19 - 27,576
06/2009: The Boys #31 - 25,460
06/2010: The Boys #43 - 21,390
06/2011: The Boys #55 - 18,330

11/2011: The Boys #60 - 17,323 (-1.2%)
12/2011: The Boys #61 - 17,024 (-1.7%)
01/2012: The Boys #62 - 16,700 (-1.9%)
02/2012: The Boys #63 - 16,629 (-0.4%)
03/2012: The Boys #64 - 16,479 (-0.9%)
04/2012: The Boys #65 - 16,371 (-0.7%)
05/2012: The Boys #66 - 16,514 (+0.9%)
06/2012: The Boys #67 - 16,567 (+0.3%)

Another 5 issues to go, as dreadful things happen to the rapidly shrinking cast.

139. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Micro-series (IDW)

12/2011: TMNT Micro Series #1 Raphael - 18,687
12/2011: TMNT Micro Series #2 Michelangelo - 15,930 (-14.8%)
01/2012: -
02/2012: TMNT Micro Series #3 Donatello - 15,617 (-0.2%)
03/2012: -
04/2012: TMNT Micro Series #4 Leonardo - 16,253 (+0.4%)
05/2012: -
06/2012: TMNT Micro Series #5 Splinter - 15,769 (-0.3%)

I’ve finally split the micro-series off into their own listing, as it becomes apparent there’s no end to them in sight.

140. Magic The Gathering (IDW)

02/2012: Magic The Gathering #1 - 28,858
02/2012: Magic The Gathering #2 - 23,849 (-17.4%)
03/2012: Magic The Gathering #3 - 20,078 (-15.8%)
04/2012: -
05/2012: Magic The Gathering #4 - 18,779 (-6.5%)
06/2012: MTG The Spell Thief #1 - 15,726 (-16.3%)

A big drop for the new series, possibly because the new series is $4.99 for a 32 page issue that comes with an exclusive MTG card, as opposed to $3.99 for the last series.

144. Conan (Dark Horse)

06/2007: Conan #41 - 24,720
06/2008: -

03/2012: Conan the Barbarian #2 - 17,288 (-15.9%)
04/2012: Conan the Barbarian #3 - 17,261 (-0.1%)
05/2012: Conan the Barbarian #4 - 15,689 (-9.1%)
06/2012: Conan the Barbarian #5 - 15,393 (-1.9%)

Fairly stable now on James Harren’s second issue, with Becky Cloonan returning in a couple of issues time.

145. Secret (Image)

04/2012: Secret #1 - 17,829
06/2012: Secret #2 - 14,905 (-16.4%)

A not-too-bad second issue drop and I suspect it may be in for a small rise next month.

148. Invincible (Image)

06/2007: Invincible #42 - 15,955
06/2008: Invincible #50 - 16,731

05/2012: Invincible #91 - 14,556 (+1.1%)
06/2012: Invincible #92 - 14,553 (0%)

Very, very solid, almost static this month.

152. Mind The Gap (Image)

05/2012: Mind The Gap #1 - 20,038
06/2012: Mind The Gap #2 - 14,218 (29.0%)

A slightly large drop, but this second issue suffered a printing problem that meant the book was recalled and reprinted. As a result there probably weren’t as many re-orders as there might have been.

156. Creator Owned Heroes (Image)

06/2012: Creator Owned Heroes #1 - 12,778

Steve Niles & the team of Palmiotti & Gray oversee a two-strip anthology with rotating stories. Okay launch figures for a book of this type.

160. Planetoid (Image)

06/2012: Planetoid #1 - 12,057

Ken Garing’s sci-fi book was originally a web-comic, and has been picked up by Image with fairly decent results for a book from an unknown creator.

163. Transformers Robots In Disguise (IDW)

01/2012: Transformers Robots In Disguise Ongoing #1 - 12,234
02/2012: Transformers Robots In Disguise Ongoing #2 - 11,655 (-4.7%)

167. Prophecy (Dynamite)

Dynamite pops a load of their licensed characters into one book and it does okay, with a second printing.

Relatively stable this month.

169. Hypernaturals (Boom!)

06/2012: Hypernaturals #1 - 10,854

Launching off the back of a FCBD issue 0, this hasn’t done as well as I’d think, considering it’s Abnett & Lanning doing pretty much what they were doing for Marvel’s cosmic books. That said, there has been a second print, so this may yet go up in sales.

173. Popeye (IDW)

04/2012: Popeye #1 - 12,250
05/2012: -
06/2012: Popeye #2 - 9,983 (-18.5%)

06/2012: Crossed Badlands #7 - 9,875 (+6.4%)
06/2012: Crossed Badlands #8 - 9,552 (-3.3%)

There’s no real reason why the sales should be going up and down like this, but it’s fairly stable overall. It’s a very difficult series to write, too easy to go for revolting over horrifying. Garth Ennis, and Simon Spurrier on the web-comic, Wish You Were Here, seem to be the only ones who have nailed it so far.

All figures on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month.

  1. 06/2012: Creator Owned Heroes #1 – 12,778

Best numbers I have ever had with an image book. May not mean anything to anyone, But happy as hell on my end.

Any title that is new material is hard as hell to launch in my eyes.

Thanks to all those here that support the series.

Wait (excluding the second issue, what happened there?) sales are going UP each month? That… that isn’t how it works! What is this, wacky backwards comic book land!? Ahhh! ;)

  3. @ Nathan Aaron Welcome to indie land, where rules are made to be broken! :)

Happy to see so many great titles selling more each month.

