Walking Dead continues to dominate, but Star Wars and Saga both go from strength to strength. Strong debuts for Shadow Year One, Legend of the Shadowclan and the new GI Joe book are interspersed with increased sales for My Little Pony, Adventure Time and Hellboy. Elsewhere is the usual clutch of Image debuts, while further down a few series return to the charts after a period away.

150 indie books charted this month, up on last month’s 131. The bottom book sold 4,110, down on last month’s 4,257. They sold approximately 1,625,267 in total, a good increase on last month’s 1,234,559. Average sales are 10,835 per book, well up on last month’s 9,424. UK and European sales from Diamond UK are not reported in this chart.

It was a decent month for risers. Out of the 150 books, 34 went up in sales and 97 went down, with the rest made up of one-shots and debuts.

Image are again the top indie publisher, with an 7.76% dollar share and a 7.89% market share, IDW have a 7.09% dollar share and 6.04% market share, Dark Horse have a 4.82% dollar share and a 4.16% market share, Dynamite have a 2.80% dollar share and 2.55% market share and Boom! have a 1.97% dollar share and 1.75% market share.

Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates, and can be found here.

Here’s this month’s top twenty indie graphic novels.

The new League of Extraordinary Gentlemen spin-off tops the chart, although I think it would have sold a lot better if it had had LOEG in the title, as I understand a lot of retailers missed it initially. The new Adventure Time trade does very well also, as does the second Star Trek/ Dr Who collection. The three usual Manga suspects, Sailor Moon, Bleach and Naruto all make an appearance, with three OGN’s, Ravine, from the ex-Witchblade team of Ron Marz & Stjepan Sejic, the penultimate part of Matt Wagner’s Tower Chronicles (which, slightly oddly, is being omnibused by Marvel), and the sequel to last year’s Assassins Creed series, originally published by DC, now inhouse from UbiSoft, and still produced by the fantastic team of Cameron Stewart and Karl Kerschl. Walking Dead only manages a mere quarter of the chart this month, but Saga looks like it may be joining it as a perennial.

12/2012-01/2013: -
02/2013: Scars #4 - 4,260 (???)

Wow, this series has had a terrible release schedule, surprisingly sales haven’t dropped too much, despite the two middle issues not charting.

295. Night of the Living Dead (Avatar)

10/2012: Aftermath #1 - 6,568
11/2012: Aftermath #2 - 4,867 (-25.9%)
12/2012: -

01/2013: -

12/2012: -
01/2013: Peter Panzerfaust #8 - ???? (???)
02/2013: Peter Panzerfaust #9 - 4,456 (???)

After vanishing from the charts for a few months, the rumours of a BBC TV series push sales back up. I suspect they’ll head back up more substantially in the next few months. If you’re looking at a possible investment, those three issues that didn’t chart must have pretty low print-runs…

291. Grimm Universe (Zenescope)

10/2012: Grimm Universe #1 - 5,220
12/2012: Grimm Universe #2 - ???? (???)
01/2013: -
02/2012: Grimm Universe #3 - 4,593 (???)

Not great, not awful by Zenescope standards.

Two issues to go, and the drops resume.

01/2013: Lord of the Jungle #12 - 5,016 (-2.4%)
02/2013: Lord of the Jungle #13 - 4,700 (-6.3%)

Still being solicited, but dropping through the floor sales-wise.

286. Mylo Xyloto (Bongo)

02/2013: Mylo Xyloto #1 - 4,723

I’m very surprised that this didn’t sell more. There must be more obsessive Coldplay fans than this out there, but then Bongo have probably sold this in other markets as well.

284. Blackacre (Image)

12/2012: Blackacre #1 - 9,804
12/2012: Blackacre #2 - 5,292 (-46.0%)

Showing no signs of slowing up yet.

280. Kill Shakespeare (IDW)

02/2013: Kill Shakespeare Tide of Blood #1 - 4,820

A sequel to the surprise hit, not so much of a hit this time around.

