Kind of a quiet month this month, with only two notable debuts, JMS’s new book Sidekicks, and this month’s Aspen debut, Overtaken, amongst the usual high flyers. In fact there are only 10 new books charting all month. The return of Saga is the only other big news, going from strength to strength.

It occurred to me this month that many of Image’s new books are getting some form of returnability. However, I’ve decided that, unlike my colleague MOF on the DC column, I’m not going to adjust the figures to reflect that, I’m going to stick to the raw data.

153 indie books charted this month, up on last month’s 141. The bottom book sold 4,327, down on last month’s 5,317. They sold approximately 1,581,067 in total, down on last month’s 1,699,572. Average sales are 10,333 per book, down on last month’s 12,053. UK and European sales from Diamond UK are not reported in this chart.

Out of the 153 books, 24 went up in sales and 116 went down, with the rest made up of one-shots and debuts.

Image continue as top dog of the indie publishers, with an 7.86% dollar share and a 8.51% market share, while IDW have a 5.70% dollar share and 4.98% market share, Dark Horse have a 5.47% dollar share and a 4.80% market share, Dynamite have a 3.01% dollar share and 2.93% market share and Boom! have a 2.05% dollar share and 2.07% market share.

Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates, and can be found here.

12. The Walking Dead (Image)

08/2008: The Walking Dead #51 - 23,121
08/2009: The Walking Dead #64 - 24,393
08/2010: The Walking Dead #76 - 26,553
08/2011: The Walking Dead #88 - 31,839
08/2012: The Walking Dead #101 - 51,732

====

09/2012: The Walking Dead #102 - 53,337 (+3.1%)
10/2012: The Walking Dead #103 - 74,378 (+39.4%)
10/2012: The Walking Dead Michone Special - 49,930 (60,633)
11/2012: The Walking Dead #104 - 57,456 (-22.8%)
12/2012: The Walking Dead #105 - 57,781 (+0.6%)
01/2013: The Walking Dead #106 - 70,526 (+22.1%)
02/2013: The Walking Dead #107 - 63,575 (-9.9%)
02/2013: The Walking Dead The Governor Special - 51,355
03/2013: The Walking Dead #108 - 67,423 (+6.1%)
04/2013: The Walking Dead #109 - 90,362 (+34.0%)
05/2013: The Walking Dead #110 - 76,455 (-15.4%)
06/2013: The Walking Dead #111 - 74,857 (-2.1%)
07/2013: The Walking Dead #112 - 72,975 (-2.5%)
08/2013: The Walking Dead #113 - 70,273 (-3.7%)

While this is a bit of a drop, this is the first issue in a while with no variants at all, and things are about to go mental sales-wise, with the upcoming All Out War, and its thirteen variants. It’s remarkably consistent on chart positions too; it’s been either 12 or 13 for the last four months.

22. Saga (Image)

08/2012: Saga #6 - 40,584

====

09-10/2012: -
11/2012: Saga #7 - 46,971 (53,267)(+15.7%)
12/2012: Saga #8 - 42,324 (48,965)(-9.9%)
01/2013: Saga #9 - 45,629 (+7.8%)
02/2013: Saga #10 - 48,388 (+6.0%)
03/2013: Saga #11 - 50,023 (+3.4%)
04/2013: Saga #12 - 53,339 (+6.6%)
05-07/2013: -
08/2013: Saga #13 - 55,372 (+3.8%)

Saga returns with its best first month sales to date, but I actually thought they’d be a bit higher. Maybe it has finally found a rough level. It did ship late in the month though, so won’t have picked up so many reorders.

44. Star Wars (Dark Horse)

01/2013: Star Wars #1 - 39,663 (63,410)
02/2013: Star Wars #2 - 46,063 (+16.1%)
03/2013: Star Wars #3 - 45,522 (-1.2%)
04/2013: Star Wars #4 - 45,019 (-1.1%)
05/2013: Star Wars #5 - 44,310 (-1.6%)
06/2013: Star Wars #6 - 42,806 (-3.4%)
07/2013: Star Wars #7 - 41,611 (-2.8%)
08/2013: Star Wars #8 - 38,792 (-6.8%)

The biggest drop to date, but still Dark Horse’s best seller by a large margin.

51. East of West (Image)

03/2013: East of West #1 - 49,518 (64,284)
04/2013: East of West #2 - 41,838 (-15.5%)
05/2013: -
06/2013: East of West #3 - 39,441 (-5.7%)
07/2013: East of West #4 - 43,228 (+9.6%)
08/2013: East of West #5 - 36,345 (-15.9%)

Another big seller taking a big drop, but this has a way to go before sales settle down I think.

