Buffy regains the top spot this month, though with the lowest numbers for the series since Season eight began. Meanwhile the top launches this month were a one dollar issue of Dungeons and Dragons from IDW, a The Boys spinoff from Dynamite, Magnus Robot Fighter from Dark Horse, and Invincible spinoff Guarding the Globe.

Image grabbed the top “indie” publisher spot this month with 5.42% of the dollar share (the highest for any indie publisher since 2008, reflecting a slow month for Marvel and DC rather than anything else) and 4.24% of the unit share, Dark Horse had 4.63% of the dollar share and 4.23% of the unit share, while IDW had 4.38% of the dollar share and 3.77% of the unit share.

Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates, and can be found here.

I’m not listing the Phantom books from earlier this year as they don’t make the chart every month, and when they do show up there are sometimes more than one series listed so I’m not sure which to use as a comparison. Needless to say, this is a big increase, but despite having a still popular series in Australia I’m really not sure how much interest there is in America.

Issue 5 was the 99cent issue, so we don’t have numbers for it.

140. Baltimore (Dark Horse)
08/2010: Baltimore Plague Ships #1 - 12,099

This is a comic book sequel to a novel written by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden. Not set in the Hellboy universe as far as I can tell.

Sales go up, presumably due to advance reorders.

                                4 year (n.a.)
				5 year (-48.6%)

Sales on this title have dropped quite a bit in the last year. The one shot was always going to sell less though.

Looks like a good sign for this sequel miniseries.

                               1 year (-43.7%)

Well the drops have finally gotten smaller, but that one year comparison is pretty brutal. Issue 12 will be the final issue.

157. Star Wars: Blood Ties (Dark Horse)

08/2010: A Tale of Jango and Boba Fett #1 - 9,769

Shipped the last week of the month, so it’s possible it shipped late to some stores who didn’t get it until September. If not this must be the lowest a Star Wars title has sold in ages.

158. Locke & Key (IDW)

08/2009: -

A big bounce for a new issue one. I believe this to be the first part of Act Two.

08/2010: GI Joe Cobra II #7 - 9,387 (-3.5%)
                6 month (-15.6%)

These drops are going to need to get smaller if this is going to stick around long term.

161, 163, 175, 184, 186, 215. 1 for $1 (Dark Horse)

08/2010: Hellboy: Seed of Destruction - 9,291

08/2010: Aliens vs. Predator - 7,485
08/2010: Usagi Yojimbo - 6,194

I’m a little surprised the Sin City issue sold so well, the rest are about what you’d expect based upon sales of other $1 issues.

07/2010: -

Best selling Green Hornet title of the month, though mostly just because lots of them didn’t ship.

Sold out, a second printing was available in September.

                5 year (-5.3%)

Two issues this month. I’m guessing some shops got issue 215 in July, which is why the number there is fairly low.

206. Darkness: Four Horsemen (Image)
08/2010: Four Horsemen #1 - 6,447

It seems kind of weird to put out miniseries when your main title doesn’t ship every month.

207. Science Dog (Image)

Cars may sell butt loads of merchandise, but that doesn’t seem to transfer over to direct market sales. This is sold on newsstands, so maybe it does better there.

I’m a little surprised these have dropped off so much compared to the Gemstone issues.

I’m amused that the numbers for a series featuring a main character named after a question are filled with question marks. This is a reprint series so the economics are different than for other titles.

297. Conan: The Frazetta Cover Series (Dark Horse)

These costs $6.99, and are listed as “Conan Legacy Frazetta Cover” on the ICV2 list. The series exists to reprint Frazetta’s Conan covers over various Conan comics. There will be eight in total.

Final print issue. The creators apparently believe it will do better online, and I can’t blame them.
==========

Just a reminder, all numbers on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to the direct market. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month. These numbers don’t include sales through Diamond UK. They are low.

Matthew Murray reads a lot of zines and comics, but he always wants more.

  1. “These numbers don’t include sales through Diamond UK. They are low.”

    I don’t think 10 – 20 % on top of us sales is “low”…

    its quite a sizeable chunk

  2. Low in this case means I’ve heard from some people that their comics sell better than the numbers here even when only considering North American sales.
But I’ve also heard that if these numbers are the same as the combined UK/NA sales.
    So I don’t know.
I also think I should have set this up to post next week. Oops!
And yeah, “indie” means non DC/Marvel. Sometimes it’s in brackets meaning it’s not really that indie at all…

  3. Re: sales of Crossed, it looks like there are 10,000 sickos out there. Solid numbers for the mini tho!

Re: B.P.R.D. we need to wait for #2 orders to see how well it’s selling. There’s always a bump for the first issue, but the 13k in sales is flat for the last 6 months.

Re: G.I.Joe Cobra, just a plug for an awesome book. Thanks for the number-crunchin’.

  4. On Avatar’s increased sales per title: My guess is that because they not only have multiple covers, they also continue to put out reprints of early issues with new covers that they end up picking up new readers as the a series continues. So you can have a book like WOLFSKIN of CROSSED: FAMILY VALUES that has convention issues, and torture covers, etc… and they come out 3-4-5 months after #1 hit the stands. If that’s someone’s first taste then they end up jumping on with issue #’s 3-4 or so. Make sense?

  5. Avatar’s increased sales – y’know, I think this may just be that retailers consistently underorder on these books. I still speak to a lot of people who, despite their current roster of books, cannot forgive Avatar for the books they put out when they started.
But the punters really don’t seem to care, and those books are reordered for months after they’re released…

  6. I think it’s very possible with Hellboy and BPRD that instead of diminishing returns we might be seeing more of a migration to the tpbs.

  7. It’s sad that Echo, and The Sixth Gun aren’t selling better, as they are both excellent comics.

I would guess that Echo will sell well as tpb’s (especially as there will probably only be 6 required to collect the entire series).

I realise that they are two very different genres, but they are just so readable.

  8. ” I still speak to a lot of people who, despite their current roster of books, cannot forgive Avatar for the books they put out when they started.

What type of books did they put out?

  9. Snikt Snakt,

Avatar first put out fairly lame “Bad girl” books when they began, although that was quite some time ago, and I can’t see a grudge being held that long when there’s dollars to be made.