279. Guarding The Globe (Image)

06/2012: TMNT Color Classics #2 - 8,713 (-18.8%)

No that isn’t a mistake, they haven’t reprinted issue eight as it featured Cerebus, and Dave Sim had requested that it never be reprinted again.

07/2012: Prophecy #2 - 8,844 (-20.5%)

12/2012: -
01/2013: Prophecy #6 - 5,237 (-8.7%)
02/2013: Prophecy #7 - 5,035 (-3.9%)

Another final issue, Dynamite’s fantasy characters team-up didn’t fare as well as their pulp-character team up in Masks, but then they didn’t have Alex Ross to launch it.

272. Colder (Dark Horse)

11/2012: Colder #1 - 7,670
12/2012: Colder #2 - 5,683 (-25.9%)

06/2012: Mind MGMT #2 - 5,566 (-26.2%)

01/2013: Mind MGMT #7 - 4,766 (???)
02/2013: Mind MGMT #8 - 5,268 (+10.5%)

As with Peter Panzerfaust, rumours of a screen adaptation seem to be pushing sales back up.

266. Comeback (Image)

11/2012: Comeback #1 - 8,883
12/2012: Comeback #2 - 5,933 (-33.2%)
01/2013: Comeback #3 - 5,586 (-5.5%)
02/2013: Comeback #4 - 5,311 (-4.9%)

Seemingly dropping fast, but it’s only shedding a couple of hundred copies between issues, which isn’t too bad.

265. Fashion Beast (Avatar)

09/2012: Fashion Beast #1 - 12,831
10/2012: Fashion Beast #2 - 9,460 (-26.3%)

11/2012: -

01/2012: Fashion Beast #5 - 6,081 (-8.4%)
02/2012: Fashion Beast #6 - 5,328 (-12.4%)

This doesn’t appear it’s likely to level out anytime soon.

264. Jericho Season 4 (IDW)

08/2012: Jericho Season 4 #1 - 6,860
09/2012-01/2013: -
02/2013: Jericho Season 4 #2 - 5,331 (-22.3%)

Obviously a bit of a scheduling issue here, but despite that, not too bad a second-issue drop.

263, 270. Jennifer Blood (Dynamite)

02/2012: Jennifer Blood #9 - 9,906

====

03/2012: Jennifer Blood #10 - 9,421 (-4.9%)

02/2013: Jennifer Blood #22 - 5,331 (-2.3%)
02/2013: Jennifer Blood #23 - 5,126 (-3.8%)

Sort of stabilizing a bit here, but likely to drop below 5,000 copies in the next month or two.

262. Creepy Comics (Dark Horse)

====

03/2012: -
04/2012: Creepy Comics #8 - 5,507 (-0.6%)

11/2012-01/2013: -
02/2013: Creepy Comics #11 - 5,342 (-8.8%)

Another one of those random horror anthologies DH put out every now and then, sort of stable over the last year, really.

01/2013: Mega Man #21 - 6,220 (-2.1%)
02/2013: Mega Man #22 - 5,373 (-13.6%)

A big drop, but likely to increase again next month as it heads into a crossover with the Sonic titles.

260. Bionic Man vs Bionic Woman (Dynamite)

01/2013: Bionic Man Vs Bionic Woman #1 - 6,753
02/2013: Bionic Man Vs Bionic Woman #2 - 5,390 (-20.2%)

A decent second-issue drop, if not at a spectacular level.

Maybe leveling out, at an okay level for a Dynamite book.

215. Skullkickers (Image)

02/2013: Uncanny Skullkickers #1 - 7,271

In an attempt to boost sales a bit, Skullkickers is spoofing some of Marvel & DC’s recent relaunches with a new name every month. It seems to have worked.

Pretty stable, as it heads from being the best selling GI Joe book to the worst, at least temporarily.