69. Sidekick (Image)

08/2013: Sidekick #1 - 27,832

A decent start for Straczynski’s latest, in partnership with veteran Tom Mandrake. It’s good fun, if a little cliché in places.

71. Overtaken (Aspen)

08/2013: Overtaken #1 - 27,246

This month’s dollar book, coming in predictably at a far lower level than last month’s Fathom.

82, 300. Lazarus (Image)

05/2013: Lazarus #1 - 48,030
07/2013: Lazarus #2 - 27,143 (31,470) (-43.5%)
08/2013: Lazarus #3 - 24,961 (-8.0%)

Sales starting to level out, while issue two picks up a further 4,327 on its second printing.

84, 240, 253. My Little Pony (IDW)

11/2012: My Little Pony #1 - 80,128 (95,384)
12/2012: My Little Pony #2 - 39,841 (-50.3%)
01/2013: -
02/2013: My Little Pony #3 - 43,579 (+9.4%)
02/2013: MLP #1 & #2 Hot Topic Pack - 8,988
03/2013: My Little Pony #4 - 41,541 (-4.7%)
03/2013: My Little Pony #5 - 36,354 (-12.5%)
04/2013: My Little Pony #6 - 33,903 (-6.7%)
05/2013: My Little Pony #7 - 32,188 (-5.1%)
06/2013: My Little Pony #8 - 33,114 (+2.9%)
06/2013: My Little Pony Color Me Treasury Ed - 4,810
07/2013: My Little Pony #9 - 35,153 (41,444) (+6.2%)
08/2013: My Little Pony #10 - 24,475 (-30.4%)
08/2013: My Little Pony Cover Gallery #1 - 6,859

3 books chart this month, although the main book takes a huge fall. This is slightly made up by issue nine making a reappearance with 6,291 copies sold, and a cover gallery does okay.

100. My Little Pony Micro Series (IDW)

02/2013: Twilight Sparkle #1 - 34,435
03/2013: Rainbow Dash #1 - 25,473 (-26.0%)
04/2013: Rarity #1 - 23,338 (-8.4%)
05/2013: Fluttershy #1 - 22,489 (-3.6%)
06/2013: Pinkie Pie #1 - 25,219 (+12.1%)
07/2013: Applejack #1 - 24,350 (-3.5%)
08/2013: Cutie Mark Crusaders #1 - 20,868 (-14.3%)

A big drop for this issue spotlighting the MLP’s supergroup.

101. Satellite Sam (Image)

07/2013: Satellite Sam #1 - 32,452
08/2013: Satellite Sam #2 - 20,752 (-36.1%)

A slightly high drop, but still good figures for a black and white book (that isn’t Walking Dead).

103. Buffy TVS (Dark Horse)

08/2008: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #17 - 79,307
08/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #27 - 53,403
08/2012: Buffy TVS Season 9 #12 - 26,569

====

09/2012: Buffy TVS Season 9 #13 - 25,864 (-2.7%)
10/2012: Buffy TVS Season 9 #14 - 25,577 (-1.1%)
11/2012: Buffy TVS Season 9 #15 - 24,506 (-4.2%)
12/2012: Buffy TVS Season 9 #16 - 23,896 (-2.5%)
01/2013: Buffy TVS Season 9 #17 - 23,219 (-2.8%)
02/2013: Buffy TVS Season 9 #18 - 22,530 (-3.0%)
03/2013: Buffy TVS Season 9 #19 - 22,424 (-0.5%)
04/2013: Buffy TVS Season 9 #20 - 21,901 (-2.3%)
05/2013: Buffy TVS Season 9 #21 - 21,701 (-0.9%)
06/2013: Buffy TVS Season 9 #22 - 21,194 (-2.3%)
07/2013: Buffy TVS Season 9 #23 - 20,768 (-2.0%)
08/2013: Buffy TVS Season 9 #24 - 20,584 (-0.9%)

Penultimate issue before the end of the Season, and things are pretty solid.

107, 231. Adventure Time (Boom!)

