January wasn’t all bad news in the comics industry as Image had a strong month. Spawn #200 sold a crazy amount of issues thanks to its many variant copies, while The Walking Dead continued to rise and the new weekly reprints did fairly well. The biggest launches were a Darth Vader miniseries from Dark Horse, and IDW’s zombie crossover series Infestation.

Percentage wise Image had a huge month with 7.60% of the dollar market share and 6.45% of the unit market share. That’s the largest any non Marvel/DC company has been in the last couple of years. Of course it was due to an incredibly small month of books shipped in general, Spawn selling a boatload of copies for its anniversary issue, and Walking Dead Weekly upping the number of titles they ship in general.

Meanwhile Dark Horse had 4.82% dollar share and 3.70% unit share, and IDW had 4.75% dollar share and 4.60% unit share.

I’ve listed every “indie” book in the top 200, every Image, Dark Horse, and IDW book that made the charts, and a selection of others.

As always thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates, and can be found here.

Running almost one year late (originally solicited for February 2010) Spawn #200 has pretty incredible sales. Sales were boosted by ten different covers, including one by Jim Lee. Helpfully Image also shipped issue 201 in January, so we can see that almost none of the boost is sticking around for the new creative team. Still, I’m not sure if anyone expected Spawn to last this long when it launched in 1992.

Season eight of Buffy comes to an end. Sales have fallen a lot since the series launched back in 2007, but it’s still Dark Horse’s best selling comic by a large margin. I don’t believe there’s been an announcement of when season nine begins, but Dark Horse have advanced solicited a collection of Angel comics for July, so probably around then.

                               5 year (+52.7%)

Sales go up again, and for the first time ever The Walking Dead is a top 50 book. Meanwhile thousands of copies of the collections are still selling every month with volume one being the second most ordered book this month (though this was a smaller than usual month for collections too).

                               3 year (-32.4%)

No increase as the comic hits issue 50, but it wasn’t solicited as an anniversary issue and lacked the alternative covers most of those feature.

79. Star Wars: Darth Vader and the Lost Command (Dark Horse)
01/2011: Darth Vader & Lost Command #1 - 18,654

Five issue miniseries. This issue had two covers. The recent Star Wars launches have all been lower than the titles have sold historically, showing a decline in interest in the brand.

                               4 year (-47.9%)

As seen in this relaunch, which was apparently mandated by LucasFilm. I doubt Dark Horse is happy with that as sales are down by quite a bit since the last volume.

11/2010: Vampirella #1 - 29,215
12/2010: -

That’s a big second issue drop. Issue one had nine different covers, while this one had seven.

91. Infestation (IDW)

IDW’s cross-property zombie crossover starts well. It’ll be interesting to see how the other issues based on various well known properties do.

Didn’t bother doing the multiyear comparisons as the huge drop is presumably down to copies not shipping until February, as happened the last two Januaries.

01/2011: Transformers Prime #4 - 5,015 (-0.4%)

Four issue miniseries based on the new animated series that was originally solicited as a collection. Each issue has the same writer but a different artist, so I can only assume people don’t like the artists of issue two for some reason.

197. Green Hornet Blood Ties (Dynamite)
10/2010: Green Hornet Blood Ties #1 - 8,263
11/2010: Green Hornet Blood Ties #2 - 6,439 (-22.1%)

01/2011: Transformers Sector 7 #5 - 5,162 (-1.4%)

The huge drop last month doesn’t seem to have been an accident. I have no idea why it happened. This series is based on the movie continuity.

Sales go up a bit for the final part of Emperor Dragon, but they’re down versus two months ago. Still, Savage Dragon has shipped monthly for over a year now, that’s pretty impressive and some other people/companies could learn something from Erik Larson.

206, 229. 100 Penny Press Editions (IDW)
01/2011: Zombies vs Robots - 4,820
01/2011: Angel After the Fall #1 - 3,880

12/2010: Halcyon #2 - 4,365 (-50.9%)
01/2011: Halcyon #3 - 4,815 (+10.3%)

Five issue miniseries from Marc Guggenheim. Last month’s horrifying drop seems to have been the result of some issues shipping in a different month, so sales actually go up for this issue.

211. Let Me In (Darkhorse)
12/2010: Let Me In Crossroads #1 - 7,276
01/2011: Let Me In Crossroads #2 - 4,668 (-35.8%

Four issue miniseries that acts as a prequel to the American version of the film. Interestingly the writer of the novel which this film is based on didn’t want this comic to be made, but apparently was misinformed as to the nature of the contract he signed.

212. Who is Jake Ellis? (Image)
01/2011: Who is Jake Ellis? #1 - 4,647

New spy/crime series.

216. Fallen Angel (IDW)

01/2011: Return of the Son #1 - 4,390

The last issue of the previous miniseries (Reborn) shipped in October 2009 with sales of 5,130, so there doesn’t seem to be much interest in this new series.

12/2010: -
01/2011: Devils in the Desert #1 - 4,293 (-11.3%)

Four issue miniseries written and drawn by John Byrne, but there doesn’t seem to be much interest in this as a franchise. I’m wondering if a John Byrne miniseries about dinosaurs that wasn’t related Jurassic Park would sell better.

220. Memoir (Image)
01/2011: Memoir #1 - 4,189

Six issue miniseries by the writer of Choker.

261. Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers (Boom!)
12/2010: Chip N Dale #1 - 5,387
01/2011: Chip N Dale #2 - 4,143 (-23.1%)

12/2010: Skullkickers #4 - 4,614 (-7.9%)
01/2011: Skullkickers #5 - 4,009 (-13.1%)

Issue seven begins a new storyarc, so this should be around for a while longer.

226. Doc Macabre (IDW)
12/2010: Doc Macabre #1 - 5,694
01/2011: Doc Macabre #2 - 3,964 (-30.4%)

Three issue Steve Niles/Bernie Wrightson miniseries. Everything below this would not have made the charts last month.

231. Marineman (Image)
12/2010: Marineman #1 - 5,838
01/2011: Marineman #2 - 3,560 (-39.0%)

Video game adaptation. The percentage makes this drop seem worse than it is.

No new issue this month, but another 3,353 copies of Black Axe #1 show up, so now the numbers for that issue make more sense.

238. Twilight Guardian (Image)
01/2011: Twilight Guardian #1 - 3,330

Winner of Top Cow’s 2008 Pilot Season finally gets a miniseries. The previous issue sold 5,959 copies.

Volume one had first month sales of 1,468 copies this month. Sales on this seem fairly stable and seem to be dropping by around 100 copies a month.

244. 27 (Twenty Seven) (Image)
12/2010: 27 #1 - 4,239 [5,773]
01/2011: 27 #2 - 3,145 (-45.5%)

Four issue miniseries. Issue one showed up at 294 and sold another 1,534 copies. Those are reorders we wouldn’t normally see and help show how inaccurate some of the numbers on this chart can be.

255, 271. Fraggle Rock (Archaia)
04/2010: Fraggle Rock #1 - 6,571

01/2011: Volume 2 #1 - 2,721
01/2011: Volume 2 #2 - 2,227 (-18.2%)

The previous miniseries was solicited as four issues, but the final issue doesn’t seem to have come out. There was a hardcover collection so maybe it was included in there. Similarly, volume two was supposed to be a three issue miniseries, with all three issues coming out in January, but I don’t know if issue three actually came out.

Five issue miniseries sequel to the previous series which lasted 28 issues. The last issue that charted is, I think, issue 18 which sold 2,587 copies in March 2009.

==========

Just a reminder, all numbers on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month. These numbers don’t include sales through Diamond UK. They are frequently low.

  1. The Walking Dead monthly is “the little engine that could”, it continues to slowly increase in sales over time. I’m sure the tv show helped with that.

    Everything else though? Shudder…

  2. Star Legacy War is a 5 issue mini series not a full on relaunch.

As I understood it from interviews with the creators they had to lobby for the mini to close out the overall story. If anything the cancelation of the first volume was mandated by Lucasfilm and not the relauch, but I would be interested in understanding where you got your info from.

  3. Are all of these children’s comics, such as Fraggle Rock or Darkwing Duck available in places children actually frequent — i.e. not comic shops?

If so, those numbers could really be irrelevant.

  4. 253. GI Joe Origins (IDW)

This one’s being replaced, not relaunched; the new series will be a Snake Eyes ongoing.

  5. The Walking Dead’s achievements are incredible. Is this the highest the series has ever charted? And it’s in the middle of a long arc (well, okay, it’s solicited as starting a new arc, but it’s actually in the middle of a longer one taking place in this new community).

Although I enjoy the show, I can see its weaknesses, and the comic shares none of those weaknesses. I hope the comic never addresses them and stays its course, because I can see this series going for a very long time.

  6. @brandon
You could be right! It’s hard to keep track of all the different comics on this chart and I had assumed that the Star Wars books were switching to the “series of miniseries” format used by Hellboy, BPRD, and others.

I know _some_ of the Disney books Boom has been putting out have been available at newstands, but I don’t know if they all are. I do know that all Boom titles are available from Haven Distributors, but I don’t know what sort of orders then do. I don’t know about Fraggle Rock.

    @Shaun
    Thanks!

    @Michael Aronson
I believe this is the highest TWD has ever charted, but this was a weak month and the copies sold (which are the highest ever for first month sales!) are more important.

  7. I can’t believe there were so many orders for a Spawn anniversary issue when the very next issue just returns the book back to it’s previous level. So there’s an increase of 47,000 comics ordered because of anniversary numbers and variants? That’s hard to fathom. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen such an extreme case of this before. Usually the immediate next issue retains SOME of the bump.

And yeah Echoes #1 first appeared in the Top Cow first look book and then was reprinted as a $2.99 single comic. I know this because my shop threw in the book with the purchase of the comic. The second issue jumped the price up to $3.99 while the third issue returned things back to the previous price. Doesn’t seem like the promotion idea worked very well given the second issue only pulled in 2,000 orders.

  8. PeterCSM: Spawn #200 was kind of an unusual case, though…Todd McFarlane had been back writing and inking the book, but that issue was his first time pencilling a full issue (over Michael Golden layouts, no less!) since Spawn #50. Kind of a big deal for McFarlane fans.

Then long comes #201, and it has a new writer, new artist, and no involvement (other than editorial oversight) from Todd whatsoever. I’m surprised that the book didn’t drop below pre-#200 levels, honestly.

(Incidentally, I’ve been impressed by the post-#200 issues so far. Both of the creators, despite being inexperienced, are doing very solid work, and creating a comic that’s less like Spawn and more like the latter issues of Jae Lee’s Hellshock. I hadn’t read Spawn in years and came back for the McFarlane/Portacio arc, but the post-McFarlane stuff has impressed me enough that, at least for now, I’m sticking around.)