01/2013: Adventure Time #12 - 20,407 (+85.9%)
02/2014: Adventure Time #13 - 22,474 (+10.1%)

Both books are just going from strength to strength, but the rest of the missing sales from issue eleven never showed up, lost to history it would appear.

On a solidly downward track.

02/2011: Sleeping & Dead #2 - 17,160

An excellent increase, obviously the year off has really increased the audience’s affection.

02/2013: Happy #4 - 26,641 (-7.4%)

A very respectable finish for this enormously fun book. I’d very much like to see more from Morrison in this vein.

64. Legend o/t Shadowclan (Aspen)

02/2013: Legend o/t Shadowclan #1 - 33,246

Aspen are launching a load of new books this year, and this is the first, starting with a dollar issue. This is nonetheless a good number.

62. My Little Pony Micro Series (IDW)

02/2013: Twilight Sparkle #1 - 34,435
45, 196. My Little Pony (IDW)

11/2012: - My Little Pony #1 - 80,128 (95,384)
12/2012: - My Little Pony #2 - 39,841 (-50.3%)

02/2013: - My Little Pony #3 - 43,579 (+9.4%)
02/2013: - MLP #1 & #2 Hot Topic Pack - 8,988

The Ponies’ domination continues, while a collection of the first two issues crops up two thirds of the way down the chart.

40, 117. Star Wars (Dark Horse)

01/2013: Star Wars #1 - 39,663 (57,104)
02/2013: Star Wars #2 - 46,063 (+16.1%)

Obviously some pretty hefty reordering took place this month, with a second printing of issue one selling a further 17,441 copies. I would imagine Dark Horse are delighted.

36, 233. Saga (Image)

03/2012: Saga #1 - 37,641 (51,766)
04/2012: Saga #2 - 36,885 (43,137)(-2.0%)

01/2013: Saga #9 - 45,629 (+7.8%)
02/2013: Saga #10 - 48,388 (+6.0%)

A new high point for the series, I can see it breaking the 50,000 copy mark by issue thirteen, if not before.

19, 34. The Walking Dead (Image)

12/2012: The Walking Dead #105 - 57,781 (+0.6%)
01/2013: The Walking Dead #106 - 70,526 (+22.1%)
02/2013: The Walking Dead #107 - 63,575 (-9.9%)
02/2013: The Walking Dead The Governor Special - 51,355

Not very much of a drop at all, making this the fourth best-selling issue yet, while the Governor Special comes in a little higher than the Michone one a few months back.

======

All figures on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month.

  1. Do you add in reprint numbers? I’d be curious to see how much the second print of DW: Prisoners of Time 1 added to the initial order. Still, either way, that’s a REMARKABLY small second issue drop. Ever since I dropped all of my DC titles in the wake of the new 52, I’ve had a bit of extra income to try other publishers. I’ve been buying some IDW books and enjoying them immensely. :)

  2. 182. Transformer Spotlight: Megatron
Besides being a popular character, the book was done by Nick Roche – a very popular artist/writer of TF books.

  3. Dark Horse’s Creepy anthology is quarterly. The most recent issue on this chart seems to have slipped from January to February, but otherwise it’s generally quarterly.

  4. Landridge and J Bone are doing the Rocketeer? Dammit, why wasn’t anyone talking about this? Not everyone reads Previews…it just seems this is one of those things we should come across if we read a few different comic blogs. And then we wonder why comic unit sales are diminishing and the industry is propped up by variant covers…. At least Adventure Time is finally cracking the top 100. I still don’t understand how everyone missed the boat on that one for so long.

  5. Sigh…

Kentucky FH – I only include reprint numbers if they feature in the top 300, I may look into whether we can use other figures from the rest of the chart, seeing as so many indie titles are reprinting at the moment. There are already twice as many titles in the Indie chart as the Marvel or DC charts, so it may just make it a bit unwieldy.