08/2012: Adventure Time #7 - 19,423

====

09/2012: Adventure Time #8 - 19,755 (+1.7%)
10/2012: Adventure Time #9 - 20,636 (+4.5%)
11/2012: Adventure Time #10 - 23,656 (+14.6%)
12/2012: Adventure Time Cover Showcase - 7,478
01/2013: Adventure Time #11 - 10,980 (-53.6%)
01/2013: Adventure Time #12 - 20,407 (+85.9%)
02/2013: Adventure Time #13 - 22,474 (+10.1%)
03/2013: Adventure Time #14 - 22,165 (-1.4%)
04/2013: Adventure Time #15 - 21,682 (-2.2%)
05/2013: Adventure Time #16 - 21,659 (-0.1%)
05/2013: Adventure Time Annual #1 - 20,975
06/2013: Adventure Time #17 - 20,860 (-3.7%)
07/2013: Adventure Time #18 - 21,071 (+1.0%)
07/2013: Adventure Time Summer Special 2013 - 19,182 (26,278)
08/2013: Adventure Time #19 - 19,852 (-5.8%)

The main book drops down a bit, but the Summer Special adds another 7,096 copies sold.

112. True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys (Dark Horse)

06/2013: True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #1 - 42,613
07/2013: True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #2 - 22,401 (-47.4%)
08/2013: True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #3 - 19,091 (-14.8%)

Sales starting to settle, but some downwards adjustment still to come.

113. Ten Grand (Image)

05/2013: Ten Grand #1 - 57,216
06/2013: Ten Grand #2 - 29,241 (-48.9%)
07/2013: Ten Grand #3 - 21,858 (-25.5%)
08/2013: Ten Grand #4 - 19,017 (-13.0%)

Another one that has yet to find its level. The sacking of Ben Templesmith probably won’t help much.

116, 283. Red Sonja (Dynamite)

08/2008: Red Sonja #36 - 14,834
08/2009: Red Sonja #47 - 11,709
08/2010: -
08/2011: Red Sonja #57 - 7,888
08/2012: Red Sonja #68 - 6,428

====

09/2012: -
10/2012: Red Sonja #69 - 6,176 (-3.9%)
10/2012: Red Sonja #70 - 6,103 (-1.2%)
11/2012: Red Sonja #71 - 6,048 (-0.9%)
12/2012: Red Sonja #72 - 5,856 (-3.2%)
01/2013: -
02/2013: Red Sonja #73 - 5,546 (-5.3%)
03/2013: -
04/2013: Red Sonja #74 - 5,449 (-1.7%)
05/2013: Red Sonja #75 - 7,072 (+29.8%)
05/2013: Red Sonja #76 - 5,272 (-25.5%)
06/2013: Red Sonja #77 - 5,212 (-1.1%)
06/2013: Red Sonja #78 - ????
07/2013: Red Sonja #1 - 30,561 (+486.4%)
07/2013: Red Sonja #79 - ????
08/2013: Red Sonja #2 - 18,327 (-40.0%)
08/2013: Red Sonja #80 - 5,066 (???)

The second issue of the relaunch has a big drop, but it still leaves it way above where it was. This is amply demonstrated by the last issue of the previous series, which only just makes the 300.

117. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (IDW)

08/2011: TMNT #1 - 34,803 (39,180)
08/2012: TMNT #13 - 18,342

====

09/2012: TMNT #14 - 17,682 (-3.6%)
10/2012: TMNT #15 - 17,591 (-3.6%)
10/2012: TMNT Annual 2012 - 16,274
11/2012: TMNT #16 - 17,140 (-2.6%)
12/2012: TMNT #17 - 16,703 (-2.5%)
01/2013: -
02/2013: TMNT #18 - 16,172 (-3.2%)
02/2013: TMNT #19 - 16,125 (-0.3%)
03/2013: TMNT #20 - 16,084 (-0.3%)
04/2013: TMNT #21 - 20,659 (+28.4%)
05/2013: TMNT #22 - 27,759 (+34.4%)
06/2013: TMNT #23 - 17,772 (-36.0%)
07/2013: TMNT #24 - 16,484 (-7.2%)
08/2013: TMNT #25 - 17,833 (+8.0%)

A good little bump, presumably down to the anniversary issue.

118. X-Files Season 10 (IDW)

06/2013: X-Files Season 10 #1 - 24,270
07/2013: X-Files Season 10 #2 - 16,729 (-31.1%)
08/2013: X-Files Season 10 #3 - 17,557 (+4.9%)

This is proving to be a popular relaunch, all three issues are still reprinting, the first issue up to its fourth printing now, I believe.