If you liked any of the DnA big two books then you owe it to yourself to read Hypernaturals. There’s a lot happening here; the book is a dense and satisfying read for someone looking for sci-fi superheroes.

Popeye is a joy to read. If you like Landridge’s work then by all means read this book. Well worth the $3.99.

Higher Earth took me by surprise. Alternate Earth Sci-Fi Action. Check out the previews at CBR.

Trio has some stellar John Byrne artwork. Pure eye-candy.

Godzilla is a different take on monster cinema; imagine the A-Team taking on Godzilla. A fun read by Duane Swierczynski.

  4. I’m kind of seeing this with new eyes and skimming the free pages on Comixology previews. I”ve always been curious, why lots of successful writers and artists from the big Two do much lower numbers in Image and the Indies since they have followings already, 90’s movement aside. Is it just the concept, access to promotion, number of issues or name recognition. The exception being the Zombie guy, I guess I’m one of the few that doesn’t get that.

I know this sounds superficial but I hate those lame costumes these skilled writers and artist use in their non DC/MArvel work. Like the Invincible one or what is it- Plutonian man in Irredeemable? Irreversable? Youngblood etc. They look something even Hawk & Dove would reject (Steve Ditko can mess up too). Cheesy clothes can’t be fixed by crackling story. My two cent, Cool costumes + good stories = numbers go up then Marvel/DC sweats a little and Indies roll without resorting to zombies & insect aliens . You guys got to step up when you go Indie. They dress better in big leagues.

  5. Raffaele – Thanks for those figures, that’s probably foreign sales I’d guess, and congrats on that! As you say, good figures for an indie book.

JohnRobie – Wow, I really don’t think I could disagree more! Firstly, while some creators who work for DC or Marvel do worse sales on indie books than for the big two, many do better in the indies. Ed Brubaker’s Fatale is selling almost twice the amount for Image than Incognito or Criminal sold for Marvel. Brian Vaughan’s Saga is selling much more than it likely would have sold through Vertigo.

However, it isn’t a surprise if a writer or artist sells more of a superhero book, because they are always going to have a chunk of the readership who will buy the comic regardless of who the writer is, because of the characters.

Lastly, a big part of why indie books tend to sell less is simply that there is a substantial portion of the retail community that don’t order them at all, sticking to the mainstream for either aesthetic or financial reasons.

On your second point, I can honestly say that is the first time I’ve heard that particular argument! I’ve seen literally thousands of awful costumes from the big two, and personally I have no issue with Invincible (which was deliberately designed to be a classic-looking book, so that it would clash with the more realistic tone). I think the content of comics is more important than the design of the costumes, personally.

  6. Good points Paul….You’ve brought me up to speed on good stuff and the industry. That Fatale looks pretty neat. And Saga looks like its a new take. (judging by my Comixolgy-skimming-preview cheapskate point of view)

Superhero/costume-wise, I understand these characters were supposed look semi-classic for that story effect but it seems to be a over-used device these days. Just wish costumes looked better superhero-wise even if done knowingly. They just look like we don’t have much imagination past 1975 on how to design these characters. SciFi, terminators, teeth monsters aside… Maybe commission someone from the Fashion Institute or costume designers to help out when they start these books. I don’t know if I can look at the 18th iteration of Captain Marvel man again…

  7. btw, forgive my odd musings. As a retired jewel thief based in Monaco , I wonder about the bigger trends in the comic industry now and then….but always impressed about how some artists and writers are pushing the medium and the hard work that goes into it, even as much as the time I was reading growing up. I just wish there could more break-out characters in the Independent arena on par with the big two to show how they ‘ve been asleep at the switch & taking too much advantage of our favorite hero fixes. This multiverse stuff is too much…

  8. This sounds nitpicky, I realize, but I’d like it better if the licensed IP comics were seperated from original works into their own seperate list. No offense to the folks who work on those books, but comparing and contrasting the sales of things that came directly out of a creator’s head and onto the page with stuff that’s tried-and-true with a built-in fanbase from other media doesn’t seem to be as valuable of an indicator of how ‘independent’ comics are doing. If these licenses went up for grabs, a lot of them would end up at Marvel or DC — or were already there at some point.

Other than that, calling Epic Kill a bit ‘generic’ seems a little harsh, and even with the drop it seems to be holding its own with less ‘generic’ material. Great book, really enjoying it.

Alabaster, to me, seems an indication that Dark Horse needs to play ball with comiXology instead of solely doing their own digital, at least for certain non-Star Wars / Hellboy / manga titles. That’s a book that probably would’ve benefitted from greater exposure to a non-traditional audience that might not mess with a seperate app.

  9. Mike – Yeah, I slightly winced looking back on that remark after Raffaele commented, but in my defence, it’s at least the second book in which a mysterious female assassin is trying to kill the President (Jimmy, I’m looking at Creator Owned Heroes too) this month from Image. And it’s a particularly well-used trope, I can think of at least three other comics off the top of my head. But, at the same time, it looks great, I think Raffaele is a fine artist, and it’s fun.

I understand your point about splitting off the licensed titles, but where would you stop? The likes of Crossed and Jennifer Blood were both created by Garth Ennis, but they’re written by other people now, so which side would they fall on? I think just the fact that they’re not Marvel or DC is significant enough.

  10. “I can’t help feeling that Brian Azarello’s Spaceman would have sold significantly better if it had been released in the same way as this and Fatale.”

How did Saga and Fatale go about their releases differently (besides not doing it through Vertigo)?

  11. I meant exactly that, not doing it through Vertigo. I really think if either Saga or Fatale had gone through Vertigo they wouldn’t have done as well.