  6. High Ways is from IDW, not Boom.

It might be helpful to know what the current Kill Shakespeare’s numbers are being compared against to dub them “not so much of a hit.”

    >Dwindling. Movie coming.

…Although since the movie is nothing like this Lone Ranger comic, it has about as much potential for a crossover audience as any of the Sherlock Holmes comics have had with the recent movies.

    >Bedlam: Hopefully starting to level out.

Unlikely, with Rossmo about to leave the series.

  7. 143. Angel & Faith (Dark Horse)
“Pretty stable for the last year, really. The kind of book the phrase standard attrition was coined for.”

    94. Buffy TVS (Dark Horse)
    “On a solidly downward track.”

I’m not sure I understand these comments. Are the positive, negative or somewhere in between? “Pretty stable” suggests little to no movement in either direction while “standard attrition” implies downward trajectory at a regular albeit potentially slow pace. Or have I been misreading these charts? Likewise, “solidly downward” seems a bit of an oxymoron.

  8. Those STAR WARS numbers are very good. That has to speak well for Dark Horse at a time when Disney is looking at who will publish SW comics in the future. I hope they’re involved — either collaborating with Marvel (like Dynamite worked with Marvel on certain Alex Ross projects a few years back) or retaining the license outright.

  9. I appreciate the personal and subjective comments, but I’ve picked up a few of the books listed with glowing comments and found a few of them to be shit. Wouldn’t mind seeing another person working on these lists to add a word or sentence or two just to level out your commentary. Add some perspective and whatnot.

  10. Wait, CBR, the site that never met a superhero comic it couldn’t gush over, is on top of the work of J Bone? I…there’s no words….

  11. Paul Houston – it isn’t really a review column, while I’ll mention if I like something, it’s all just personal opinion. Out of interest, which books didn’t you like?

  12. Am I missing something? Why isn’t the Massive on the list?I believe there was an issue released in February

  13. “01/2013: TMNT Color Classics #7 – 5,944 (-7.9%)
    02/2013: TMNT Color Classics #9 – 4,984 (-7.9%)
No that isn’t a mistake, they haven’t reprinted issue eight as it featured Cerebus, and Dave Sim had requested that it never be reprinted again.”

Just made the value of my TMNT #8 (first printing) to go up. Yees!!!

  14. People, what’s up with Archer & Armstrong? It’s easily the most consistent (quality and artists) book Valiant currently has. I’ve been purchasing all their titles up until this point. And I’m just about to drop them all and keep Archer & Armstrong. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed! (Though I wonder if the “liberal” slant might turn some off? Eh, I’m a liberal, so I’m lovin’ it! :)

  15. No Savage Dragon listing this month? I wonder if bumping the price from $3.50 to $3.99 is an indication of dropping readers (and, it that case, when does it start to become too ineffective to keep publishing it?)

I still love the book — I’ve been with it from the beginning and still find it worthwhile… But to not see it in the top 300 at this long point…

  16. Were there really retailers who didn’t know NEMO was a LOEG book? Moore, O’Neill, Top Shelf, a character named Nemo, did they think it was about a clownfish?

That’s quite a dip for Byrne’s HIGH WAYS. I guess pretty soon his old “Faithful Fifty” will actually be down to 50, instead of 50,000. Not too surprising that his deal with IDW is that he doesn’t get paid for the serialized version, hard to imagine they’d be profitable otherwise.

The first KILL SHAKESPEARE series actually dropped off the Top 300 after #4, and that was at about 3,500 sales, so 4,800 for the new series isn’t bad. I suspect if it’s a “hit” it’s in the collected editions outside the direct market.

Did Dave Sim change his mind on reprints of TMNT #8? I thought his position was that Eastman and Laird didn’t need his permission to reprint any story they worked on together. Is it different now that the ownership is in the hands of a IP-devouring multinational conglomerate rather than an individual (Eastman and Laird don’t need permission, but IDW or Viacom do)?