119. The Manhattan Projects (Image)

08/2012: -

====

09/2012: The Manhattan Projects #6 - 17,981 (-2.3%)
11/2012: The Manhattan Projects #7 - 17,543 (-2.4%)
12/2012: The Manhattan Projects #8 - 17,028 (-2.9%)
01/2012: -
02/2013: The Manhattan Projects #9 - 17,229 (+1.2%)
03/2013: The Manhattan Projects #10 - 17,028 (-1.2%)
04/2013: The Manhattan Projects #11 - 17,517 (+2.9%)
05/2013: -
06/2013: The Manhattan Projects #12 - 17,076 (-2.5%)
07/2013: -
08/2013: The Manhattan Projects #13 - 17,556 (+2.8%)

Another increase, this book really has been very stable over this last year.

122. Adventure Time Candy Capers (Boom!)

07/2013: Adventure Time Candy Capers #1 - 21,587
08/2013: Adventure Time Candy Capers #2 - 17,050 (-21.0%)

Sales are lower than the main book, but not by much. Most Adventure Time fans will buy all of these books, and on the whole, they’ve been very high quality. Kudos for mainly hiring indie cartoonists too!

123. Fatale (Image)

08/2012: Fatale #7 - 21,369

====

09/2012: -
10/2012: Fatale #8 - 20,542 (-3.9%)
10/2012: Fatale #9 - 19,345 (-5.8%)
11/2012: Fatale #10 - 18,819 (-2.7%)
12/2012: Fatale #11 - 18,055 (-4.1%)
01/2013: -
02/2013: Fatale #12 - 17,999 (-0.3%)
03/2013: Fatale #13 - 17,662 (-1.9%)
04/2013: Fatale #14 - 17,557 (-0.6%)
05/2013: -
06/2013: Fatale #15 - 22,373 (+28.5%)
07/2013: -
08/2013: Fatale #16 - 17,045 (-24.6%)

Sales drop back down after last month’s new arc jump, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they go back up again a bit next month.

128. Regular Show (Boom!)

05/2013: Regular Show #1 - 38,466
06/2013: Regular Show #2 - 19,507 (-49.3%)
08/2013: Regular Show #3 - 16,000 (-18.0%)

Obviously not as popular as Adventure Time, but still doing well, as the drops slow down.

129. Spawn (Image)

08/2008: Spawn #181 - 19,112
08/2011: Spawn #210 - 14,100
08/2012: Spawn #222 - 18,336

====

09/2012: Spawn #223 - 21,965 (+19.8%)
10/2012: Spawn #224 - 17,759 (-19.1%)

02/2013: Spawn #228 - 16,343 (-4.8%)
03/2013: Spawn #229 - 16,355 (+0.1%)
04/2013: Spawn #230 - 15,994 (-2.2%)
05/2013: Spawn #231 - 16,502 (+3.2%)
06/2013: Spawn #232 - 16,077 (-2.7%)
07/2013: Spawn #233 - 15,701 (-2.3%)
08/2013: Spawn #234 - 15,930 (+0.8%)

Sales holding pretty steady at the moment.

131. Itty Bitty Hellboy (Dark Horse)

08/2013: Itty Bitty Hellboy #1 - 15,545

After several cult kid’s books at DC, Art Baltazar & Franco bring their unique style to Hellboy, with pretty decent sales, round about two-thirds of the main book.

132. Star Wars Legacy (Dark Horse)

03/2013: Star Wars Legacy II #1 - 21,600
04/2013: Star Wars Legacy II #2 - 16,384 (-24.1%)
05/2013: Star Wars Legacy II #3 - 16,497 (+0.7%)
06/2013: Star Wars Legacy II #4 - 16,147 (-2.1%)
07/2013: Star Wars Legacy II #5 - 15,854 (-1.8%)
08/2013: Star Wars Legacy II #6 - 15,394 (-2.9%)

This seems to have found its level pretty quickly, settling into a gentle drift downwards.

139. Sex (Image)

03/2013: Sex #1 - 23,630 (29,298)
04/2013: Sex #2 - 21,342 (-9.7%)
05/2013: Sex #3 - 20,509 (-3.9%)
06/2013: Sex #4 - 17,938 (-12.5%)
07/2013: Sex #5 - 15,996 (-10.8%)
08/2013: Sex #6 - 14,488 (-9.4%)

This is still falling very quickly though. It is an odd book, quite talky and less action-oriented than Casey’s usual books.

140. Star Wars Darth Vader (Dark Horse)

08/2012: Ghost Prison #4 - 15,850

====

09/2012: Ghost Prison #5 - 15,455 (-2.5%)
12/2012: Purge Tyrants Fist #1 - 15,546 (+5.9%)
12/2012: Purge Tyrants Fist #2 - 13,429 (-13.6%)
01-03/2013: -
04/2013: Ninth Assassin #1 - 17,278 (+28.7%)
05/2013: Ninth Assassin #2 - 15,322 (-11.3%)
06/2013: Ninth Assassin #3 - 14,806 (-3.4%)
07/2013: Ninth Assassin #4 - 14,650 (-1.1%)
08/2013: Ninth Assassin #5 - 14,258 (-2.7%)

The final part of this mini-series, the Dark Lord now takes a break till a new series in December.

141. Chin Music (Image)

05/2013: Chin Music #1 - 22,383
06-07/2013: -
08/2013: Chin Music #2 - 14,112 (-37.0%)

Running late, Tony Harris obviously didn’t have much in the bag when this book got launched.

144. Angel & Faith (Dark Horse)

08/2012: Angel & Faith #13 - 16,453

====

09/2012: Angel & Faith #14 - 16,139 (-1.9%)
10/2012: Angel & Faith #15 - 15,774 (-2.3%)
11/2012: Angel & Faith #16 - 15,446 (-2.1%)
12/2012: Angel & Faith #17 - 15,026 (-2.7%)
01/2013: Angel & Faith #18 - 14,609 (-2.8%)
02/2013: Angel & Faith #19 - 14,412 (-1.3%)
03/2013: Angel & Faith #20 - 14,245 (-1.2%)
04/2013: Angel & Faith #21 - 14,102 (-1.0%)
05/2013: Angel & Faith #22 - 13,895 (-1.5%)
06/2013: Angel & Faith #23 - 13,668 (-1.6%)
07/2013: Angel & Faith #24 - 13,368 (-2.2%)
08/2013: Angel & Faith #25 - 13,335 (-0.2%)

The end of Season 9 and a bit of a break before returning later this year, I believe.

145. Doctor Who Prisoners of Time (IDW)

01/2013: Doctor Who Prisoners Of Time #1 - 12,752
02/2013: Doctor Who Prisoners Of Time #2 - 12,730 (-0.2%)
03/2013: Doctor Who Prisoners Of Time #3 - 12,717 (-0.1%)
04/2013: Doctor Who Prisoners Of Time #4 - 14,653 (+15.2%)
05/2013: Doctor Who Prisoners Of Time #5 - 13,097 (-10.6%)
06/2013: Doctor Who Prisoners Of Time #6 - 13,018 (-0.6%)
07/2013: Doctor Who Prisoners Of Time #7 - 12,773 (-1.9%)
08/2013: Doctor Who Prisoners Of Time #8 - 13,328 (+4.2%)

Another decent increase, amazing this far into the series. Then again, despite being a single storyline, each issue spotlights a different Doctor in order; number 8, Paul McGann this time. Apparently he’s the second most popular so far.

146. Thief of Thieves (Image)

08/2012: Thief of Thieves #7 - 18,266

====

09/2012: Thief of Thieves #8 - 17,070 (-6.5%)

11/2012: Thief of Thieves #10 - 16,424 (-1.3%)

03/2013: -
04/2013: Thief of Thieves #13 - 15,201 (+1.5%)
05/2013: Thief of Thieves #14 - 16,938 (+11.4%)
06/2013: -
07/2013: Thief of Thieves #15 - 14,013 (-17.3%)
08/2013: Thief of Thieves #16 - 13,182 (-5.9%)

Less of a drop this month, but it looks like sales will be volatile for a while yet.

147. Quantum & Woody (Valiant)

07/2013: Quantum & Woody #1 - 17,622
08/2013: Quantum & Woody #2 - 12,818 (-27.3%)

A reasonable second-issue drop, Valiant’s best selling book this month.

150. Halo Initiation (Dark Horse)

08/2013: Halo Initiation #1 - 12,584

Dark Horse takes over the Halo license from Marvel. Probably a good fit.

151. Star Wars Dark Times (Dark Horse)

02/2013: Fire Carrier #1 - 14,308 (+10.1%)
03/2013: Fire Carrier #2 - 13,077 (-8.6%)
04/2013: Fire Carrier #3 - 12,435 (-4.9%)
05/2013: Fire Carrier #4 - 12,138 (-2.4%)
06/2013: Fire Carrier #5 - 12,145 (+0.1%)
07/2013: Spark Remains #1 - 13,990 (+15.2%)
08/2013: Spark Remains #2 - 12,559 (-10.2%)

Very much in the range of the last series, not a bad drop at all.