  17. Darklord – no, there was an issue of Massive this month, issue #9 charted at 191, amidst the Transformers book, with sales of 9,936. I managed to miss it when I was transcribing the figures, sorry. I’ve not got the historical figures to hand, but I think that’s the first time it’s dropped below 10,000 copies.

Steve – there wasn’t an issue of SD this month, it’s running a little late at the moment, but one came out in early March so it should be in next month.

  18. BobH — my local shop ordered Nemo heavily and hardly sold any copies. ( I bought it, read it, andbwasn’t impressed.) I think the price point for it didn’t help with sales.

  19. Nathan Aaron — besides not wanting to take on another universe worth of books, I’m not a Van Lente fan for the reason you mentioned, though I haven’t even seen Archer & Armstrong.

Changing subjects, I have been reading Peter Panzerfaust from the beginning, but it’s not an investment for me. I could make some good money off of it, but I prefer to keep it. For a book retelling Peter Pan as a World War II book, it’s thoughtful, adult (not in the sense of any R-rated content), and very well done.

Bedlam may be seeing some drops soon, as Rossmo left over creative differences. Paul, you might have mentioned this last time. I think he has some loyal followers who will exit with him, though I’m pretty sure he’s not the type to encourage that.

  20. “Paul Houston – it isn’t really a review column, while I’ll mention if I like something, it’s all just personal opinion. Out of interest, which books didn’t you like?”

True, not a review column but does everything have to be so nuetral, sparse and indifferent. So Savage Dragon.(even when it comes back) The High Ways, Mara all dropped off the charts this month. Is there a reason why? Numbers don’t lie. Maybe trends your readers might be interested in …

Trends must certainly be happening in the Independent Comics world. This should really be a bit more exciting as a column, maybe not as rackus as DC but at least he has a take on what going on & some theories that are proving themselves out. Marvel and DC are using the same old tactics and fanboy targeting to stay afloat as far as it’ll take em. But Independents should be where the art is going, And they should be capitalizing on DC messing up big time.

What I don’t like about the Independent scene is that its just a place where established industry professionals can try things out , bad stuff like Mara and High Ways and not get called out on it. And then still have have more turns to bowl another one down the lane. Image is actively seeking Marvel & DC talent for built in readers as their 3rd projects but not really canvasing new creators from what I can see, Its all this safe fare with low expectations , Epic comic remakes. to me and pretty dull at that. So the Beat in other columns say they are cats pajamas but never comment much that the original crew are just not able to make good books. But if your the gatekeepers and have vanity projects , its all good.

All on a safe, dull gear now. Even the stuff on Comixology Submit looks familiar. Saga’s good but petering out if you ask me, Be nice to have something exciting for a change. Even opinions and giving the real deal will do,

  21. Just so I’m clear, both the Governor and Michone one-shots arn’t getting collected in any of the Walking Dead (6 issue) trades are they?? So I need to buy them seperately yeah?

  22. The High Ways might not have sold much, but it’s quite excellent IMHO. Quality doesn’t necessarily means sales, you know?

  23. James – well, most of the issues are reprints of Michone & Phillip’s first issues, nineteen and twenty seven respectively, with an extra eight page story. Those eight-pagers first appeared in an issue of Playboy, and this year’s CBLDF Annual, neither of which are too hard to find. I would imagine there will eventually be a collection of the bits and pieces which haven’t appeared in the trades so far.

  24. “Dropping very fast indeed, obviously not as many people wanting this as Lady Death, for some reason.”

I can think of a pair of reasons haha.

  25. @ Jason Green: thanks for the heads up on High Ways. I enjoyed Trio and decided to trade wait THW. I think the money situation is getting worse for a lot of fans and there is less experimenting with indie titles going on.@ Chris Hero @ 2.29: Don’t really expect to follow anything in comics without Previews do you? Especially the indie scene.