152. Revival (Image)

08/2012: Revival #2 - 10,486

====

09/2012: Revival #3 - 13,943 (+33.0%)

11/2012: Revival #5 - 14,098 (-7.6%)
01/2013: Revival #6 - 17,396 (+23.4%)
02/2013: Revival #7 - 16,639 (-4.4%)
03/2013: Revival #8 - 17,082 (+2.7%)
04/2013: Revival #9 - 16,977 (-0.6%)
05/2013: Revival #10 - 16,314 (-3.9%)
06/2013: Revival #11 - 13,536 (-17.0%)
07/2013: Revival #12 - 13,948 (+3.0%)
08/2013: Revival #13 - 12,549 (-10.0%)

Another big drop. It’s lost a quarter of its sales in the last four issues.

153. Secret (Image)

04/2012: Secret #1 - 17,829
06/2012: Secret #2 - 14,905 (-16.4%)
08/2013: Secret #3 - 12,130 (-18.6%)

14 months between #2 & 3, it’s safe to say this series is encountering problems. I’m surprised the drop isn’t bigger to be honest.

154. Conan (Dark Horse)

08/2008: The Cimmerian #2 - 25,762
08/2009: The Cimmerian #13 - 18,881
08/2010: -
08/2011: The Road of Kings #7 - 11,955

07/2013: Conan the Barbarian #18 - 12,331 (-0.5%)
08/2013: Conan the Barbarian #19 - 12,105 (-1.8%)

Standard attrition.

155. Harbinger (Valiant)

08/2012: Harbinger #3 - 15,482 (-10.2%)
09/2012: Harbinger #4 - 15,298 (-1.2%)
10/2012: Harbinger #5 - 14,603 (-4.5%)

06/2013: Harbinger #13 - 12,930 (+2.8%)
07/2013: Harbinger #14 - 10,709 (-17.2%)
08/2013: Harbinger #15 - 12,086 (+12.9%)

Things improve after last month’s mystifying drop.

157. Lords of Mars (Dynamite)

08/2013: Lords Of Mars #1 - 11,595

They’re not allowed to use the name Tarzan due to copyright reasons, but this book brings Lord Greystoke and John Carter together. It’s sold better than either character’s own book, so not too bad I guess.

159. Burn The Orphanage (Image)

08/2013: Burn The Orphanage #1 - 11,524

A fun little tribute to the martial arts films and game of the eighties. It’s ably illustrated by Sina Grace, author of the excellent Not My Bag, which is one of the best books about working in retail that you will ever read.

161. Bloodshot (Valiant)

08/2012: Bloodshot #2 - 16,024

====

09/2012: Bloodshot #3 - 14,517 (-9.4%)

05/2013: Bloodshot #11 - 11,146 (-16.7%)
06/2013: Bloodshot #12 - 12,145 (+9.0%)
07/2013: Bloodshot #12 - 10,058 (-17.2%)
08/2013: Bloodshot #0 - 11,303 (+12.4%)

Another Valiant improvement, but that might be down to the zero issue. The original Bloodshot #0 in the nineties was a chromium comic if I recall.

163. Grimm Fairy Tales Oz (Zenescope)

07/2013: GFT Oz #1 - 19,237
08/2013: GFT Oz #2 - 11,119 (-42.2%)

A biggish drop, but still very decent by Zenescope standards.

166. X-O Manowar (Valiant)

08/2012: X-O Manowar #4 - 16,882

====

09/2012: X-O Manowar #5 - 23,800 (+41.0%)

03/2013: X-O Manowar #11 - 15,765 (+16.7%)

06/2013: X-O Manowar #14 - 13,227 (-0.6%)
07/2013: X-O Manowar #15 - 13,997 (+5.5%)
08/2013: X-O Manowar #15 - 11,019 (-21.3%)

X-O seems to take the big drop that most other Valiant books saw last month.

169. Star Trek Ongoing (IDW)

08/2012: Star Trek Ongoing #12 - 10,635

====

09/2012: Star Trek Ongoing #13 - 10,396 (-2.2%)

07/2013: Star Trek Ongoing #23 - 11,022 (+2.1%)
08/2013: Star Trek Ongoing #24 - 10,886 (-1.2%)

Pretty stable at the moment, post film.

170. Thunder Agents (IDW)

08/2013: Thunder Agents #1 - 10,737

A new publisher for the classic series, sales coming in around the same as the last DC series ended.

171. Ghosted (Image)

07/2013: Ghosted #1 - 17,782
08/2013: Ghosted #2 - 10,414 (-41.4%)

A big-ish drop, but I suspect that first issue number may have been boosted by speculation.

173. TMNT Micro Series (IDW)

====

09/2012: TMNT Micro Series #8 Fugitoid - 13,356 (-7.0%)

07/2013: Villain Micro Series #4 - 11,031 (+0.1%)
08/2013: Villain Micro Series #5 - 10,343 (-6.0%)

It’s the assassin Karai this month, but not as popular as last month’s star, Alopex.

174. TMNT New Animated Adventures (IDW)

07/2013: TMNT New Animated Adventures #1 - 14,397
08/2013: TMNT New Animated Adventures #2 - 10,304 (-28.4%)

Not a bad drop and perfectly decent numbers for this sort of book.

175. Doctor Who Ongoing (IDW)

09/2012: Doctor Who Annual 2012 - 6,722 (-3.6%)
10/2012: Doctor Who Vol. 3 #1 - 18,083 (+169.0%)

08/2013: Doctor Who Vol. 3 #12 - 10,220 (-10.5%)

Peaking and troughing, but usually ending up around the same number.

178. Archer & Armstrong (Valiant)

08/2012: Archer & Armstrong #1 - 23,464

====

09/2012: Archer & Armstrong #2 - 14,539 (-38.0%)
10/2012: Archer & Armstrong #3 - 14,715 (+1.2%)

07/2013: Archer & Armstrong #11 - 9,880 (-25.4%)
08/2013: Archer & Armstrong #12 - 9,971 (+0.9%)

A mild uptick, but it looks like last month’s drop is here to stay.

179. Robocop (Boom!)

08/2013: Robocop Last Stand #1 - 9,959

A new series following the original movies, with the remake just about to hit the cinemas.

Another of the dropping Valiant titles that appears to be staying where it is.

183. Sheltered (Image)

07/2013: Sheltered #1 - 21,055
08/2013: Sheltered #2 - 9,836 (-53.3%)

That’s a massive drop, but then that first issue seemed to sell surprisingly high.

05/2013: Abe Sapien Dark & Terrible #2 - 10,445 (-11.4%)

08/2013: Abe Sapien #5 - 9,676 (-6.2%)

Not a great drop, there’s a month or two gap ‘til the next arc now.

08/2013: The Shadow #16 - 9,484 (-3.7%)

Still dropping, but I’d guess there’s a fair bit more rope, looking at other Dynamite titles.

07/2013: -
08/2013: Extinction Parade #2 - 9,392 (-41.5%)

06/2013: The Bounce #2 - 16,125 (-34.0%)

A pretty hefty drop, but this is a bit of an unknown quantity for retailers, so they’re probably being a bit conservative.

And after all the Season Two hype…sales are below where they were. I think this may yet go back up though.

214. GFT No Tomorrow (Zenescope)

08/2013:GFT No Tomorrow #1 - 7,880

Quite a big drop this month, it won’t be long before it’s back to where it was before the relaunch at this rate.

A bit of a drop, but pretty solid overall.

229. Buck Rogers (Hermes Press)

08/2013: Buck Rogers in the 25th Century #1 - 7,220

Howard Chaykin relaunches the classic pulp character in typical blood and thunder Chaykin style. I think this may be Hermes’ first original comic, they’re best known for reprints of classic comic strips.

08/2013: Mark Waid's Green Hornet #5 - 6,843 (-13.8%)

This really doesn’t seem to have worked sales-wise. It’s still a couple of thousand above the old series, but at this rate it may not be for long.

Sort of starting to stabilize. Some way to go yet.

248. GFT Realm Knights (Zenescope)

08/2013: GFT Realm Knights #1 - 6,550

I’m a little surprised this hasn’t sold a bit better, as it’s teaming up the likes of Robyn Hood & Red Riding Hood in a team book. Terrible name though.

This really isn’t doing too well. To be honest, it’s not that great, not particularly different from umpteen other violent masked vigilante books.

07/2013: George RR Martin Skin Trade #1 - 8,996
08/2013: George RR Martin Skin Trade #2 - 6,078 (-32.4%)

Not settling down.

261. Vampirella Southern Gothic (Dynamite)

08/2013: Southern Gothic #1 - 5,836

Random Vampi mini-series, as Dynamite are wont to do, although it does come in above the main series.

266. GFT Zombies Cursed (Zenescope)

07/2013: GFT Zombies Cursed #1 - ????
08/2013: GFT Zombies Cursed #2 - 5,580 (???)

The first issue didn’t even chart, maybe people don’t want to see sexy zombies?

08/2013: Prophet #38 - 5,366 (+0.5%)

Just really very solid over the last six months. Long may it continue, this issue, an artist-jam Diehard spotlight, was far more beautiful than such a thing has any right to be.

All figures on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month.

  1. You’ve got:
    07/2013: GI Joe Special Missions #5 – 8,004 (-1.1%)
    08/2013: GI Joe Special Missions #5 – 7,493 (-6.4%)
    The second should be #6.

  2. Surprised to see East of West dropping like that. I feel like it’s really hit its stride in the last 3 issues.

Also, as always, shocked to see Prophet so low. So damn good.

  3. A lot of good books selling low. I guess this is the result of DC and Marvel’s crossovers sucking up all the $$$; people cut the indies to have money for the events. But man, some of these titles (Catalyst Comix and Waid’s Green Hornet) are surprisingly low given how good they really are.

  4. Revival is crazy good. It’s frightening and disturbing and leaves you wanting to read more. It’s right up there with Manhattan Projects, Fatale, Chew, and Saga.

  5. “A lot of good books selling low. I guess this is the result of DC and Marvel’s crossovers sucking up all the $$$; people cut the indies to have money for the events.”

I don’t believe that at all. These books tend to have sales like this no matter what Marvel and DC are doing. It’s just the nature of the industry, for better or worse.

  6. I`m starting to stress out as Valiant took a nosedive the past 2 months. The books are excellent in quality (writing & ART)….at this rate 12 months from now it will be over. Im a big Marvel and DC fan getting more and more into indie…..but like most books of the Big 2, nothing seems to last like it used to in the old days……its either a hit or a decent start with and end in sight between issues# 12-30 ish…..how depressing.

  7. What in the blue Hell is going on with Mind MGMT? It’s easily the best serial comic in decades and nobody is reading it. I don’t get it.

  8. “07/2013: X-O Manowar #15 – 13,997 (+5.5%)
    08/2013: X-O Manowar #15 – 11,019 (-21.3%)
X-O seems to take the big drop that most other Valiant books saw last month.”

Looks like readers have finally noticed that each issue takes 5 minutes to read and barely anything happens, to the tune of $4 a pop….?

  9. I’m cutting the last of my DC books and most of my remaining Marvel books because of all the crossovers.

  10. I jumped back onboard with all the Valiant titles after dropping some Marvels and pretty much all of DC. They produce some great comics but it’s hard to like many of the characters.

  11. I buy nearly every 3 dollar Image comic and never buy 4 dollar Valiants.

    I think I get my money’s worth….and I enjoy their stories a great deal.

  12. Everyones got a favorite as shown by posts above, but I’m personally not a fan of any of them (Revival, East of West, Mind Mgmt) and their low sales are not surprising. Not everyone likes the same stuff. I adore the Great Pacific, Regular Show, Prophet and Six Gun Gorilla, but not suprised that only 5000 other people feel the same. That’s how it is out on the fringe of this medium.

  13. I think it says more about the state of our medium that the kind of books that DC and Marvel put out are the center of its universe. I think there are a lot of good indie books out there like Great Pacific, Black Acre, Prophet etc. that are being ignored because people have gotten used to the sub-quality material of the mainstream books being the norm to expect. Why branch out when it all feels the same?

  14. The Valiant books haven’t grabbed me as being much more than generic superhero riffs (whether that’s right or wrong I don’t know) and the $4 price tag is an instant turn off from just randomly buying an issue. Mind MGMT to me is like a documentary: it’s well-crafted and good but I don’t really enjoy or look forward to it (if that makes sense). But I was hoping it would start to take off sales-wise because it is so lovingly crafted and unique. My DC intake is about nil but some of the new Vertigo stuff is looking interesting. I still buy five or six Marvel books a month. But Infinity and Battle of the Atom aren’t appealing to me.

  15. I tend to trade wait most indie comics because the stories are generally longer and more complex, and reading an issue a month I easily lose track of the plot. Whereas Marvel and DC tend to be simple and repetitive enough that I never need to look back and remind myself what happened in the last issue.

Personally I think comics like Morning Glories or Fatale would benefit from having a couple of pages of recaps at the beginning of each issue (of course not replacing the new story pages, but in addition).

  16. I feel bad for Wasteland. I love that the creators keep on going, even though it probably earns them no money
